61 unforced errors from Andrey

He started brightly but really seemed to unravel in that second set onward.

Novak was visibly shaking the rust off as the match went on.

My only concern for him is that he's had such a short off-season he may not be mentally in the mood to get right back into it and up for a Grand Slam already.

Watched the whole match. Golubev was playing well in the first, hitting Nole off court. Nole was serving poorly, hitting many DFs and basic errors. Golubev broke for 5-3, but choked serving for the set. Djoker gifted the next game to lose the set. The last two sets were routine. Golubev couldn't maintain his intensity and the winners he made in the first set, turned into UE's in second and third. Djoker started serving better and was just more solid from the baseline.

Golubev fell apart after the first set, but took that one deservedly...

Djoker seemed so strong last season! What happened for him to be rusty now? Hmm.. well, at least he won.

You can't expect a grand slam performance in a clown event like Hopman Cup. Djoker looked relaxed throughout the match, unlike his partner who fist pumped on every fucking UE :o

Rusty performance by Nole but it doesn't indicate anything of his current form. Starts are tricky.
I remember last year he was demolished by Tomic in an exho previous to AO, but then he performed to his level in the slam until he had that stomach flu. :tape:

First match back will always be a tricky prospect, especially against a player of Golubev's calibre (at times). Not much danger of losing really and a nice workout at the end for Nole.

Yeah, he was quite relaxed and having a bit of fun during the matches. He mentioned after the singles win that he is stepping up the physical preparation this week so he may not be able to perform to his absolute best in the upcoming matches.

Another quality match to start off another unremarkable season for Fakervic :yeah: Expect 99% of the matches he plays to follow this exact formula, in which he mugs out an ugly win against an even bigger mug and remains the most undeserving and mediocre top 5 player.

Not a good or really interesting match, but good on Nole for winning. He seemed relaxed and was finding himself on the court after the time off, got better over time. As soon as Nole started raising his level, the match was totally over.

It's not like grand slam-worthy performances are common in Fakervic's career.

Really late in the day to be stepping up the physical imo...maybe they are working on the running track with an iron lung or something to extend the sessions out in the heat...dunno...wierd prep...

each victory for Ana is huge having in mind where she is coming back from, so you shouldn't be to hard on her apart from some other context ;)

Nole was really rusty in the 1st set, he hit 7 double faults!!!, well deserved for Golubev to win that 1st set, he was the better player by far.

As the match went on, Golubev just could not maintain the rhythm he had, and Nole started getting a little bit better, no double faults, and hit a nice ace or two, only Nole's first match back, i don't expect him to wipe his opponents off the court.

By the way, since noone else has brought it up yet, heard Lleyton commentate for the first set of this match, he is a really good commentator, I am impressed with his knowledge and insights into pretty much every player, hope to hear him commentate matches when he hangs up the racquet.

Looking forward to Nole vs. Lleyton. :)

This is the reason Djokovic has kept his no.3 spot. Player's like Golubev.

watched the entire match on tv (finally....)

here's the long and short. djokovic gave golubev chances in the first two games and it was evident, for the rest of the set, he was trying to recover but didn't manage to do so, golubev was just too good.

in the 2nd set, golubev was worn out all ready, he's quite unfit if you have a good look at him... hahaha

in the 3rd set djokovic demolished him with long rallies etc. which golubev should not have engaged in. but it was too late then.
