Apologies if there's a similar thread (I've looked but can't see one)

It's a New Year, the time when we dust off our crystal balls and make totally incorrect predictions about the new season based either on our head or heart. So I thought I'd combine the two and make WANT/THINK thread for the 2011 Tennis season.

WARNING: Things will get pessimistic.

What I want: Rafa to get a calendar slam
What I think: Rafa will lose at AO and/or USO

What I want: Djokovic to win a slam, if Rafa isn't in the final.
What I think Djokovic surprise us all by actually winning a slam! Unfortunately, World ends.

What I want: Ernest Gulbis to reach Top 15 status
What I think: Ernest Gulbis reaches QF of AO/FO and is never heard of again until 2012.

What I want: Someone under 21 to reach QF or better in a slam.
What I think: Someone under 21 will slay Top 10 player in first round (Roddick), be hyped up as the new Federer and fall promptly to qualifer in 2nd round.

What I want: Murray gets beaten by another British player.
What I think: Other male British players fail to get through to main draw.

What I want: Federer retires
What I think: Federer gets to at least QFs of all four slams even with a broken back and the impending birth of triplets. Anna Wintour watches on stoically.

What I want: to have a threesome with Ana Ivanovic and Maria Sharapova
What I think: the above will not happen

How about 2008 quality? Federer played better in 2008 than he did in 2009. And Rafa in 2008 played about level with his 2010 level. That's the best of both worlds.

2009 was like 2008 but no mono-Fed, Del Potro instead of Fakervic, Soderling instead of clay court mugs, and 3 quality GS finals instead of 1. I will agree though that 2010 was the low point of tennis for quite a long time, while 2008 was one of the better years.

Classy.

It's a compliment  What I meant is that even if Fed was in a wheelchair he'd probably still make it to a slam semis. I wish he'd retire though, I think his slam winning days are over and what else has he got to achieve? Go out on a high I say. Plus, he sucks at losing.

Federer played like crap at Roland Garros and Wimbledon in 2009. He almost didn't beat Del Potro and Haas at Roland Garros, and ALMOST didn't beat Roddick at Wimbledon where he played a poor level of tennis off the ground. That level isn't good enough to even stretch a healthy Rafa. It's been all downhill since 2008 when he really was close to the Rafa level at least at Wimbledon 2008.

What I Want: Fed to win AO and FO
What'll Happen: May AO, will lose in the FO.

What I want: Murray to lift the Wimbledon trophy. Come on, let's get the sense of poetic justice goin'.
What'll Happen: Fed or Nadal.

What I Want: Del Potro to make a strong return.
What'll Happen: Top 10 return at best.

What I Want: Rafa to win AO, FO, W, win 12 grand slams by end of 2011
What I Think: 3 out of 4, USO would be terrific too. :)

What I Want: Nole or Murray to win USO in 2011
What I Think: Like the chances of Nole winning so long as Rafa isn't on the other side of the net, Murray may suffer yet another early exit.

What I Want: Del Potro to stay healthy in 2011 and return to top 10
What I Think: Might suffer a relapse of the wrist injury, but should return to top 15 by end of 2011

What I Want: Hewitt to make one last deep run at a grand slam (AO or Wimbledon)
What I Think: His best days are well behind me, but I respect his never say die attitude, if a nice draw opens up for him, who knows? But I don't think it will happen, expecting a bunch of 3rd round exits

What I Want: Murray to go out in the first round of Wimby

What I Think: Murray will make it into the final, UK press will go into overdrive, member of royal family (probably Prince William and new wife) will attend the match. Entire country will watch with bated breath as Andy Murray, our Andy Murray, our BRITISH Andrew Murray....loses in straights to Fed/Nadal/Nole/Roddick/Berdych. After a few hours of disappointment, life continues as normal and UK public return their attention to whether Fabregas will stay at Arsenal.
