TV coverage only showed the last few games but the Belgian didn't make it easy for Lleyton in his first match back... glad he won.

Good game from Bemelmans, though sometimes he showed lack of experience at this level.
Hewitt was so so

Hewitt was awful. No way is he getting back to top 10 with this level of tennis.

His first match is obviously not the best measure to judge how far he can go, but I agree top 10 is out of reach for the soon to be 30-year-old. Top 25 is a good goal for him, but it's more about getting some good results at this stage of his career than chasing ranking points.

He maybe awful but he is far above any other player from Australia.
The only other australian Big guy is Sam Stosur.

At least he was moving better than for long time.

I'm not going to take anything from this match since it is the first match of the season from both players, but the quality of play wasn't good, so we'll see how Lleyton progresses with more matches under his belt.

My first chance to have a look at Bemelmans so I was quite interested - he seems a solid enough player, forehand is a big weapon but quite erratic, good serve, aggressive mindset, needs to work on his defensive skills a bit - but at pressure moments he really didn't play sensible, composed tennis and needs to work on that - the game he played at 4-5 in the first to dump serve and set was awful. He has the game to be ranked much higher than the 170s but I'm wondering whether the mentality will allow him to climb very high.

Considering he hasn't played since September, and considering that he was playing with an injury during the US hardcourt swing and DC (where Bemelmans took a set off of him), I'm happy with a so so performance. Being guarenteed 6 matches between Perth and Kooyong will hopefully allow him to get some rhythm.

His serve remains a huge problem. Very low % and weak as shit. Henin hit several return winners off his serve in mixed doubles match, ffs. Trust me, he won't be getting close to top 20 with that serve and declining movement, not to mention no true weapon. He is a hard worker who deserves respect, but at his age, when he comes up against a top 10 player, his limitations will soon become apparent.

i am just glad to see him out there trying to compete and make something happen.

gotta admire his courage. he lacks the power for the modern game.

Good that he is playing again. He needs rhytm and matches, and will probably be at his wanted level around Indian Wells.

He played well in the mixed doubles. Return was on and the volleys textbook.
