Should tennis tournaments embrace a double elimination system?

Why?

Obviously Federer and Nadal are the best players today, but even the best have their off days. This would give the fans a higher chance of seeing the desired Fedal final they paid for. Federer has been disappointing with QF exits at slams this year, and as he grows older that's not gonna get better. This would make things far more interesting for the average tennis fan. And if you reach the final through the loser bracket, you simply start being one set down.

What do you think ??

Yes, they need RR for Slams. In fact Fedal should just play the final and the all the other stooges shouldn't be allowed on the same tour as them.

I think BYEs for Federer and Nadal are OK in exhos (and maybe their home tournaments, Basel / Barcelona?) but it would be quite radical to give them a BYE in slams...

Not at all, just let them play Best of 7 on all continents. Give the people what they want.

You're bored? Don't you know there's tennis played in Abu Dhabi as we speak?

No. The challenge of tournament is not losing focus throughout all of your matches. If Federer or Nadal can't do that, then they don't deserve to advance in that particular tournament, simple as that.

:topic: I am watching it, though I hardly ever watch exos, but it does not make me raise from my seat.

Come on there is the epitome of the tennis season just behind Newport, Casachallenger and Houston. The Abu Dhabi show

Abu Dhabi was the 5th slam last year. Nadal's famous 'win' over Soderling was the most hyped-up unofficial match result of the year by far.

Tennis doesn't need such changes. :)

The golden age of tennis was when the champion only had to defend in the final. It's all been mugs and clowns since then :o

RR already ended in disaster in 2007. We don't need a second round.

What about Nadull and Frauderer get a BYE to the final? That would eliminate all the hassle between the first day and the final. The other players can compete to be 3rd and 4th.

What do RR or Bye systems have to do with double elimination? Some of you people just like to whine at every god damn thing without giving it a seconds thought. Do you even know what double elimination means?

It would be great, the only downside is that the tournament would have 50% more matches and 1 more match for the players. That, and it might make the bracket too difficult to follow for the average drooler.

As a mechanic to separate the best, its great. If you like best-of-5 over best-of-3, you should like double elim. It only serves to make sure the best guy lifts the trophy more often than not. Less fluke results.

nothing at all to do with round-robin.

Erm, thanks but no thanks. I also fail to see the correlation. In best of five, you still need to win matches in order to progress. You need to win, you're not allowed a completely off day or a pass for a bad matchup, just as it should be.

Federer and Nadal should have bye to the final, other players reaching semis are automatically disqualified.

Yes, thank you...

I assumed people knew what I was talking about, but apparently it got lost somewhere.

Yes, you make good points. My vote was a misclick
