from the davis cup newsletter

The American Davis Cup squad’s elder statesman, Todd Martin, perhaps said it best. The 32 year old from Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, almost a decade older than the rest of the American squad, said in a press conference on Monday, “I feel very excited about being at Roland Garros, my favourite place in the world to play tennis. To represent my country here is a dream never had but it’s come true.”

Martin’s sentiments were echoed by his captain, Patrick McEnroe, and teammates, Andy Roddick and James Blake after the team completed its third practice yesterday on the famed terre battue of Roland Garros.

“They have the best claycourts in the world here,” said Roddick. “It’s a pleasure to play here.” “As soon as we defeated Spain, the team was asking if they would get the opportunity to play France here at Roland Garros,” said McEnroe. “It’s thrilling to be a player here, to see how much respect the players have for this place,” said Blake.

McEnroe said that his team was getting used to the clay but that the team was feeling “very good.” He refused to be drawn when asked who would win the tie, saying, “Every match is a winnable match. There is no clear favourite. Getting off to a good start is important.”

McEnroe, who praised the talents of his opponents, was also very complimentary about his players. “Todd had some time off and is in good shape after some practice in Florida. Mardy Fish is getting better all the time. Same with James and Andy. They are improving all the time. We are very hopeful for the future.”

“The French team is versatile and so is our team,” continued McEnroe. “Each team will think they have a chance to win.”

Asked individually about the absence of the American top two, each member of the team said that they would not comment but noted that they themselves were proud to be there. “The great thing is that every person on this team wants to be here,” said Roddick. “This is a priority for everybody on our team.”

“It’s the most important thing in a tennis player’s career,” said Blake. “Something I can believe in. You get a high playing for your country and I love being part of a team.”

“It’s a no brainer,” added Blake. “Four weeks out of my year I want to be out there playing. I always dreamed of playing Davis Cup for my country, especially with a great captain like Patrick.”

Seb played pretty good, not at his best but good enough to beat Andy
Seb lost his concentration at start of 2nd after winning 1st
but after that he was never in trouble once he got his focus right.

there was a little bit of doubt when he had his ankle strapped but it wasn't too uncomfortable.

Congrats to the French!

And the growing pains continue for Roddick. He better learn how to return serve and set up points otherwise he'll just be another good player. And with his serve and forehand, he has a head start to his career. But this year has been a dissapointment to me. Especially in the big matches.

Now I didn't expect Roddick to be favored on clay againt Clement or Grosjean in Paris. And I was right.

From www.eurosport.com

France will play either Russia, leading the other semi-final 2-1, or Argentina in the November 29-December 1 final at home.

It is the first time since the 1930s, when the 'French Musketeers' dominated the Davis Cup, that France have reached the final in successive years and Grosjean's win was greeted with champagne sprays, tears and emotional speeches.

In a battle of the teams' number ones, Grosjean again revealed Roddick's lack of claycourt know-how. The American 20-year-old played clever tennis for two sets but then reverted to pure power and Grosjean picked his opponent's game apart.

Grosjean, ranked nine in the world, received lengthy treatment midway through the second set after going over on his right ankle when chasing a forehand along the baseline. He had his foot strapped and wore a support for the rest of the match.

Roddick, with a 7-0 winning Davis Cup record before this tie, lost his opening singles in four sets against Arnaud Clement. The Americans, champions a record 31 times, last reached the final in 1997.

At the start Roddick had obviously learned some lessons from his opening day defeat by Clement. While still relying on his heavy first serve, he tried to move Grosjean around the court, use slice as much as power and wait for the right moment to crowd the net.

But Grosjean still had the more varied game and his drop shot earned him a clutch of key points against the American.

Grosjean, who beat James Blake in four sets on Friday, started the stronger and broke the American's serve in the third game when Roddick netted a simple forehand. Grosjean weathered five deuces on his next service game and took the set in 42 minutes.

But he made four unforced errors in his first service game of the second set to give Roddick a 2-0 lead and a spurt of 10 winning points put the 20-year-old firmly in charge. In the sixth game of the set Grosjean tripped while reaching for a running forehand along the baseline and went over on his ankle.

After a lengthy break in which it was heavily strapped, Grosjean resumed grimacing, but his movement appeared unaffected. The Frenchman wasted two break points at 4-2 and, despite missing out on two set points, Roddick served out to make it one set all.

Roddick suffered a relapse in the third set, returning to the powerplay which had failed badly against Clement. Two smashed forehands over the baseline allowed Grosjean to break him in the sixth game and seven successive points for the Frenchman set up a two sets to one lead.

The fourth set was a nightmare for Roddick as Grosjean dug deep into his locker to pull out a string of dream shots. The American held on until the fifth game when he chose the wrong moment to rush the net and Grosjean passed him with ease.

A double fault on break point gave Grosjean a 3-2 lead and the Frenchman cruised to a merited victory on his first match point as Roddick stood disconsolately at the back of the court, gesturing at captain Patrick McEnroe at his own stupidity.

United States comes apart on clay of Roland Garros, again

By MICHAEL McDONOUGH
Associated Press Writer
September 23, 2002

PARIS (AP) -- After the United States lost to France in the Davis Cup on the clay at Roland Garros, team captain Patrick McEnroe was thinking positive about the future.

"We're going to be a force on clay,'' McEnroe pledged after the loss, which gave France a spot in the Davis Cup final against Russia.

Sebastien Grosjean overcame an ankle injury and beat Andy Roddick 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, and James Blake beat Arnaud Clement 6-4, 6-3 in 49 minutes in the final singles match. France won 3-2 overall.

The loss was the United States' fifth to France in five appearances at Roland Garros. The U.S. team hadn't played at the home of the French Open since 1932, but Roddick, Blake and Todd Martin struggled on the slow surface -- just as their predecessors had.

"I don't know if I wouldn't have minded a faster surface, but you've got to play with the cards that you're dealt,'' Roddick said.

Defending champion France will play Russia, a 3-2 winner over Argentina in the other semifinal, in the Nov. 29-Dec. 1 final. The French are seeking their first back-to-back titles since 1932.

"He just stayed there mentally the whole time,'' Roddick said of Grosjean, ranked No. 9 in the ATP's entry system. "When I didn't make one or two forehand errors in a service game, he was ready to come up with the shots."

Both players battled injuries on the dry and slightly chilly center court. Grosjean had his right ankle taped after skidding and falling in the second set, which he lost. Roddick played the bulk of the match with a large patch on his lower back to soothe sore muscles.

"I don't think I served my best today,'' Roddick said. "I didn't really have the same pop I had the other day on my serve.''

Roddick had six aces, compared to 20 in his loss to Clement on Friday. In the last set, he double-faulted to concede a break, after which he sat down, cursed, and threw his towel angrily to the ground.

Roddick also struggled with his forehand, although in the second set he fired one Grosjean, who crouched at the net and used his racket to shield himself. The shot bounced off and Roddick volleyed it to the baseline to win the point.

McEnroe saw improvement in Roddick's play.

"His game's improved, but it's got to continue,'' he said. "Now players know him and they know his weaknesses. The stakes get higher as you get better.''

The United States, the winner of a record 31 Davis Cup titles, last reached the final in 1997 and has not won the event since 1995. The Americans lost their four previous matches against France at Roland Garros between 1928-32.

In addition to Blake's win over Clement, the Americans' only other victory came in the doubles. Blake and Martin beat Mickael Llodra and Fabrice Santoro in five sets.

France took a 2-0 advantage Friday after Clement beat Roddick and Grosjean defeated Blake. The Americans rallied from an 0-2 deficit just once, in the 1934 interzone final against Australia.

France, 7-7 against the United States, hasn't lost a Davis Cup match in more than two years, running its streak to eighth straight. The French record of 11 straight tie wins was set in 1932.

After the winning point, the diminutive Grosjean was lifted in the air by his teammates as French fans cheered. But the dejected Roddick had already walked off.

"I wasn't really hanging around much to watch the spectacle of it,'' he said. "Obviously, I'm sure it's a nice feeling.''
