Ranking when won first Grand Slam

A lot is said about the age at which players win their first Grand Slam but not about their ranking.

(This all comes from when I was wondering whether the next first-time Grand Slam winner would be someone whom we might expect to be challenging, due to consistently high ranking [Murray, Soderling, Berdych, Tsonga] or a less-established tour player/young player coming out of the blue to win one...)

So here's the ranking of all first-time Grand Slam winners as far back as the ATP lists their ranking at the time (1985):

3 - Novak Djokovic
3 - Juan Carlos Ferrero
4 - Lleyton Hewitt
4 - Andy Roddick
5 - Roger Federer
5 - Thomas Muster
5 - Rafael Nadal
6 - Stefan Edberg
6 - Juan Martin del Potro
7 - Andres Gomez
7 - Yevgeny Kafelnikov
7 - Petr Korda
7 - Marat Safin
7 - Michael Stich
9 - Jim Courier
11 - Sergi Bruguera
11 - Pat Cash
12 - Carlos Moya
12 - Pete Sampras
13 - Richard Krajicek
14 - Andre Agassi
14 - Patrick Rafter
18 - Thomas Johansson
19 - Michael Chang
20 - Boris Becker
22 - Albert Costa
44 - Gaston Gaudio
66 - Gustavo Kuerten
125- Goran Ivanisevic

So it looks like 7 is a lucky number after all. David Pics Ferrer must be a shoe-in for the Australian Open. You heard it here first ;)
