James in 2011

What do you think will happen? Only one month left and we start next season, maybe the last one for James  Hope he still can show his better side before retirement  This year he played great in January, maybe after the break he will be able to repeat that in 2011 :wavey:

His performance in Australia will give us a lot of answers. I really hope he comes into the season fresh and fully committed to success at every tournament!!! When James retires it would be one of the saddest days in tennis history.

I can't wait for January. I love spending nights watching AO and I also vividly remember watching del Potro-Blake match this year. It's really nice memory and I hope I'll have much more similar to this one. Beginning of 2011 will be really important for James, so we have to cross our fingers for a good start ;)

Before january he'll play Copa Argentina Peugeot exh in Buenos Aires next 17/18/19 december along with Nalby and Fish

KrisJB

Probably, it will be not his last season considering his great love for the game. Different things happen, f.e. Jonas Bjorkman was able to play semifinals of Wimbledon in 2006 at the age of 34, Agassi was finalist of US Open at the age of 35, so maybe James will make a pleasant surprise? Who knows, everything will depend on his health. He should also work on his fitness as his movement is the key to return to TOP 50. Do you know if James has recovered from his knee problems?

mateusz2904
12-11-2010, 02:11 PM
From time to time a look for some news, but don't know anything about any injuries. Actually, during off-season players rarely talk about these problems. If they're fine, they practise; if they aren't, they hope to recover. So we need to wait and check how James will perform in Buenos, and then in his first ATP tournaments of the year.

He will play vs Fish tonight after Nalby/Chela which starts at 8h00 PM

Blake-Fish
6-4 6-4

To be honest, I'm really surprised of this result. I'd thought it would be nice if James won a set, but he managed to win it in quite easily, I think. It's just exhibition tournament, but it always shows a bit of real players' trim and their chances in new season. That's why I'm really pleased to see that. Let's see how he will do in his next match against Monaco on Saturday.

mateusz2904

Blake-Monaco
4-6 2-6

Monaco lost to Nalbandian in final.

Thanks. :) Some haters were trying to make it sound like James was too arrogant to play AO qualies. :cuckoo:

Not sure how I feel about him having no coach, but I guess he has enough experience on tour...

mateusz2904
01-14-2011, 03:24 PM
In my view he wants to be on tour as long as possible whcih is rather obvious... He started playing late (he was 20) and he doesn't want his retirement yet.
Decision on leaving coach is weird, but it seems James know what he's doing. We'll see. Can't wait to see him back in 2011.

Because there were so many withdrawals for San Jose, James ended up not even needing the WC. ;)

[6] Benjamin Becker (GER) - Ricardas Berankis (LTU)
Dustin Brown (GER) - Donald Young (USA)
Qualifier - James Blake (USA)
Milos Raonic (CAN) - [4] Xavier Malisse (BEL)^This is his quarter of the draw. Qualifying draw isn't out yet, so I have no idea who he could face.

You are wrong, it's simple to predict he gonna lose with Levine or his deep run gonna finish on 2nd round.

DartMarcus
02-07-2011, 07:06 PM
James should beat Levine.
Beating Mallisse/Raonic would be hard. These guys have been playing great this season so far. Reaching at least semis here would prove that James can come back to top 50 in a short time. We'll see!
Come on JB!!

KarlyM

San Jose R1: James def Levine 7-5 6-1 in 73 minutes.
James seemed very rusty, but looked like he was moving ok. No noticeable injury issues. He was making a lot of errors in the 1st set which was keeping Jesse in the set. But in the 2nd, Jesse was clearly having issues with his knees (both were heavily taped) and he wasn't really running down balls or trying hard. I'm more interested in seeing how James will do against Malisse or Raonic in the next round. ;)

James faces Raonic in R2 on Wednesday. Raonic hit 20 aces against Malisse and some of his serves went over 140 MPH. If he plays like this later today, James will have problems.

From Raonic's blog on the San Jose website (http://www.sapopentennis.com/news/news.asp?story_id=387):
Speaking of players you grow up watching, my next match is against James Blake. It's nice playing these guys you used to watch. I think I'll have an advantage - I'll know him more than he'll know me! So I'll use that as much as I can. I know he'll go for his shots. I'll just take care of my serve and hopefully I'll get a few chances on the return. I look forward to it.

I love James' attitude to life, tennis, tour. When it comes to this, he's my hero.

Great performance of Raonic, if he continues to improve he can achieve a lot in the near future. James played good I think, especially in the second set. If he had managed to win that one, everything could have happened in 3rd part of the match. But now we just have to wait for the next draw;)

Memphis draw looks nice. Mello in the first round and if he beats Kevin Anderson, he should make semis because Raonic/Verdasco will be way too tired and the winner of that 1st round match will probably lose the next or withdraw

He gets Nishikori or Dabul in R2. They don't play until tomorrow - hopefully, the day off will help James. ;)

Update: Nishikori won today 6-2 7-6(5).

Wins over Mello, Levine and Becker.
Losses against Raonic, Kendrick and Nishikori.
Would not call wins great as well as would not call losses miserable.
Raonic has been on fire, Kendrick and Nishikori are in-form hard court specialists.
James got WC for IW and Miami, so we'll see him more in the few weeks.
Hope he can improve his level.

Everytime he loses there's a bunch of people saying "James should just retire :o".the GM people are surely saying it from a mean/bad place, but one has to wonder how long James will be ok losing in the second round of every tournament. not saying he should retire immeidately, but I'm sure this isn't how he wants to go out.

^ Welcome! :wavey:

I have read his book as well. I really liked it and it's a pretty easy read. ;) One important note about it is that it's not a typical autobiography. It mainly focuses on the late 2003 to late 2005 period -- his father's death, broken neck/zoster virus, what it was like not being able to play, and the comeback. But there are little stories mixed in about his childhood, scoliosis diagnosis, etc. It's mostly off-court issues and very little specifics about actual matches (except for the Agassi one, of course!).

Why he didn't start at the French Open?

Which tournament will he play next?

KarlyM
05-16-2011, 09:23 PM
^ James wasn't ranked high enough to make the main draw for the French Open and he didn't enter qualifying. My guess is that at this time in his career he didn't like his chances of actually qualifying (was ranked #149 and had only played 2 clay matches this year at the time of the entry deadline). The funny thing is if he had entered qualifying, he would have been the #6 seed.

His next tournament is Wimbledon - he's #2 on the alternate list. There's always several withdrawals before the draw is made, so he will very likely make the main draw. :)

Marcos Baghdatis CYP (32) v James Blake USA
Andreas Seppi ITA v Albert Montanes ESP
Kevin Anderson RSA v Illya Marchenko UKR
Jeremy Chardy FRA v Novak Djokovic SRB (2) It could have been worse. Baghdatis won their only previous meeting (Rotterdam last year), and he played pretty well this week in Rosmalen (wins over Clement, Haase, and Gremelmayr; lost to Dodig). Seppi is in the SF of won Eastbourne this week and James lost in straights to him in R1 here 2 years ago. :p I wonder how James will do after not playing for 6 weeks and no match play on grass. I'm not expecting anything - I'm more looking forward to the summer hard court events. ;)

James made a good effort. He could have just given up in the 3rd set and left, but he kept fighting. He was up a break early in the 5th, but when it came down to it - he made too many errors. But not bad. ;)

I gotta laugh about my comment in the post above. Mohamed Lahyani was in the chair, and Pam Shriver was courtside. Luckily for Mo it was a quick 5-setter, and Pam learned her lesson from last year (I was LMAO listening to her explain on air how wrong she was).

From Tennis.com (http://www.tennis.com/articles/templates/news.aspx?articleid=12741&zoneid=25), a quote from James yesterday about retirement:

"It hasnít crossed my mind yet. Thatís going to be a decision thatís going to take longer than one match and I wouldnít want to make it within an hour, two hours, or even a day of a loss, especially because your head isnít where itís supposed to be at that time. Thereís probably been around, I donít know how many matches Iíve lost over the years, probably about a couple of hundred, and Iíd say out of 200 about 198 of them I probably thought I should retire right after those. Iíd come back the next day ready to play and ready to get better. Iím thinking this one will be the same." ;)

His half of the draw is wide open - Capdeville, Soeda, and De Voest are the other seeds. Russell, Young, Reynolds, and Dabul (+Ginepri) are on the top half. [11] John Isner (USA) - bye
[WC] Denis Kudla (USA) - Tobias Kamke (GER)
James Blake (USA) - Tatsuma Ito (JPN)
[8] David Nalbandian (ARG) - bye

I think James can beat Ito if he plays like he has been lately. Nalbandian is a real question mark - hasn't played since losing in Wimbledon R3 to Federer. He missed Davis Cup this month due to a hematoma, and earlier missed the entire clay season for a hernia operation and some sort of thigh muscle injury. Then again, Nalbandian came into this tournament last year as a WC ranked #117 and won, so who knows?

The first set was so-so. He started the match by getting broken, then broke right back. He got up a break to get to 4-1, but Kukushkin got back on serve. There seemed to be a lot of errors. He obviously got more comfortable in the 2nd set. ;)

He said in the on-court interview afterward that his knee and shoulder feel good. :) Mal Washington was doing the interview and he mentioned his loss to James in Newport 1999 (James' first ATP win and Mal's 2nd-to-last match of his career). Mal was making some jokes about it saying it was the worst loss of his career and it ended a long ATP losing streak for James (not even true ). could have been worse, could have been better. Ferrer seemed to have some problems. After loss in Wimedon R16 he played two good matches in Davis Cup (against Roddick and Fish), then was in Bastad final (l. to Soderling) and during US Open Series won only one match (Dimitrov in 3 sets in Cincy). Good draw for him! He usually does pretty well at the USO. Good luck James. :yeah:

James' first round opponent is Jesse Huta Galung.

Look who showed up to the Taste of Tennis event last Thursday night... ;)

US Open R1: James def. Huta Galung 6-4 6-2 4-6 6-4 (http://www.usopen.org/en_US/news/match_reports/2011-08-30/201108311314749187691.html?promo=home)

US Open R2: James lost to Ferrer 4-6 3-6 4-6 (http://www.usopen.org/en_US/news/match_reports/2011-09-02/201109021314998551428.html)

^There are highlight videos in the US Open website links I posted in the scorelines. ;)

Andrew Lawrence at SI (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/andrew_lawrence/09/03/blake.ferrer/index.html?sct=tn_wr_a1) did a good write-up following the loss. Highlight of the article:
Afterward he confessed that the straight sets clinic was disappointing, but not that disappointing. "I'm going to keep playing until it stops being fun," he said. How close is he to that? "Not close at all."

I don't know what James' schedule is for the fall. He hasn't entered any ATP events yet. Maybe he will go to some of the U.S. challenger tournaments, like the two $100K California events in early October. We'll see. ;)

Oh well, losing to a top 5 player is no shame. :)

A few days ago James wrote on his facebook that he's gonna play in Stockholm.

^Yup, he made it into the MD for Stockholm. He entered Vienna, but didn't immediately make the MD (6th alternate).

James also entered the Sacramento Challenger (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?t=190341) the week of October 3rd (2 weeks before Stockholm). :) Karlovic also entered!

That's a good chance to earn some points. James didn't play much this year, so I'm pleased that he decided to enter this challenger before Stockholm.

Sacramento CH results:
R1: James def. A. Delic 6-4 7-5 in 90 minutes.
R2: James def. Guccione 6-4 6-4 in 58 minutes. He won 81% 1st serve and 94% 2nd serve points and never faced a BP in this match.
QF: James def. Sock 6-4 6-2 in 62 minutes.
SF: James def. Alex Kuznetsov 6-2 7-5 in 67 minutes. Never faced a BP in this match either.

The final is on Sunday against a MUCH tougher opponent - Ivo Karlovic. I think we all know how much James "loves" to play against Ivo, so this should be interesting.

The good news is that James is guaranteed to get more ranking points this week (60 or 100) than he has to defend in Stockholm (45). Stockholm is the only points he has to defend until February, so his ranking will be staying above the #75 he is now for awhile. :)

And Delpo; I am so torn at the moment. Now it would be nice if he capitalized on his form.
