I think that a SF in Sydney will be a good start of the year. :) And maybe R4 or QF at Australian Open will be great. :D

My hopes aren't as bright as they once were for juans return. After getting bageled by lopez in his last match i'm sure that hurt him. Hopefully he can win a few matches down under, i don't want to expect him to reach QFs in a slam only to be put out round 1.

Nice thread.

vn01
12-06-2010, 07:16 AM
But against Lopez he had 10 or 12 BPs and converted only 1. His problem is mental. We all know that. But more matches he plays, more practice he'll get. :)

Actually, he had chances against Rochus, too. He was making a lot UEs and his 1st serve was not at its best level. but he was playing not bad, even well. :wavey:

I don't know why he's not playing this week. Maybe because he usually skips the 1st week of the season and plays Sydney/Auckland. He won in Auckland in 2009.

Hey, friends, 5 more days before he gets back on the court. In 3 days, we'll see his opponent. I'm so excited. VAMOS! :worship:

del Potro to play Lopez. So annoyed, I wanted him to get an easier draw and get a few matches under his belt. I'm not sure how it is going to go and how ready he is but he def needs match play.

vn01
01-08-2011, 07:48 AM
Very tough draw for Delpo! :( I wanted an easier one, too. Lopez is a shit returner, if Del Potro serves well, he has good chance. Also, in Tokyo, Del Potro had 12 BPs in the whole match and that means Lalo didn't serve very well there(I couldn't watch the match). Delpo has chance. I'm looking forward to the match! VAMOS! :worship:

Rain in Sydney.

Average game by Del Potro so far. When 1st serve gets in, it's OK, but it's only 55%. He needs to work more on his 2nd serve. He might have won more return points, too.

All I can say for now, is that, Delpo will need a lot time to get back in the tennis elite. He'll have to play many tough matches to get back in top 15

vn01
01-10-2011, 01:59 AM

Let's concentrate on the next Delpo's match- vs. Florian Mayer. I believe, our boy is able to grab the win. What do you think? :wavey:

Certinfy
01-10-2011, 05:28 PM
I would of been happy with him winning one set, but winning the match and saving a match point? That's unreal, will no doubt boost his confidence a lot.

Definitely another winnable match against Mayer, but it will be hard.

vn01
01-10-2011, 05:59 PM
The only two things, I didn't like from Delpo's game(I watched only a short video) was that he seems a bit clumpsy, but I'm sure that with the more matches he play, he'll get in better physical form. :)
The second thing is the low % of 1st serve in. It needs to be around 65-70%, so that Delpo would be able to win easier points.

I look forward to the match with Mayer. VAMOS! :wavey:

Certinfy
01-10-2011, 06:18 PM

I don't think there'll be stream for the match.

Just to note down that I was mistaken. The match should start at 3.30-4 AM CET. This means 5.30-6 BG time. Hope, the match is about 90 minutes, because at 8 I start school and I should get out of home at 7.30.

He'll win a couple of matches in the AO. But I'm not expecting him to go far, which is only understandable. Not that long ago since he came back from an injury.

Anyway, the more match practice he gets, the better it is. At least he won one match here, which is good for his coifidence. I hope he can build on that in the Australian Open and pull out a few wins.

Hey, guys, where do you expect to see Del Potro in the rankings in the end of the 2011 season. He'll start winning points after Australian Open. I'll give very bold prediction with top 20.

Even in his 1st match after the injury, he showed us that he's back and the more matches he plays, the better form he'll be in. I expect wonderful things from Montreal to Paris-Bercy. :yeah:

Hey, guys, where do you expect to see Del Potro in the rankings in the end of the 2011 season. He'll start winning points after Australian Open. I'll give very bold prediction with top 20.

I'm more optimist: he will be ranked top 7,

2011 will be a remake of 2008 season where he was ranked top 80 at start and finished ranked top 8

I am pretty bad at this sort of prediction but I think between 20-25 ranking.

I think this is realistic. It takes time to come back after such a long injury break. It takes time to find the game, be confident, be in good shape, be mentally strong. He basically has to start over again. I would expect to see some better results as the season goes on. But I doubt he will be ranked higher than Top 20. I'd be happy to see him prove me wrong though ;)

Del Potri vs. Dudi Sela in the Australian Open Round 1. I think, it's not a bad draw, but in the 2nd round, Delpo may play with Baghdatis.

Discuss! Vamos! :wavey:

Elbarto
01-14-2011, 08:51 AM
Baghdatis seems to be slightly injured :

Defending champion and tournament No. 2 seed Marcos Baghdatis has withdrawn from the International Sydney event in Australia with a groin injury. Sustaining the groin injury during a practice session late last week, Baghdatis remains entered in next weeks’ Australian Open.

“It’s been four days I have pain,” admitted Baghdatis. I don’t want to risk too much by going in the match and making it worse, so I took the decision today with my team not to participate here.”

so Del Potro has a real chance to go in third round if Baghdatis is not at 100%,

I think Del Potro with a little luck can go in fourth round :

R1: Sela
R2: Baghdatis
R3: Melzer
R4: Murray
QF: Soderling/Tsonga/Gulbis
SF: Nadal/Nalbandian/Youzhny/Ferrer/Cilic/Isner
F: Federer/Djoko/Davydenko/Berdych/Roddick

vn01
01-14-2011, 05:51 PM
I think R3 is the best he can reach. It'll too difficult for Delpo to beat Melzer, but let's concentrate on Sela. I hope, our boy wins the match. :yeah:

I think R3 would be a good performance. Even if he just wins the first match it would still be progress and something to build on.

Going anywhere beyond R3 would be a pretty incredible achievement under the circumstances. I might be a little wary of him playing Murray in that situation as it might do more harm than good.

Baggy was too strong for Delpo today. Del Potro made some good shots, but also made a lot of errors. I think that it was a good start of the year for Delpo, with 2 wins and 2 losses. The plan for Australian Open(2nd round) was carried out.

But Del Potro needs more and more work and improvement.

Next up is San Jose! VAMOS!!!

I have also changed the title, so here we can discuss Del Potro's tournaments in February and March

He'll play in:

Featuring:

Andy Roddick
Fernando Verdasco
Gael Monfils
Lleyton Hewitt
James Blake
Juan Martin del Potro

impressive players list for memphis,

maybe Del Potro should play some challengers tournaments to be sure to have a lot of matchs in a week ( easy opponents )

I hope he isn't too discouraged right now. I was encouraged by what I saw. It just takes time and matches to get back from a big injury like this. Biggest thing I noticed was his footwork isn't where it needs to be, he was always a step behind.

vn01
01-20-2011, 02:17 PM
I also think he can play 1-2 Challengers

After Delray Beach, there is Davis Cup, but I don't believe he'll play for Argentina, so he can play 1 Challenger event, but I doubt he'll decide to do it.

Hope, he can reach at least 1/2 final in one of the events in USA(Delray Beach gives the best opportunity

I've found some stats for Delpo for his first 4 matches of the year. Here they are:
-54 aces(13.5 average per match)
-1st serve in: 58% average per match
-Pts won on 1st serve: 72.5% per match
-Pts won on 2nd serve: 50.5% per match
-BP won; 7/14(50%)
-BP saved: 17/29(58.6%)

Discuss these stats, please

Elbarto
01-21-2011, 07:54 PM
do you have his statistics for 2009 ?

it's difficult to compare if we don't have all the elements,

the TV commentators have said that the Delpo' speed serve was often lower than the Baghdatis' serve, which was strange and unusual because the serve ( with his forehand ) is the main weapon for Del Potro ( he can serve very fast on first and second ball )

Ok, so what do you think he should do the next couple weeks? Play a challenger? Practice more? Work on fitness? The only thing I think might be a good idea is play Hawaii challenger. It would be good practice, I think he could easily beat all those guys, good for the confidence, and come on, it's Hawaii. Hard to mope around and get down on yourself in a place like that.

What do you all think about his comeback? Can he gain back his pre-injury form? I have doubts, but hope the opposite. The only thing is he has 6 more tournaments with good positions, then he enters tournaments as a number 400 whatever. So? Do you think he can do well in Memphis or Indian Wells later?

I think he can, but it will probably take some time, maybe a year, maybe even longer. he has don't as expected up till now. He hasn't won more or less matches than I though he would. I'd be happy with a couple of wins each tournament, which is what I expected and what we basically got.

Will be interesting to see how he does in the upcoming months, though like I said.. I'm not expecting any miracles this season. It will take some time before he's back to his pre-injury form.

Anyway, where is he playing next? I know he's playing San Jose, but is he playing anywhere before that?

he should start to have interesting results with the clay season,

then with the hard court season ( summer ) Del Potro will be much more dangerous for his opponents ( he should beat more easily guys like top 30 players ), then I hope he will play with a solid top 20 level for the rest of the season

no davis cup for Del Potro in march :

En la primera ronda de la "Copa Davis", Argentina se enfrentará Rumania, del 11 al 13 de marzo, con un equipo conformado por Nalbandián, Mónaco, y el equipo de dobles Schwank/Zeballos.

Pero Del Potro no jugará, ya que el apunta a los torneos norteamericanos del "ATP World Tour" donde se siente más cómodo. Sin embargo jugaría en julio, si la Argentina llega a cuartos de final, probablemente ante República Checa.

Del Potro's carrier is one of the saddest I've ever seen. He's 2009 form was so bright and I really believed he can make the top 2 in 2010,and then came the injury......I think he'll never gain back his 2009 form.....Federer,Nadal and Djokovic are way lucky because of Potro's absence. I think Juan Martin would be a multiple slma winner without that fucking injury. I guess everybody agrees with this statement,it's just too painful to write it down.

I'm sure he will be, but it may take longer than you expect. I think he will top 40 but not top 20 by the end of the year. If he is, that's fantastic.

If not, well I'm sure he will get there in the next year. The most important thing is that he doesn't suffer any more major injuries and stays healthy. :)

The more he plays the more it will all come back to him...and the more it comes back to him, the less numbers he will have in relation to his ranking! :p eventually he will get that back down to a 2 digit number then a single #1 for sure! ;)

We still have to be patient. He said last night that he is far away from his real form - thats obvious. It's not bad he reached semis here, maybe not win tomorrow, but still impressing comeback.

Exactly. From what I have seen so far this week his movement needs improving but I have no doubt he will get there.

Delpo lost to Verdasco  He didn't play that bad, but he just can't handle with these guys, yet. I am optimistic about him :)

Next up is Isner in the 1st round in Memphis :wavey:

Don't worry. He'll win over Isner in Memphis. Isner is a very overrated player imo!

He is working his way back up. I have confidence in him. I think he'll make it back to where he was before the injury. No doubt it'll take time though.

He lost unfortunately, but look the bright side.He reached the semis with solid game. Hope he can reach at least the quarters in Memphis. Quarters there would be another 90 pints, so slowly but surely he will be inside 200.

Can't get rid of the sad feeling over Delpo's 2010 missing. Who else think he could have win Roland Garros (or at least semi finals) and maybe Us Open? I think at least many tournaments, masters series included.I know it's nonsense talkin about it but still interested...
I think Nadal,Federer and Djokovic are extremely lucky Juan skipped last season....Sad.Hope he will be in the top 100 by the end of summer.

What do you think how far he can go in Memphis? I think quarter final.

Elbarto
02-14-2011, 01:29 PM
here is the potential opponents he would play in his draw :

1st round : Isner
2nd round : Schuettler
quarter : Karlovic
semi: Roddick
final: Verdasco ( or Raonic :D )

I think Del Potro if he maintains his level of game that he showed in San Jose he can reach the semi,

if he can improve his level of game then there is a chance he can reach the final for a revenge against Verdasco ( or Raonic )

If he beats Isner, anything can happen:) 2R and Q are easy, and semis can be easy too, because I think Roddick could lose in 1R or Q.

I don't know if Verdasco is going to get past Raonic *again* in the first round. This will be an interesting tourney to watch. And WTH is with the doubles with Sexy? Quite an interesting combo. At least he's getting all sorts of matches in, singles or doubles, and that can only be a good thing if he doesn't get too worn out.

I looked at the Tennis Channel schedule and they are only showing it starting Saturday. Nothing on ESPN that I can see. It really sucks that they block all the tourneys this week on tennistv in the US, but we can't see all of it, just what the cable channels decide to put on TV. Then the government shut down a bunch of those livestreaming sites, so can't use those. Gee, thanks Homeland Security! My tax dollars hard at work.

good win for Del Potro,

now he must be careful with his next opponent Ivan Dodig, this guy seems in top form since the beginning of the season ( he is the only player to win a set against Djoko at the Australian open, he won his first ATP title at Zagreb 2 weeks ago ),

I hope also that his wrist is still Ok

I am quite happy I found a stream to watch this match. He's improved even from last week. He should beat Russell next round. I really would love to go to Memphis, but it's a 13 hour drive from here and I have to work tomorrow and Sunday, plus *very short* vacation is next weekend (not even a vacation, really, just manipulating my work schedule).

Really hope he'll beat Russell, but surely. Then comes Roddick possibly. Don't think so Hewitt, but Lleyton'd be better for Juan Martin. Roddick will be extremely hard to play against. He played Brisbane final this year,so good form. If he lose the semifinals, thats still 180 points. He'll be around 130 from next week. Hopefuly good match tonite.

impressive win from Del Potro 6-4, 6-2 :)

a very solid service game, Russell didn't manage to have a break point, Del Potro seems to be quick with his footwork, a great defense, this can be an asset against Roddick for the semi

Very good win for Delpo. I think, it was one of his best matches of the year, so far. He is close to find his 2009 form. :) I am so happy.

Keep taking the points! He's definitely moving up quickly. I expected him to move up, but not this quick! :worship: All the hard work is paying off.

So, because someone at work made a comment about 3 different reviews and that we are in an inspection window, plus that I have a continuing education thing due end of the week, I have to go into work today. ON MY DAY OFF. It's that, or just stay at work 24 hours a day because I already work 12 hours a day. I will go in for 4 hours then come home to watch the match with A-rod, then maybe go back to work and finish up paperwork or whatever. It never ends.

Go kick Andy's ass, Juan. :yeah:

cobalt60

The year is young; he will get back to his potential. He played so solid yesterday but today sluggish and his serve was off. But there were flashes of old JM there.

02-19-2011, 10:09 PM
Roddick's serve gave the American the win. That's it. Delpo played well, but he continues with his comeback great. I think, he is at 65% on hardcourts. If he makes them 90 at the end of Miami Masters, after Wimbledon, he'll be one of the best hardcourters of the year :yeah:

locyka19, why after every loss, you start saying his comeback is not this year. :o
Roddick is a Top 10 player and is still a very good player, despite being almost 30 years old. It was a normal loss, although Delpo could win the match. It's his 4th tournament only. He has enough time. All his fans wish is to see Juan Martin in Top 20 by the end of the year and I see him doing it, if he continues this way. ;)

In Delray Beach, he'll meet Berankis in R1. If he beats him, I think Delpo will reach the Final. But I'll be happy with R2 or QF performance, too. These 2 weeks were a lot more than we expected. A not so good performance in Delray Beach will not be fatal.

VAMOS DEL POTRO!!!!!!!!! :worship:

Elbarto
02-19-2011, 10:50 PM
pathetic performance from Del Potro, I'm disappointed, I thought he was ready to beat Roddick, he showed some interesting tennis in his 3 last matchs but today he was unrecognizable, slow move, bad service, a lot of unforced errors,

maybe he was uncomfortable with his injury on his thigh, which can explain his slow move,

I hope a better Del Potro at Delray Beach, maybe he can reach the final and get a revenge against Roddick at Delray Beach

I'd love to see him get to the final in Delray, for purely selfish reasons. I have awesome seats for quarters through finals. ;)

Today's match wasn't the best. He looked off, a bit tired, and I have no idea what he did to his thigh. Get some rest Juan and start all over in Delray.

Edit: BTW, anyone know what his ranking will be now?
