Safin: I am driving on my beemers crying "Bite Me" to the villains. OR Safin: You can "bite me", you, car stealers! I'll still drive on my sweet beemers!"

Russia's best tennis player bought a car to stipe car thieves.

In the autumn 2002, just before a Davis Cup tie Marat Safin's four-wheel-drive BMW X5 costing around $90 000 got stolen. The car was never found but Safin without much hesitation collected the insurance money and bought an exact same vehicle. And now when the Davis Cup returns to Moscow (tomorrow Russia is facing Thailand) Marat again drives over to his training setions to the "Louzhniki" sports-complex on the twin-brother of his stolen "beemer". It seems that Safin is teasing the car theives. Whatever was (is) the case the last disappearence of his car didn't detter Marat from winning his matches. And even if the same story repeats this time, we might be sure in the victory of our countrymen over the Thai....

http://www.kp.ru/upimg/photo_28502.jpg

Yevgeni Kafelnikov is too loyal to his habbits. The "newly-baked" coach or team-Russia always liked Audi cars, and in 2002 he drove the roads of Russia on his cool A8 sedan. Today there's a lot more of Kafelnikov and he's much harder to miss- his weight is nearing the milestone number "one hundred", but for some reason his car only decreased in size: he's now driving on a small A6.

Article by Sergei Deryabkin
Louzhniki Sports Complex
translated by me

Yesterday <now it's two days ago> in the "Louzhniki" a pre-tournament press conference with the Russian team took place. Before the reporters appeared the captain of the team Shamil Tarpischev, Marat Safin, Mikhail Youzhny, Nikolai Davydenko and Igor Andreev. Following the tradition, the first to speak was the captain Tarpischev, who was in excellent mood:

" The present season proved to be the most successful in the history of our country's tennis. to get even better, it's conclusion will take place on the Russian courts. Now we are hosting the Davis cup tie, in October the Kremlin Cup and the St. Petersbourg Open await us, and from 22 to 28 of November in the new complex in Krylatskoe the Final of the Four of Fed Cup will take place, in which our young women will attempt to avenge their last years defeat. Combining this all: this is a "big tennis fall" - a great gift to the tennis fans.

Concerning the upcomming match with the Thai I'd say that we are clear favourites. That is because of our high status (wtf?) and the fact that we are playing at home, which means that we had the right to select the playing surface. Discussing this with the players we stopped on red clay. These are our motives: the leader of our opponents, Paradorn Srichaphan feel more comfortable playing on faster courts, where the rallies don't last too long. we needed try and nullify the main advantage of Thai, especially considering the fact that at present the head-to-head of Paradorn and Russian players is roughly equal.

Quite naturally it was pleasnt for me too look at the recent success of our men. The Safin-Youzhny final in Beijing and Andreev's rise to the final in Bukharest tell us that the guys entered the last few months of the season in good form. We shall not hurry tagging Davydenko a "spare player" too. Nikolai is training in Moscow the longest, hence he's the most accustomed to the unique features of the courts.

Question to Safin. "Did you make any conclusions after the last loss to the Belorussians?":
Safin: Ofcourse we would not repeat certain mistakes again, but to tell you the truth , I don't think that in that tie we were the favourites. Our opponents were playing 'at home' chose synthetic court surface, on which Mirnyi and Voltchukov feel themselves great. Therefore I wouldn't like to compare Belarus with Thailand. Thse are two completely different situations.

<!!!!> Surprizingly, no further questions arose from the journalists < I just love the Russian Press> and the Press Conference came to the end just minutes after it's start.

ANDREEV IS READY TO PLAY AT 100%
At the exit our reporters managed to catch Igor Andreev, who greatly improved his game from last to this season <why couldn't those idiots ask the questions on the press conference!?>.

"Ofcourse. I don't just sit and do nothing - instead, I train actively," explained Andreev, "Plus, I'm siply much more experienced. last year was only my debut year in ATP , but this season you may say that I'm among the equal to me. This gives me confidence, which has great effect on consistency. This is where the good results are from.

Question: You would have to play with Thailand in some unusual conditions: on clay, but indoors. Does that add any inconvenience?

" There Are some minor difficulties concerning this, but they are easily solvable, atleast for me. Ofcourse I could speak about this matter with complete certainty only after my first official match in the Davis Cup- before I only did some training on those courts.

Question: In the last couple of months you performed pretty well pairing Davydenko in doubles. Are you ready to do the same on Saturday, should need arise?
"Definitely. If the captain would think that such a move is neccessary I will to everything I can to bring that victory point to the team."

Question: How long did it take you to forget about the loss to Mirnyi in Minsk, considering the fact that you played him and won just a few months earlier in St. Petersbourg?
"Tennis is a sport in which tournaments follow eachother every week, which simply doesn't leave us time for grievances. If you're worrying too much about one lost match you simply wouldn't be able to prepare for the next. Therefore I tried to pull my conclusions regarding the reasons of that loss and not return to that again.

Question: Do you still spend most of your free time in Spain?
"Yes, although there's now a lot less of that free time we are talking about. Remeber that I'm playing a lot more these days. In addition, i try to come home to Moscow more often, where I can rest psychologically.

Question: what are your plans for the remainder of the season?
" I will play every other week. While I have a lot of energy, why not give it a 100%? Naturaly, I want to rise as high as possible in the ATP standings.

YOUZHNY IS IN BAD CONDITION
Mikhail's coach was as always friendly and was happy to answer all our questions:
Question: How would you rate the physical form of your 'trainee' <sorry I'm tired and can't find a better word now>?
"As a bad one.If you take a five point ranking table, I'll give him a solid 3, without any plus or minus. This was expected, because his peak condition was in August, during the Olympic Games and the US Open. Physical condition is something Mikhail doesn't have at the moment. Plus, he is still disturbed by the hip injury he suffered a while ago.All analysts think that in Beijing Youzhny reached the final only because of his head, cleaver actions on court that is.

Reporter: Isn't that great?
" Yes. When a tennis player, playing not at his best, reaches a final of a tournament that indicates a certain, somethat high, class."

Question: As a coach you probably don't want Youzhny to play against Thailand? It holds a certain risk of aggrevating the injury, and it's unadvisable to change from one surface to another too often....
"Not neccessarily. Davis Cup matches always give a visible advantage. In addition, mikhail is one of those who can switch from hrd surface to clay and then to synthetic courts in a relatively short period of time. But you are right: it'll be harder for him to do here in Moscow, having to run a lot more.

Question: what are your expectation for the end of the season?
"we are planning to play in 5 tournaments, including Moscow and St. Petersbourg. But I'm not going to predict anything. That's unpractical.

Shortly after the Press Conference Nikolai Davydenko left the complex, but our correspondent was able to speak with his brother Eduad, acting as coach.
Question: How serius is the injury, which forced Nikolai to retire from doubles tournament in Bukharest?
"There's nothing serius. He simply has too tired from playing a number of American Series tournaments. Even in US Open he had to play a number of 5 set matches, whcih couldn't pass without leaving a sign.

KAFELNIKOV IS CLOSE BY
Marat Safin left towards the tennis courts right after the short conversation with the press. He was paired by the stand-by Russian player igor Kunitsin, who didn't perform well in tournaments this year. They were watched by the team's coaches Sergei Leoniuk and Yevgeny Kafelnikov.

Safin played with visible enthusiasm. Answering the frequent remarks of bystanders he himself hardly made any errors, and even cheered up Kunitsin everytime the latter sent the ball wide. This can only delight, considering the fact that Safin is a player ruled by his mood. When he enters the court at easy not many can beat him.

Comming to the court Sobkin < don't know him> asked the leader of our team if the court is too soft. Safin could only shrug in answer, continuing the monotonous task of nailing the ball in the opposite court. Leonyuk, on the other hand confirmed that the court is indeed too soft.

Our guests < Thailand>, who as we know don't have any warm feelings towards clay arrived to Moscow only yesterday. their first practice in the unknown court will commence today.

THE END

Afterwards Misha added:
"I don't think the guys want to play in the small league. Therefore we will do whatever it takes to win and prove that we're worth something."
I like him more and more...

Andreev Takes First Blood for Hosts
Heavy favourites Russia took an early 1-0 lead over Thailand in their Davis Cup World Group Play-off tie after Igor Andreev crushed Paradorn Srichaphan 75 62 64 in the opening singles rubber on Friday.

Srichaphan drew the first blood breaking Andreev in the fourth game and was serving for the set at 5-3, but Russian fought back to get level on serve before going on a roll to claim the next four games. Srichaphan, urged on by a small but vocal Thai crowd at Luzhniki Sports Palace, was able to save three set points in the 12th game, but Andreev clinched the opening set 75 on his fourth opportunity.

"I think breaking him back in the ninth game was the key to the whole match," said Andreev, playing only his third Davis Cup match. I was a bit nervous at the start but then was able to calm down and that break help me to turn the match around."

Andreev handsomely paid back his captain Shamil Tarpischev, who preferred the 21-year-old over 2002 Davis Cup hero Mikhail Youzhny, by playing solid baseline tennis. The Muscovite broke Srichaphan twice in the second set to take a two-set lead as he kept up the pressure on the Thai number one.

In the final set, Srichaphan saved five break points in the third game to stay alive but Andreev finally secured a decisive break in the ninth game with a powerful forehand to wrap up the match in just over two hours.

"As I said yesterday I'm in good form and playing well at the moment," Andreev said after the match, adding that he was expecting a tougher resistance from his opponent. "He tried to vary his game a bit but I don't think he posed me any real trouble. I'd say it was a good workout for me," the Russian added calmly.

Former world number one Marat Safin was playing Thailand number two Danai Udomchoke in the second singles rubber later on Friday.

I'm sure there's others in the harem who like Michal more then Marat

like...? Michal. I thought michal was just reaping the benefits of running a harem under Marat's name?it's not really HIS harem, is it? I is

(the harem that is)

Thank gd you put that in ;)

my preference isn't all that important ;)

oh but it is, and until Marat officially opens up his Harem or chain of Harems or whatever (and sues Michal for using his name) you have to be loyal to it. Once Marat's harem opens up you can apply for a job there :D

Rejuvenated Safin vows to bring Davis Cup back to Russia
2004-09-25 17:48:20 GMT (Reuters)

By Gennady Fyodorov

MOSCOW, Sept 25 (Reuters) - A rejuvenated Marat Safin has vowed to help Russia win back the Davis Cup next year after leading the 2002 champions to an easy 3-0 victory over Thailand in a World Group playoff tie at the weekend.

The former world number one overpowered little-known Danai Udomchoke on Friday to give the home side a commanding 2-0 lead before teaming up with Mikhail Youzhny to trounce Sanchai and Sonchat Ratiwatana in Saturday's doubles.

Safin powered his country to their first Davis Cup title in 2002 along with now-retired Yevgeny Kafelnikov, but since then Russia have struggled to repeat that success.

They suffered a 5-0 drubbing by Argentina in the 2003 quarter-finals before falling to Belarus at the first hurdle earlier this year.

But Safin thinks the future is bright.

"We have a new, young team, which is capable of doing great things in the near future," the former U.S. Open champion told reporters after a 6-2 6-1 6-4 win over the Thai twin brothers.

"(Igor) Andreev is turning into a top class player, Youzhny is still young and capable of repeating his Davis Cup heroics and myself -- we have a core of a pretty good team here."

A confident Andreev, playing only his third Davis Cup match, thrashed Thai number one Paradorn Srichaphan in straight sets in Friday's opener to put Russia in control.

A NEW MAN

Russia could have been playing the United States in the Davis Cup semi-finals in Moscow instead of fighting a relegation battle with Thailand if Safin had won at least a point against Belarus in their first round tie, but he has no regrets.

"There is no point of thinking what could have been. I don't want to go back, I want to look forward," he said.

"That's why I think with a bit of luck and a favourable draw we can challenge for the title next year."

This season he has struggled for consistency after an injury-plagued 2003, but the big Russian said that winning his first title in almost two years last week in Beijing has given him a huge morale boost.

"When you don't have confidence nothing goes right on the court, even against lower-ranked players," Safin said.

"So the win in China was a great boost for my confidence. Now I feel like a new man again."

Safin, who moved into eighth place in the ATP Champions Race, said he was looking forward to the remainder of the year, hoping to qualify for the season-ending Masters Cup in Houston.

"I still have a few tournaments left. I'm flying out to Bangkok to play in the Thailand Open, so I expect a warm reception there after this win," he joked.

"I'll try to do well in all of them and hopefully go to Houston. I think I still have a chance."

Found some interview after DC... Don't know if it was posted, translated yet....

http://www.newizv.ru/news/?id_news=12147&date=2004-09-27

I'm going to skip the introduction, which talks about the victory of Russia, qualification to World Group and Safin doing his job for the team (without much enthusiasm)....
The interesting part is the schedule and the amulet on his neck...

From "Novii Izvestia":
Q: Did the Thia tennis players surprize you in any way during this tie.

Marat: Absolutely not. Everyone of them played only to their standard. They simply COULDN'T display somthing extraordinary. <I tried to be as accurate as possible in translating the tone. Atleast that's how I got it. ANd oh, I don't like Marat's recent tone in most interviews.>

Q:Watching somethat boring tennis the spectators tried to entertain themselves and was loud. Did that disturb you?

Marat: No. During the game I focus on what's going on on the court and not beside it. If I'll start paying attention to some yells you yourself will write: "Safin lost concentration again".

Q: During Wimbledon you said that you were "stuffed" with the tournament... <sorry don't have time to look for the English word he used...>

Marat: Yes, "stuffed". I don't like grass because nothing I do there works. I said what I thought and I'm ready to repeat it.

What about Davis Cup? Do you have a negative approach to it?

Marat: No, by all means.I'm always ready to play for 'our' team. Playing DC is not at all 'hopeless' for us. We have excellent players capable of playing on all surfaces.

Q:What happened in Minsk? If you had defeated Belarus there, you could have been playing not in this qualification match with the Thai, but in the final with USA...

Marat: Why do you always need to say : "if " and "if"? yes, we have made some errors in Minsk, but we lost to a strong team. You can and even should do some errors, because you learn from them. next year we would try to avoid thosesame errors and win the Davis Cup. A lot would ofcourse will depend on the draw, but we'll try.

Q:What are your plans on the near future? <Schedule!!>
Marat: Now, I'm flying to a tournament in Thailand. next will be the Kremlin Cup, Madrid, St. Petersbourg, Paris and hopefully year-end Houston Masters Tournament.

Q: Do you yourself think you'll get there?

marat: There are always chances. For this very reason I am playing right now. I'm healthy now, nothing's bothering me. My game is restored. I am confident now, because I won in beijing last week. That's important because without this confidence it's impossible to achieve anything: it is hard to risk on important points. Righ now everything is fine, so i can get even to Houston.

Q: Now that we're talking about Beijing... The Chinese are getting stronger in all sports, tennis included...; did you like how the tournament was organized?

Marat: Absolutely. It's interesting that the tournament has no sponsors, as the tournament is funded by the Sorts Ministry. In 80 days they built a studium for around 15 thousand people. A lot of people are around, but everything is well organized- everyone is doing his job. The spectators might not feel every finesse situation, but certainly understands tennis. It is a fine tournament. Got this talisman (Shows an amulet on the neck))- it helped me to win.

Q: where did you get it?

Mart: Found it someplace. Don't remember where. Don't believe me? Seriusly! I dragged it along in my bag for a long time. But I have no idea what it's for.

if he does love it as he said, hope he could come next year.

maybe it helped him to win in China but was not very effective during this year...

I see, vass. maybe our chinese are more sensitive on arrogant tone. normally, we love the modest ones more, such as jc. but as for me, I love marat's style. somewhat overconfidence.

while his necklace... I do not think he took any chinese style thing when he left beijing. even I do not think he had gone shopping here. that might be some former thing.
