Nice thread Lala :)

I've been trying to post on it for about 20 mins but keep getting database errors. Wonder if MTF will pick up its game in 2011?

Not that I know of. What makes you think he change racquet?
Anyway, just saw Davodus' practice pics from Brisbane, he's still using Head, at least at practice.

Gilles number 34! One place behind Gasquet. Not sure why, but i have some sort of rivalry in my head between Simon and Gasquet...I can't wait for him to be ahead of him  I think it's because of the two strong fanbases for the french players :P

Yes, ranking up to 34th. Since this thread is about number, thought I'll do something fun. So here's the statistic summary of Gilles' titles.

8 titles he won so far
7 cities he won titles in (Marseille/Bucharest 2/Indianaopolis/Casablanca/Bangkok/Metz/Sydney)
6 different months in the year he won titles (Jan/Feb/May/July/Sept/Oct)
5 consecutive years he won at least a title (2007-2011) in 5 continents (Europe/Africa/N.A./Asia/Australia)
4th among French for most titles (Noah 23/Forget 11/Leconte 9)
3 different surfaces (indoor hard/outdoor hard/clay)
2 titles since he elevated his status to papa Simon (Baby Timothee is 4 months old)
1 set lost among all 8 finals he won (lost 1st set in 07 Bucharest, all other wins in straight sets)
0 set lost on his way to 2 of his titles (Marseille 07/Sydney 11)

I had that baby daddy stat stuck in my mind the moment he won, so I didn't even try to think about other stat for the number 2 when I wrote the list. But this straight sets win probably is more relevant. :D

You could make a stat with 0 sets lost on his way to 2 titles. Not really how it's meant to be, but then both stats are in there. ;)

I sure was, but I'm happy with the way how Gilles handles it. Like he said, Timothee has a very good mother who takes care of him, because his father is far away (:awww: ), so :worship: :worship: :worship: Carine! If I ever see her at a tournament, I will thank her for being so amazing. :D I know it must be difficult for her to do it without him and of course for Gilles to leave her and his baby behind. Can you tell her that I also think she's amazing? When Gilles said Carine didn't want to go to Metz because she was worried the baby will keep Gilles up at nite and that may affect him in the tournament, I thought how great she is. not to mention his handsomeness and his lack of self-aware of his own look. I especially loves that he pulls all kind of faces and often stuck his tongues out during matches. Gilles stays at 34 this week. He will play Rotterdam next week. Although he has no points to defend in Feb, to gain any point is not exactly easy. For all 3 tournaments (Rotterdam, Marseille and Dubai), he will need to get to SF to start gaining pt. Well, we'll see what happens then. Hoping for good draws *finger-crossed*.

Silver.
02-01-2011, 04:04 PM
Hmm, i thought i was finally getting how the points system worked, but now i'm confused. Why can't Gilles gain points until a SF?

aloniv
02-01-2011, 05:14 PM
Actually Rotterdam is a 500, so with a QF Gilles will gain 15 points (Sunrise will be deleted from his ranking).

lalaland
02-01-2011, 06:17 PM
That's right, I forgot that he can count 4 ATP500. In fact, I'm a bit confused about how the smaller tournament is going to be counted now that he's a non-commitment player. But I'm assuming that unless he's missing any slams/ATP 1000, otherwise, if he plays all his slams and ATP 1000, then the points from slams/1000 will all be counted regardless, even if he gains more pts from smaller events. That way, the only restriction that won't be enforced on him is that he doesn't need to meet the ATP500 requirement, but does he still get zero pointer (which I kinda think that only applies to commitment player, is that correct?). Well, anyway, I have many questions regarding the ranking system. But I'll try to be patient and let it play out along the way.

Rotterdam draw:

(7)LJUBICIC, Ivan CRO v STAKHOVSKY, Sergiy UKR
QUALIFIER v SIMON, Gilles FRA
MAYER, Florian GER v LOPEZ, Feliciano ESP
BAGHDATIS, Marcos CYP v (2) MURRAY, Andy GBR

Anyone else think this is quite a good draw? The only major difficulty would be Murray and I think he will be tired after the AO run :) he may even be knocked out before the quarters.

Gilles ends this week at 33. Dubai is the last week to jock for seeding position for IW. My brief calculation is that he will start at 31 next week but who know if he will stay there though. Hopefully, he will manage a seeding at IW, then he will at least be safely away from Youzhny until at least R4 ;) (that somehow feels more perilous than meeting top 8 in R3 :p).

Allez Gilles. How about gain some pts in Dubai ;).

Ferrero has withdrawn from IW and Miami, so he will be more than probably seed

lalaland

Sadly, Ferrero ranked lower than Gilles, so he has no seeding position to give up in IW. This week, Ferrero is ranked 34, next week, he'll be out of top 40.

lalaland
02-23-2011, 06:18 PM
With the win today, he finally managed to add pts and now I'm quite sure he's safe to get a seeding for IW. I didn't really consider Davis Cup's pts and if and how it will affect, I just assume it's not gonna affect much.

Btw, he's on Casablanca's entry list, so he will start his clay season first week of April right after Miami. I also expect he will be in Monte Carlo although I'll wait for entry list to confirm. Which means, he plays since Rotterdam, every single week until mid April :rolleyes:. But IW and Miami are 2 weeks tournament which doesn't seem as demanding.

Gael has withdrawn from Indian Wells, so he is now 29th seed, because he will be ranked 30 this week. Also Ljubo and Tsonga are not sur e to enter so he might be 27th seed. Also in Miami, if Ljubo doesnt get to SF or better in IW, he will gain a position on the ranking, plus that he doesnt defend points in Indy and Miami, So lala, do he has to defend points on Sunrise¿

No, his Sunrise pts has already been replaced by Dubai's pts.

32 to 25 seeds is the same, will get 1-8 in 3rd round. As for Miami, we'll have to see what happened in IW to determine if he will gain position or not, that's always a chance other below him may put up good performance to surpass him. So we should wait. The good news is, every match he wins in the next 5 ATP 1000 (IW, Mia, MC if he enters, Rome and Madrid), plus RG will gain him points. I think his goal for RG should be 16th seed, it's very achievable. Then again, on clay, for him, I have no idea what to expect.

I actually only know how to calculate the committed player. Like I was looking at Golubev's ranking pts and can't understand why they don't count more than 4 ATP500 events for him since he's not a committed player either. Oh well, I hope I don't need to bother to do that calculation for Gilles, as long as Gilles performed like a top 30 and gets pts on bigger events, then I don't have to bother.

He is actually off pace compares to his 2009 results. He has 810 pts by end of Mia that year. Granted, he was top 8 and had easier draws then so it's understandable that the path is more difficult this year. Just hope he gets to 16 by RG, if not, to be seeded 17-24 in a slam is still not bad, at least no top 8 until R16.

BTW, I'm glad you guys like this thread, I for sure have fun updating it every tournament. :)

__________
P.S. few days later, figured out that the max number of ATP500 to be counted is 4 for everyone (committed or not), hence...mystery solved.

Kezzi
04-06-2011, 08:19 PM
I don't even know what committed player means, so let alone I know how to calculate the rank. :tape: :p

lalaland
04-06-2011, 08:27 PM
Here's the rule to explain the "committed":

In 2011, any player who finished in the 2010 year-end Top 30 will be required to compete in four Grand Slam tournaments and eight ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments. In addition, the Best 4 ATP World Tour 500 and Best 2 other events (ATP World Tour 250 and Challengers) will be counted towards a player's ranking. All direct acceptance players at the time of the entry deadline who do not play will receive a 0-pointer in their ranking.

So Top 30 are committed by ATP to play certain tournaments and got penalized if they don't.

Kezzi
04-06-2011, 08:36 PM
Thanks, I think I get it now. :) And what happens to this rule when they are injured? I mean, it's not fair to penalize them if they are not able to play for good reasons...

lalaland
04-06-2011, 08:47 PM
They got 0 point for the slams and ATP1000 no matter what if they don't play for whatever reason. As for ATP500, if they are injured for more than 30 days (or show up for promotions even if you can't play), then they don't get penalized.

Kezzi

It must be me, but how's that a penalty?
If you don't play, you don't earn points imo, doesn't really matter if you're top 30 or not. Or am I being too logical here?
I thought they'd get an extra penalty for not playing those tournaments.

lalaland
04-06-2011, 10:42 PM
Top 30 are required to play at least 4 ATP500 level each year. So if like Murray who didn't show up at Dubai, and with no apparent injury (except his wounded psyche), he got a zero-pointer for Dubai, that will stick for 1 year. So if he played another 4 ATP500 and won them all 4 at 500 pts per pop, they will count 3X500 + 0 instead of 4X500. So that's where the penalty hurts. So, the penalty, only occurs at the ATP 500 levels. There was supposed to be extra penalty too, like if you miss a ATP 1000, then they don't let you play another ATP 1000, or sth like that (not 100% sure about this rule), but it was never implemented, cos it makes no sense anyway to make players sit out for mandatory event.

The ranking system, is very complicated, which kinda makes it interesting. But I mostly just read the ranking thread to understand how things work, and the FAQ on ATP website. I think the likes of Julio and other experts read the rule book, I admire their dedications.

Kezzi
04-06-2011, 10:49 PM

Small question about the rankings points. I was looking at Judio's thread and currently Gilles is on 1475 points. He has to get to the final here to get points, so he is defending 90 points from last year if i understand correctly. SO... if he gets to the final and gets 90 do his points go up to 1565 or stay the same? I may be over-complicating things here...

Where can I can the rankings from the start of the year?

Post 1 of this thread

Gilles is ranked 16th comes next monday, confirmed. Good job. Half of the season gone and I think he achieved his first goal of getting back to good seeding position for the slam. I did a very rough calculation for Wimby's ranking, googled the formula and it said:

1)ADD 100% points earned for ALL grass court tournaments in the past 12 months.
2)ADD 75% points earned for BEST grass court tournament in the 12 months before that.

So Gilles' getting pretty good bonus pts for his R3 showing in last year's Wimby plus his QF in Eastbourne, plus his 2009 R4 Wimby showing. Based on my calculation, he'll move up in the seeding chart. But of course, others will still have chances next week to grab more pts and bonus pts. But I think it's very safe to say that he will for sure be in the 9-16th blanket to avoid top 8 in R3.

I updated his schedule up to the week of Cincy. Sadly, he's not going to Washington this year. I was hoping he will go cos several ppl here attended Washington last year and gave us wonderful reports of Gilles' matches, plus we have great coverages for that tournament. However, I'm delighted that he finally comes to some senses and take two consecutive weeks off  . Since he pretty much bombed out Hamburg first round every year :p, he can have a long rest before the very grueling US hard court season ;).

I don't think I'll be able to go to Washington this year, so I'm not too disappointed.

06-28-2011, 12:56 AM
I don't understand his scheduling sometimes. Why is he playing two claycourt tournaments this summer and only two hardcourt tournaments? I think he's a better hardcourt player and those early hardcourt draws generally tend to be rather weak. I'm guessing it's because he doesn't want to be in the states for that long but I still think he's losing out on opportunities to get rhythm on the hardcourts and gain some easy points.

lalaland
06-28-2011, 01:25 AM
I'm guessing it's because he doesn't want to be in the states for that long

Bingo. That's the reason he gave when he was asked in Cincy 09 why he didn't come to defend his Indianapolis title.

I was really hoping that he will enter Washington, but it's not to be. Then again, I can totally understand, especially this year (being a dad now).

That 2 clay tourneys in Germany always puzzled me, he never plays well in them, yet he keeps going. The only reason I can imagine is that he likes Germany ;).

On next week rank, he will drop to 19, overtaken by Jo great run to SF, and because Youzhny defended R1 points(10) and advanced to R4(180). On the Race, i did some calculations and he is 15th, tied with Andy Roddick

lalaland

07-01-2011, 07:57 PM
yeah sorry, on ranking he is 18:o, but i'm sure he is 15 on the Race, Horatio forgot to count 20 points, from Marseille R16. He says he has 1.190 and he has 1210.

lalaland
07-01-2011, 11:56 PM
it is 1210 if you count all tournaments he already played this year. Horacio counted only 3 ATP250, which is the usual maximum number of ATP250 tournaments that a Top 30 player is allowed to count, hence, he left out Marseille with only 1190. Although Gilles isn't a Top 30 last year so technically, he can count more than 3 ATP250, but that's only if his 4th and onward's ATP250 is better than his result in bigger tournaments. At this point, I suppose you can count Marseille's 20 points for him, but at the end, that 20 pts will not be counted unless his future ATP500s (which he should at least play 2 more) has less pts than Marseille. So counting the Marseille or not really depends on the result of the future. I think Horacio is expecting that Gilles's next 2 ATP500 results will be more than 20pts, that's why he excludes Marseille. But I guess you can also count it for now until Marseille gets replace by a better performance in the future.

ok, I didn't really ask Horacio how he counts these pts, I'm just assuming that's what he does, because that's how I do my own set of calculation.

After Hamburg, Gilles is now 11th on both the Ranking and the Race.

Very happy with his progress this year, from 41 to 11, not too bad. In fact, quite ahead of my expectation if I may add. Now he's knocking on the door of Top 10 again. But getting there won't be easy. He's not going to Washington, and the field there is so so, which means a lot of opportunities for those who's going. I think Roddick will most definitely pick up good amount of points to past him, and then Troicki and Melzer. But anyway, I don't expect getting to Top 10 would be easy, he will have to prove himself again in Montreal and Cincy. Hard court season is here, his best surface. With the new found confidence, I cannot wait to see how he'll do in the next few months. London is in sight, I think his goal now should at least be to try to get a spot to London. I hope he will manage. Good luck for the rest of the season, Gilles.

While we're on the topic of the race...i'm confused. Why is the table on live-tennis.eu different to the one in GM, and which one is correct?

First one in GM looks like this:

01 Novak Djokovic (SRB) 9470 (--) (--)
02 Rafael Nadal (ESP) 7635 (45) (--)
03 Roger Federer (SUI) 4180 (--) (--)
04 Andy Murray (GBR) 3720 (--) (--)
05 David Ferrer (ESP) 3330 (150) (80)
06 Robin Soderling (SWE) 2370 (250) (--)
07 Nicolas Almagro (ESP) 2000 (250)(180)
08 Tomas Berdych (CZE) 1810 (90) (90)
-----------------------------------------------------------
09 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA) 1720 (45) (--)
10 Juan Martin Del Potro (ARG) 1705 (--)
-----------------------------------------------------------
11 Gilles Simon (FRA) 1650 (45)

Second one I found is on live-tennis.eu:

1 Novak Djokovic SRB 9695 - - - - -
2 Rafael Nadal ESP 7635 - - - - -
World Tour Finals Qualification Cut 5260
3 Roger Federer SUI 4180 - - - - -
4 Andy Murray GBR 3720 - - - - -
5 David Ferrer ESP 3330 - - - - -
6 Robin Soderling SWE 2120 - - - - -
7 Tomas Berdych CZE 1760 - - - - -
8 Nicolas Almagro ESP 1750 - Gstaad R16 - 1750 1750
9 Gilles Simon FRA 1710 - - - - -
10 Juan Martin Del Potro ARG 1705 - Los Angeles R16 - 1750 1955
11 Jo Wilfried Tsonga FRA 1675 - - - - -

Silver, it's just a different way of calculation.

If you know the requirements, 4 slams, 8 ATP1000, 4 ATP500 and 2 ATP250 for the top 30. And one can replace a ATP500 result with a ATP250 if you meet certain criteria. Technically, Gilles is not Top 30 last season, so he can probably count more ATP250s pts if they are better than ATP500s, fortunately, he performs much better in ATP500 then 250 thus far.

Horatio's chart, he counts 3 ATP500 (MC 90, Dubai 90, Hamburg 500) and 3 ATP250 (Estoril 45, Casablanca 45, Sydney 250). So it adds up to 1650. Marseilles 20 pts and Davis Cup 40 pts were being left out, bcos those pts will not be counted anyway at the end of the year.

I assumed the others list that has him in 1710 is that they counted all tournaments that he had played so far this year. And when he has accumulated more tournaments then they can be counted, the other charts will begin to align with Horatio's.

Nope, he didn't sign up for it.
Since he plays Davis Cup the week after USO, or probably will just go sit at the bench. So I think the Metz's week is travel week to Asia for Bangkok. I think he meant to defend Bangkok last year but couldn't. He probably is playing this year to make up for it. I'm a little confused, what sort of tournament is this, not the name but the type? Isn't the Interclub already over and his club lost?
Yes, Gilles' Club lost the interclubs.

TC Paris - Villa Primrose : 0-4

Simple n°1 : Michaël Llodra (Primrose) b. Gilles Simon (TCP) 6/3, 5/7, 6/4
Simple n°2 : Jérémy Chardy (Primrose) b. Julien Benneteau (TCP) 6/4, 7/5
Simple n°3 : Steve Darcis (Primrose) b. Marc Gicquel (TCP) 4/6, 7/5, 6/3
Simple n°4 : Benoît Paire (Primrose) b. Marco Chiudinelli (TCP) 6/4, 6/4

As Primrose had won all four singles, the doubles became obsolete.

The Open de Caen is normally a tourney for lower ranked French players and even amateurs, but as it happened in the past, the French elite or part of it sometimes also takes part. This year the tournament director was particularly lucky as he got Richard, Gilles, Llodra and Clément. So it was a strange mixture of a more or less amateurish tournament, with Llodra and Clément entering at the QF stages, while Richard and Gilles only entered at SF level.

My guess is that they are at different stages of their prep season and want some match-play in between to see where they stand. So whatever the outcome, I would not take the results too seriously.

So I had the wrong idea stuck in my head. Don't even know where I got that, maybe it's just because the bundesliga is much easier to follow. There's a lot more info that I can actually read and understand. :p

Yes, there is a website http://www.masterstenisbilbao.es/, with a lot of info. Bad thing for you is that the website info is in Spanish. Also they have a FB with photos and updates, but again it is in Spaniah

Gilles defeated Almagro, #10 in the world, 75 61 in 1h. 30m. It's his third Top-25 win in a row, after the ones against Gasquet & Verdasco. He has an 8-1 record since the end of the ATP season, today i watched bits and pieces of his match and he was playing really good.

Congrats to Gilles, for winning, having to wear that winner hat notwithstanding. Well, he worked hard during off-season, which is good, I guess that's what he feels he needs to move forward.

Now, go take some rest and enjoy the holidays, Gilles.
He probably has only a week to rest, and will be hopping on a plane to Downunder on his birthday or even before. Hope he'll be fresh enough for the new season.
