Hey, guys--

I just scanned the chat thread (hmm, they seem to be popping up everywhere ;)) to make sure I wouldn't be duplicating the idea here, but I thought it'd be nice to have a thread somewhere for all of the Swiss players. And what better place than to steal a corner of Rogi's forum? I hope you don't mind :o

I like Roger, but I like Michel Kratochvil more . . . I mean, not that you could tell from any of the other threads I've posted in, LOL ;) And I don't know much about the other boys (and girls) who play under the Swiss flag.

I'm looking forward to the reports from DC and Basel on all the boys :) Thanks for volunteering, guys! :)

HI TH

Well you're welcome to open your swiss topic in here ;).

So you like to know more about our siwss guys.
Well you know Michel so I don't have to tell you anything about him. You even might know more than I do anyways.

Interresting thing about George Bastel is that he's actually born in the US. Marc Rosset (not really my fave.) still surprises me. Ivo Heuberger needs that one big win for his breakthrough and he's got to look after his shoulder who's bothering him every now and then.

Yves Allegro trains in Germany. His best results he had on grass. (Rosmalen that is.)

I believe also Marco Chiudinelli (he played in Toronto this year - with Roger he was also in the hockey team - he beat Cederic Piolin at the qualies for the US Open but lost in the next round.) trains outside of Switzerland as there aren't many good training centers around here. Only one that comes to mind is the one in Magglingen clouse to Biel. (Yes that's where Roger used to train and sometimes still uses the site when he's in Switzerland.)

Roman Valent hasn't made the step to the big ones yet after he won Wimby as a junior last year. Guess it takes him longer to get back after he had to deal with the "Pfeifferschedrüsenfieber".

When I'm not mistaken Stephan Bohli is training in a center in Paris. Haven't got a clue what Michael Lammer is up to.

Sorry not really much of good info from me.

but still enough for a huge

HOOOOPPPPP SCHWIIIIIZZZZZ!! ;)

Hackie,

Brilliant idea to start one here, quite appropriate really, 'cuz Rogi's a good friend to all the Swiss players. What with the DC happening this weekend in Morocco, we will surely have a lot of things to write about here...

So now i should start stalking Krati here in Bern or at his parent's tennis center and get an autograph or interview for you or something? ;) j/k

and as we are talking about the other Swiss players, the Swiss football boyz would be in this category too. ;) They kicked ass last night in their match against Moscow Spartak. This is Rogi's home team, the FC Basel. But it's a great pleasure to all the Swiss.

FC BASEL OVERPOWER MOSCOW SPARTAK

Hakan Yakin’s goal in the 50th minute put FC Basel on the path to victory in Basel’s debut in the Champions League group stage.

Five minutes later, Julio Hernan Rossi dribbled around the Spartak defence to get a clear shot past 'keeper Alexander Cherchesov.

With the Muscovites missing their injured captain, Yegor Titov, Basel dominated much of the match and had a number of near misses.

First scare

Rossi gave Spartak its first scare in the 15th minute with a header that went into the net past Cherchesov, but the Argentine player was ruled offside.

In the 23rd minute, Murat Yakin headed against the post from a corner. Thirty seconds later his younger brother, Hakan, had his first opportunity, heading the ball just wide of the goal.

Hakan was also on target with a bicycle kick in the 43rd minute, but Cherchesov caught it. And Rossi narrowly missed with a header that bounced off the crossbar in the 70th minute.

Spartak were also forced to cope with the news that Titov faces between one and four months more on the sidelines with a renewed injury to his knee.

Unhappy history

The Russian team have an unhappy history away from home in the Champions League and this was their eighth successive away defeat in the competition.

Last season the Russians were eliminated in the first round of the competition, finishing behind Bayern Munich, Sparta Prague and Feyenoord.

Shock win over Celtic

Basel made sure of their place in the Champions League opening round after shocking Scottish champions Celtic in the qualifiers.

The team came back from a 3-1 deficit after the first leg in Glasgow, to win the second leg 2-0 in Basel.

Entry into the Champions League is likely to give a welcome boost to the FC Basel coffers, which have been hard-stretched in particular by the building of the club’s new stadium.

The Swiss side could earn up to SFr10 million ($6.7 million) – even if they lose all their games – thanks to contributions from the competition organiser, UEFA, along with money from the Champion’s League marketing pool and ticket sales.

If the club continues to upset some of Europe’ biggest sporting names, the financial rewards could be even greater.

LOL, no, you don't have to go through all that trouble. The fact that I don't see him or hear about him much adds to my admiration of him ;)

But, if you want to, far be it from me to stop you :D

Doris, thanks for the info. I've only even heard of the guys playing for the DC team that you mentioned, nothing about juniors. So you did have some good info :) When Bastl defeated Sampras at Wimbly, we learned his life story more or less. "Breakfast with Jim Courier" was awkward but interesting.

Welcome TH!

I'm a diehard Rogi fan as you can see -- you can check out my images from TMS Toronto this summer -- there's one of Rogi w Chiudinelli at the hockey game -- so much fun to watch them having fun! [images in Mad... thread]

Also, thanks to Doris for Swiss info -- I have the SMASH mag stuff on the Juniors but it's in GERMAN! [Doris and Mrs. B. are kind enough to indulge me for translations of Swiss articles.]

Thanks to Mrs. B. for FC Basel report!! [my Spanish teams Real Madrid (Juanqui's team) and Valencia (dear to my heart as it's the place where Juanqui is from and where I lived/studied) also won!]

Yep, here we can all cheer for and support the SWISS BOYS!

See you around the boards! :)

It was so funny, in that "funny awkward" way. I mean, basically, Jim went over and had a muffin with George, who told him about his plumbing problems. Then he kicked Jim out :D

I think I taped it, so when I get a chance I'll put up a transcript.

Oops, sorry about that!! What was your question in another thread? You didn't understand sthm in my list?? Was it re: BEACH BOY??? Rogi loves the beach -- Miami, Sydney, Durban, Maldives (more secluded and private for Rogi and his love) you name it, he loves it! He likes to relax in the warm water and the sand... and we'd love to watch him relax...

you have to check out a Swiss mag called

SPORTMAGAZIN

check the 05/02 may 2002 issue online -- there s/be a cover photo of him running along some (Miami?) beach -- looking mighty hot! it's all in Deutsch though

Rogi won the first set 6-3.

I was afraid of that when I saw he was up first against Younes :fiery::fiery: (who now gets a double fiery for defeating two of my boys). Younes is really tough on clay. REALLY tough.

Mrs. B

Roger won the second set 6-2.

he keeps feeding the Arazi backhand which is weak...

at 4-1, 30-15, RF serving, Arazi makes a drop shop, Roger gets it, but Arazi returns it back with a lob and Rogi makes an overhead backhand smash which takes Arazi by surprise and as Arazi returns it back it goes to the net! (nice shot ;)

Yeah, i think those are the shorter shorts that you're talking about...

Good to see about 30 Swiss cheerers, maybe more, wearing red t shirts with the big white cross. A guy with a red traditional shirt shaking that big cowbell! So Swiss. :)

yes, Arazi was not on fire. The tactic with the backhand worked pretty well cuz he really made errors there. But today Rogi was stronger, his body language was of total confidence...

Switzerland takes 2-1 lead over Morocco

Switzerland has taken a 2-1 lead in over Morocco in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group Qualifying Round tie in Casablanca after victory to George Bastl and Roger Federer over Karim Alami and El Aynaoui 64 61 64 earlier today.

Fresh from his strong singles victory over Hisham Arazi yesterday, it was Federer who again dictated events on court. He teamed well with Bastl and excelled on the most important points. The Moroccan team of El Aynaoui and Alami appeared nervous at the start of the match, despite the advantage of playing at home.

in the third set, same pattern, Rogi breaking Younes in the second and fourth game. At 1-1, 15-30, Rogi returns a serve which goes to the outer part of the net, you think it's out, but lands just before the baseline at the corner. He smiles...

at 3-1 he hits his classic backhand down the line, Younes at the net applauding with his racket.

RogiFan,

Rogi was cool today. Younes had the jitters, but Rogi definitely dominated the whole game. Anayoui made some good strong forehands to the corners of the baselines, but Rogi also made some nice overhead backhand smash...sweet! ;) and of course, his forehand was also strong today, and that good ol' backhand down the line, and slicing them for variation, altho some slices went to the net. His first serve percentage wasn't also very high, maybe only 54% to Younes' 77% or something. But overall, a very big win indeed. For Rogi, for PC, and for the Swiss people...btw, he opens the first point of the match on his serve---an ace. :) how promising can that get?

Basler läckerli are some kind of biscuits, hard to bite on but they soften in your mouth and the flavors come out, and it's a specialty from Basel. Perhaps Doris can explain this better...

well, you're only allowed one bottle of champagne from the duty free, but no worries, you can buy them here too.

Swiss Team breaks through

On the third day of the Davis Cup tie Switzerland - Morocco Roger Federer won the third point for Switzerland. With an outstanding performance his opponent Younes El Aynaoui didn’t even seem to get a chance to breathe during the game. With 6-3, 6-2 and 6-1 he assured Switzerland’s position in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas world group.

“When I played for the match I kept seeing Peter Carter’s face in my mind” said Federer at the subsequent press conference. He dedicated his victory to his team manager and friend, who passed away in an accident on August 1st.

Therefore Switzerland won also the third tie with Morocco. Already in 1982 and in 1992 the Swiss had been triumphant - in those cases winning 5:0 Even on the last of the three days of the meeting there seemed to be a lack of atmosphere and interest in the Complexe Al Amal. The stadium was far from being full, only about half of the places

Hi everyone, Mrs. B, Rogifan, ILR, Mrs. G, Doris, Nina! :)

Thanks Mrs. B and RF for the pics! :)

Its so great to see Rogi smiling and looking happy again. He really deserves this happiness and the whole Swiss team does, too. Its just so wonderful that he won all his matches! I cant believe it. I mean, I can believe it, cause its our Rogi :)

And the way he won them, all in straight sets. Its strangely fabulous. And how the scores for his singles matches are the same. I wonder if thats a first? What a weekend its been. Love the Swiss! :) :hearts:

Er, no he didn't . . . he lost

What's going on with him?!?! I don't know. He breaks my heart sometimes. I always feel bad when it's his two losses that make the scoreline so tight . . .
But the important thing is, Switzerland won, for themselves and for Peter. Rogi  for saying he kept seeing Peter's face during his last singles match.

So, I'm in for the celebration!! Even if I still feel guilty :o I wonder if Michel feels guilty, too . . .

He lost???? I read it wrong then. Sorry, Hackie. awww, poor Krati. I remember Patty Schnyder breaking down into tears when they lost their FC match against (i forgot who) feeling so guilty that she gave the match away...hope Krati doesn't do a Patty. But it's not his fault, he tried his best and it wasn't his weekend. Still, they won, and that's that. I'm sure MK's time to shine again will come sooner than you'll expect it...
So let's have a drink on that... http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/cheers.gif

 Well, he didn't cry on the court, I don't think, but then he doesn't really strike me as the type to do something like that. But he might cry in private :o

Indeed, the Swiss have reclaimed their spot in the World Group and have kept their record against Morocco undefeated. I'll feel better about it tomorrow, never fear. :)

Casablanca. BaZ.

Doris:

I think this is the article [forgive me for posting here]:

Davis Cup. Barrage Weltgruppe/Kontinentalzone.
In Casablanca (Sand). Marokko - Schweiz 1:2. - Younes El Ayanoui s. Michel Kratochvil 7:5, 6:2, 6:2. Hicham Arazi u. Roger Federer 3:6, 2:6, 1:6. El Aynaoui/Karim Alami u. Roger Federer/George Bastl 4:6, 1:6, 4:6.

Federer outstanding

The Swiss-Davis-Cup-Team stays thanks to Roger Federer in the worldgroup. The basilean added 3 points to the 3:2 win over morroco in the relagation round.

92 min. against Hicham Arazi, 105 in the double with George Bastl agains Karim Alami/Younes El Aynaoui, 103 agains El Aynaoui: The Federer Express rolled during these 3 days in Casablanca with an increadable high speed through the Al-Amal-Stadion and took care of, that Switzerland was able to keep her belowings to the worldgroup since 1995. For the seccond time after his "one-man-show" in February 2001 agaist the USA Federer has a blank bilanz after a Davis Cup meeting with 3 wins.

Success for the Duo Federer/Bastl
The basis for the successfull trip to north africa Federer has laid together with Bastl on Saturday. The two harmonised during the 6:4 6:1 6:4 at their first Davis-Cup show up together from the beginning. Bastl impressed at his doubles debut with his constant play, Federer took care of the creative part.

A "problem child" is still Michel Kratochvil. The Berner was once again not able to play his best at the important moments. Kratochvil himself still sees him as clear Nr. 2 in the team and due to the lack of alternatives it might (for the moment) remain like that. From a player who's meanwhile under the top 40, likewise results can be expected also in Davis Cup. At the last, meaningless singles match Kratochvil wasn't able to show signs of a change. He lost to Mounir El Aarej, who's only at Nr. 455 in the ranking and played at the place of Hicham Arazi with 2:6 3.6.

Will Lundgren stay?
At the search for a new teamboss there could be a positive sign in sight. Peter Lundgren, wo's taken over Peter Carters place only for this match against morocco, gave signs that he might change his mind. "I love the Davis Cup. But wether I'm going to continue or not is related to my family first. For that I have to speak with them as also with the players and the section president." said the swede. For President Christine Ungricht this "trendchange" didn't come unexpected. "I knew that Peter kept/keeps the back door open."

Thank you Doris! What a darling! You s/be getting paid for your translation services!

I hope Micha doesn't feel too badly after his 2 losses! Pressure is an ugly thing that affects most players, incl. our Rogi. I don't know how you get past it -- winning is the way but how to achieve it when you're not confident... tough! Hopefully w more experience he'll get used to the pressure.

Mrs. B.:

Have you ordered your Rogi calendar yet? I wonder if I s/do it now or after my vac in a couple of wks... to pay in Euros or Swiss francs, that is the question... [it's expensive alright, better be worth it! -- but anything Rogi is!]

Here's an other translation from a blick article.

Will Roger make it under the best 8?

Schanghai - Last minute panic in the tennis circuit. The final fight for the master-Cup places has started.

Only the 8 best of the world are allowed to participate at the last highlight of the tennis season of the year. Lleyton Hewitt and Andre Agassi US-Open finalist are first to qualify for the Masters-Cup-Tournament in Schanghai (12. - 17. November). In the middle of the fight for the last places: Roger Federer.

The at the present best Swiss Tennis Player, has to put up a really good run, when the trip to China shall come true. At the inofficial Singles World Championship the seven first placed at the champions race and the best placed winner of one of the last 4 grand slams - at the moment that would be Pete Sampras - are allowed to take part. At the moment Roger Federer takes the 10 position in the Champions Race.

Right now the Thommy Haas (Ger) and Andy Roddick stand infront of the sun of the Münchensteiner. And he'll have to surpass one of the 3 spaniards Juan-Carlos Ferrero, Albert Costa and Carlos Moya. All three of them share the 5th place with a lead of 37 points of Roger.

The fight will be decided at the last two Master Series Events in Madrid and Paris-Percy. When Roger Federer reaches at one of these events the final, he'll get 70 points for a semifinal 45. Not an impossible task when Roger will be able to keep his level like he showed at the Davis Cup in Morocco.

Goooo Roger goooo!!!

:sad::sad: I was here when it happened, and I was . But I had to rush off to class so I couldn't post it everywhere.

Michel plays in Vienna next week, where he again has points to defend (this time, only quarterfinals, though). I think he's going to drop out of the Top 50 since he lost in the first round and had finals points to defend. This makes me very sad and angry. I KNOW he can play better than this, so what the hell happened?!?!?!

LOL, maybe you can ask him next time you see him. I can just see it now . . .

Hahah, you didn't need to level off my "Go Jarkko", I'm probably one of ten people in the world who cheers for him. Rogi has tons of fans.

They must have been doing their job because Rogi won quite nicely. It's good to see him back, but I'm still  about Jarkko.

Well, Michel continues to slump, badly, with another first round loss :( Hopefully he will take some tips from Rogi and bring himself out of it soon!

Lily
10-08-2002, 04:36 AM
TH, I know how you feel. When Rogi was going thru his slump this summer, I was feeling everything at once...sadness, anger, confusion. It just didnt make sense. I was so desperate at one point, in a post here I was singing Kumbaya and roasting marshmellows. yes, it got that bad. Losing 1st rd of the French and Wimby when a lot of people thinking he could go all the way. It was a truly terrible time. But all throughout that time I kept staying positive and kept supporting him and said win or lose I will always be there. Because thats what you gotta do when you believe in a player so much. Thats when they need you the most, when theyre not doing well.

I saw Michel play Tim at Wimby and he had that match. He was only 4 games away and then he started throwing in df's. He had played so well. And I also remember him beating Andre at IW. He's a great player and I guess all great players must go thru a slump at some point. But as us Rogi fans know, they do eventually come out of it. It may take a while, but you have to have faith. :)

Doris Loeffel
10-08-2002, 06:52 AM
It's really hard. Just after Roger seams to have overcome his patch it's now Michel who has it. Wish I could help. But the only person who can help Michel is Michel itself. Darn so close and still on the loosing side.

Alllleeeezzz Michel!!! You can do better!!! (or are u saving your energy for Basel??)

LOL, well, I don't think I'll be roasting marshmellows and singing for his soul, but I got your point ;) Of course I'm not going to desert him now, I've invested too much in him to do that. I just need an outlet for my misery in the meantime. :( I also just wish I knew what was going on with him, instead of having to guess--because of course I just think the worst.

As for Wimbledon, well, that just cemented it for me. Flashes of brillance before that, but Wimbledon made me believe if he could jump that all-important first title hurdle, then he would be an excellent player. :)

Thanks for commiserating, you guys :) I hope you're right, Doris, and he's just flying low until Basel.

But enough about my problems, this isn't the "comfort TH because of Michel thread"--Marc is about to take his first-round match in Vienna!!

This is horrible in more ways than one. I read the scoring thread, what the hell happened?!?!?!? This definitely points to some breakdown in mental strength like you said, Doris  It also means his ranking is plummeting, probably out of the Top 70 now. Hackie, the picture i have is the best i've seen of him, it's a close up, huge and very clear...i'll try to have it scanned and send it to you altho i think the quality will diminish.
You know in that interview he admits that what he needs is consistency and experience...
This loss to Nico would mean that tomorrow he's probably back at the tennis center in Ostermundigen...

Did you know i almost went to Zürich today? I could have seen Kimmy & Dani play. & Lindsay. I could have gone and canceled my other appointments but i was so tired having woke up at 5 this morning to drive my old man to the train station. He went to Frankfurt on a business trip.

Aww, that sounds wonderful :) I was actually think about that today (because that interview is still on my mind) . . . I wonder if he feels like he has nothing to play for? Some people are weird like that, they need a higher goal in order to perform at their best.

Unfortunately, unless fate really does intervene, I'll never even get to see him in person. I have no reason to go to Switzerland (except him, and that's usually considered stalking :o) and I have no money to travel to whatever American tournaments he might play in. He'd have to play for a long time and be forever single before I could manage to scrape together enough money for expenses :(

So I suppose you will forever continue to tease me about it, and I'll just have to comfort myself with pictures like this:

I think he'll be okey. When he played doubles with Rogi in Gstaad he played well and he was the one prodding Rogi on. Did i mention it to you before that i took some lessons from his coach before? His name is Vojko Fetsch. Nice guy.

Well Bern is really a small town, like everybody knows everybody so in the tennis circle it is pretty small.

I mean i already played many years in Flamingo (the tennis center) and Krati was playing the local tournaments here and won them and now he's among the world's top players so people here are proud of him, and i think he's still the same nice quite guy. But i don't know him personally. Last year i saw him at Starbucks (we got one here) and he was sitting upstairs in a corner (with a chick), and he looked pretty normal and unobtrusive...

hehe, fate's little helper, eh? we'll see about that...;)

Really not the best draw for the swiss playser as they'll more or less kick themselfs out of the tournament.

Roger vs. Michel in first round and the winner might face George in round 2 (I take it that he'll beat Waske as he already beat him at the last quali round in Wimbledon.) grrrrrr....... The draw last year looked much more swiss friendly. As they werent to meet each other before the semis. Not so this year also Ivo and Marc might already meet in the quarters when they get that far that is.

Stilll Goood luck to all the swiss palywer!!

:( Poor Micha! Why does this always happen when the guy is playing at home? Last week Alex wasn't well... and Costa, of course, who is better this week, I guess, since he's in the draw.

The crowd will be divided between Rogi and Micha.

Darn it's really a shame that they have to face each other in round 1!!! GRRRRRRR that's a Riesengrosse Sch.....se. Too bad one has to loose.

 Oh.

Last year he was sick here, too :( I hope he's well enough to play tomorrow . . . poor Micha. I'll have to send him some good vibes and a little love ;)
