So I figured I'd start this thread now, even though it might be a bit early still

Gianluigi Quinzi is currently the #1 U-14 Player in Europe, and top 10 U-16
Birthday: Feb 1, 1996
Residence: Porto San Giorgio, Italy
Plays: Left handed two handed backhand

Titles
Gianluigi is currently only 14 years old, and he's undefeated in U-18 ITF events, having won 4 consecutive titles.
G5 Honduras Bowl, Sep 18 Clay
G5 Copa Coqui, Sep 25 Hard
G5 Copa Mangu, Oct 2 Hard
G5 Curacao Juniors Open, Oct 9 Hard

That was 4 titles in 4 weeks, against players up to 4 years older than him, on two different surfaces.
He is based out of Italy, but currently training at the Nick Bolleteri Tennis Academy.

This week (November 7), he is playing in his first professional tennis match, in Futures Qualifying in Mexico, and next week he will be participating in the Challenger tournament down there.

And today, as a 14 year old, he qualified for his first Futures tournament. He'll play hometown favourite and 3rd seed Cesar Ramirez in the first round.

Hopefully he can come through unlike Miccini. Italy needs a star in the mens game.

GasquetGulbis

As just a 15 year old Quinzi won a G2 Event in Uruguay, and is now competing in a G1 in Brazil, and is ranked near the top 100 of U-18 ITF boys. After the 93's drop out he would be ranked aroudn 30, but I imagine his ranking will keep going up, and he can aim to be around top 20 by next years drop

He already played a challenger last year, losing first round. But it's good experience either way.

Just hope he doesnt go down the route of losing too much too young in these matches. Think thats what happened to Miccini aside from the bad injuries too of course.

He really shouldn't be expecting to win these matches, so I hope they won't hurt him emotionally. I think he'll probably play the Junior Grandslams and then head to futures by the end of the year.

Couldn't find him on either of the draws for the Rome Challenger, or the Futures in Italy. Guess he decided not to participate.

Since the last post, Quinzi reached the Semi-Final of a G2 in Florence and a Last 16 in another G2 in Salsomaggiore. His U18 ranking is improving all the time. The kid is a big talent.

I assume his next tournament will be the Grade A Trofeo Bonfiglio which starts on the 16th May. I suppose he should get a Wild Card if he wants 1.

Yes I imagine the same. I think he'll probably be able to get quite a few wildcards, maybe even into the upcoming Grandslams. I'm hoping his schedule will be the same as last year, focus on juniors, and then try a few futures near the end of the year, maybe pick up a point or two.

Then next year, I would imagine he'll be a competitor for the Junior Grandslams, and he'll become a regular in the 2nd round of futures, and get a low senior ranking.

GasquetGulbis
05-09-2011, 06:41 AM
Very strange. Quinzi isn't playing the GA, because he's playing in the Future's tournament. He's up against the 7th seed first round.

Champion number 1
05-09-2011, 08:32 AM
The GA is next week couldn't he play that too?

Champion number 1
05-09-2011, 09:32 AM
He plays Alejandro Gonzalez of Colombia in the Italy F9 event. 22 year old still improving who is 329 in the world. Very tough opponent, good thing is he will not expect anything and even a bad loss doesnt mean much at this stage.

GasquetGulbis
05-09-2011, 03:30 PM

Yes, my mistake. He won't be playing the G1.

Smoke944
05-10-2011, 01:55 AM
Good luck to him.
I watched him on the stream when he played doubles in the challenger from a few weeks ago. He hits the ball really well as you might expect.

Smoke944
05-11-2011, 12:18 AM
He lost 6-1 1-6 3-6
I think that is a pretty good effort to take a 6-1 set against a solid player.

Champion number 1
05-11-2011, 10:14 AM
Yeah excellent to win the first set by that margin aswell. Obviously you would expect the older players extra stamina reserves and strength to kick in after that though, but still a good start to his futures this year :) By the end of the year I think he will be winning the odd match in them.

Champion number 1
05-16-2011, 11:34 AM
A really tough draw. He plays George Morgan the 18 y/0 no.6 seed from GB. Morgan reached the SF of the Austrlian Open and has been able to qualify for a few future events in GB and Italy this year so I dont expect a win for Quinzi.

Champion number 1
05-16-2011, 06:06 PM
Quinzi beat Morgan 62 64. Stunning.

Smoke944
05-16-2011, 09:05 PM
I'm pleased but not completely surprised.
Don't get me wrong, it's a great win, but I don't think Morgan is too comfortable on clay.

Champion number 1
05-16-2011, 09:58 PM
True but Morgan qualified for an Italy futures event to suggest he's not a total dud for the junior circuit.

Champion number 1
05-18-2011, 09:00 AM
Lost to Ofner 60 63. Disappointing result but getting the first win is good enough for now. I'm guessing RG juniors next possibly? Or will he skip that for this year?

Pirata.
05-26-2011, 07:03 PM
He is playing RG juniors qualies. He just won the first round.

Champion number 1
05-26-2011, 10:20 PM
How many rounds is the quali? 3?

Champion number 1
05-26-2011, 10:23 PM
He beat Ugarte (18 y/o 76 in Junior ranking) 64 64

Next round he plays Commin a Fench WildCard so good chance to qualify as I think this is the final quali round.

Champion number 1
05-28-2011, 10:42 AM
He won easy 61 61. Is he qualified or 1 more match?

GasquetGulbis
05-28-2011, 04:07 PM
He's qualified now, good result. Won't be expecting much from him this tournament, second round would be nice, but qualifying itself was good.

Champion number 1
05-28-2011, 04:57 PM
It depends on the draw really, he can probably win 1 match if he plays someone lower in the rankings.

Smoke944
05-29-2011, 02:52 PM
6-1 5-7 5-7
Played Sean Berman, junior AO finalist from last year, was down a break in the third and came back to have MP, didn't convert and was broken in the next game. Then Berman served it out. He also won 6 points more overall. Too bad....

Armless
05-29-2011, 03:27 PM
Nearly winning against a successful juniors player that is 3 years older than him. Good stuff. Looking forward to his progress later on.

GasquetGulbis
05-31-2011, 04:15 PM
I think he'll probably be a competitor for the junior grandslams next year, which will be against 94's and 95's. Hopefully he can pick up 1 or 2 professional points, and then maybe we'll be able to see a return of teenagers to the men's game.

Champion number 1
06-01-2011, 11:18 AM
Yes for the rest of the season he should play mainly junior tournaments and throw in the odd future tournament maybe around the end of the summer time and late in the year.

Looks like he is skipping Wimbledon juniors and instead will play a Grade 2 in Holland. Probably a wise choice as long as he plays well.

Champion number 1
07-01-2011, 09:56 AM
Really disappointing result for Quinzi against Simonsson in a Netherlands G2 event. Lost 61 62 in the 2nd round. Got a bye through the 1st round. Seems his form has gone off the boil a little recently, though he hadnt actually played since the end of May aswell.

Up next for Quinzi is a Morocco G2 event next week. Hopefulyl he does better there.

Smoke944
07-08-2011, 10:48 PM
Solid first week in Morocco as he made the semis in singles and won doubles.

Champion number 1
07-15-2011, 08:02 PM
Made the semis of the G1 event so far in Morocco. Impressive 2nd week and still going.

GasquetGulbis
07-16-2011, 06:45 PM
Quinzi into the final of a G1 in Morocco. If he finishes runner-up his ranking will go up to 48, but if he wins he'll be at around 38 by my calculations. If he does win he'll be the 9th highest ranked player born after 1994, in other words if he stays there, he should be top 10 once the 93s drop

Champion number 1
07-16-2011, 06:50 PM
Italy actually could have 3 top 20 players in juniors next year I think with Donati and Napolitano aswell.

Smoke944
07-16-2011, 06:51 PM
Great win, revenge for last week. Final will be tough against the number 1 seed, Sborowitz.

Champion number 1
07-17-2011, 04:58 PM
Lost winning just 1 game, but a great week anyway.

Smoke944
07-17-2011, 05:43 PM
Whoops. Sborowitz is a tough player and three years older. Great week, though.

Champion number 1
07-17-2011, 06:11 PM
I think its clear that against the players 3 years older or more, Quinzi will struggle to play more than 1 tough match in a week at the moment. Conditioning obviously comes with the older he gets, he will be able to last longer playing in weeks like this.

Playing in a G1 tournament in Colombia this week. I guess that means he is skipping the junior of the AO.

He won his first round 64 62 against a lucky loser and will face Escobar in the final 32.

Signs of a bright future. Would be fantastic to see a new italian star. But let's not hurry, he has still much to learn. Many more years to learn and probably won't be easy at all. I don't know much about tennis academies in Italy, but he surely has a big support now by the federation.

GasquetGulbis

Gianluigi seems the real deal. I'm hoping he only plays GA Junior Tournaments this year, and focuses on training and futures. If I were him I'd be hoping to be a Futures winner by the end of the year, or at least start playing some of the weaker challengers at the end of the year. He should be able to finish as Junior Number 2, I don't see him topping Luke Saville at this point, but he should be able to get a Junior Grandslam under his belt. Next year he should focus entirely on the Pro tour.

Oops, I thought futures were done for the year

Next year I think he should only play a couple grand slams but then focus solely on futures and then eventually challengers. This is just my opinion but i believe he'll experience a lot more improvement just by going against the pros. He's already physically built and matured enough to face then on pretty much equal footing.

Just some slams, nothing more. His level is already the one of a Top 400-500 player and he is still just 16, there is no sense playing junior tournaments which could affect his moral, too.

So what do we think for his season next year?
January: I don't think he'll win the Aussie Open, but maybe a place in the finals.
February-March: Futures!!! Pick up some points, because he has no points to lose.
April: Hit up those 2 challengers in Italy
May: Defend his points at Trofeo Bonfiglio, maybe a wildcard for Rome Masters Qualifying
June: Win Roland Garros
July: Not sure how his Grass game will be
August: Challengers in Italy
September: Win Junior US Open
October: Hopefully he's at the Challenger level by then
