David lost in 3 Sets to Melzer  I don't know what that does to his chances of making the year end final. The Tennis Channel that isn't all that great about accurate information said that Melzer would have to win the Tournament to get a spot while Nando would have to reach the Finals. However, the ATP site said Roddick going to the QFs knocked Melzer out! And Verdasco was defeated by Monfils so I'm sure he's out

Ferrer lost to Meltzer 76(6) 26 63. Check out the latest from the ATP site Mae. Berdych, Ferrer, and Roddick have indeed qualified for the finals. Roddick's winning officially knocked out Meltzer for the singles berth. Nando lost a really tight one to Monfils that ruined his chances. What a match that was.

So all aboard the Ferrer express to London. :drink:

David may have lost but he's going to London :woohoo:

BERDYCH, FERRER, RODDICK CLAIM LAST THREE SPOTS IN BARCLAYS ATP WORLD TOUR FINALS

No. 9 Verdasco’s loss guarantees eight-man field in London

LONDON – The last three positions in the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals have been determined on Thursday with Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, David Ferrer of Spain and Andy Roddick of the U.S. rounding out the eight-man field in London.

All three players were guaranteed a spot in the year-end championship as a result of No. 9 Fernando Verdasco losing to Gael Monfils in the third round of the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris on Thursday and by Roddick’s earlier singles win over Ernests Gulbis. Roddick, who is No. 8 in the year-to-date ATP Rankings, now has enough points to stay ahead of No. 11 Jurgen Melzer even if the Austrian wins the Paris title this week.

Berdych, Ferrer and Roddick join a blockbuster singles line-up featuring Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Robin Soderling as the world’s top eight players battle it out for the last title of the season in London.

In doubles, Lukasz Kubot and Oliver Marach became the fifth team to qualify following their win over Nicolas Almagro and David Marrero in Paris on Wednesday. The final three doubles berths will be determined this week in Paris.

Berdych, Ferrer and Roddick’s qualifications also mean that their self-portraits, created using paint-covered tennis balls, will be displayed as part of the ‘Art of Tennis’ exhibition at La Galleria Pall Mall in London until 18 November, as well as being displayed in the Fan Zone at The O2 during the tournament. Their original works of art are also being auctioned online for charity through: BarclaysATPWorldTourFinals.com/ArtofTennis. The first artwork open for bidding, Robin Soderling's self-portrait, has already attracted a top bid of more than US$1,500 in the opening days.

Berdych, 25, is the lone player making his maiden debut in the season finale. He reached his first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon in July (l. to Nadal) and is currently a personal-high No. 6 in the South African Airways 2010 ATP Rankings. In addition to a runner-up at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Miami tournament in April (l. to Roddick), Berdych was a semi-finalist at Roland Garros and quarter-finalist in seven other tournaments. Berdych will finish in the Top 10 for the first time in his career and he made the biggest jump of any player in the Top 10 from last season, climbing from No. 20.

Berdych said: "Qualifying for London is the pay off for all the hard work during the year and I'm very happy to see my name among the best eight players in the world."

Ferrer, 28, who previously qualified for the season finale three years ago when he finished No. 5, reached the title match that year in Shanghai, losing to No. 1 Roger Federer. He captured titles in Acapulco in February and in his hometown of Valencia last Sunday while reaching clay court finals in Buenos Aires in February and ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Rome in May. Last month he was a finalist in Beijing. He also won the most clay court matches (31) during the year and second-most (60) overall, behind Rafael Nadal (67).

Ferrer said: “It is great to qualify again. Last year I was watching the final on TV. I am so happy to be playing in London this year.”

Roddick, 28, who qualified for the eighth consecutive year, will be making his first appearance at The O2. Last year he qualified but had to withdraw due to a knee injury. Roddick is a three-time semi-finalist in the year-end championship. He began the season with his first title in Australia in Brisbane and three months later he captured his fifth career ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown in Miami. He is the third active titles leader with 29 on the ATP World Tour, trailing only Federer (65) and Nadal (43). Roddick has won at least one ATP title for 10 straight years and he finished in the Top 10 for the ninth consecutive year. He is the last American ATP World Tour No. 1 in 2003.

Roddick said: “I think it's a goal at the beginning of every year… It's certainly an accomplishment every year. It's an honor to qualify once and each time you realise how tough it actually is. You can't just play well for one week. It's the culmination of doing it week after week on tour.”

i was there live for his match with Melzer, sitting in the first row three feet from the sideline. and, he himself was not glad he lost... hugely impressed by his passion and his professionalism. he didn't deny kids' request to an autograph before leaving the court after he lost.

great attitude and nice to see him cementing his place in the finals at London's O2 Arena.

Thanks, Getta. That's David all over - huge respect for his fans and so very generous when he must have been feeling really sore.

I have also heard that after Spain lost in the David Cup to France, David was the only one to stay around, congratulate the French team and sign autographs.

Truely "bien educado" - which I understand means well brought up, gentlemanly, mannerly. All in all a top guy!:worship:

To take the best from his loss... at least it gives him time to recover physically from a gruelling week and a half. I thought he looked tired during the Melzer match. Hardly surprising, as in Valencia, he wasn't just playing, there was all the other stuff he'd have been doing as co-owner...

At least David has equalled his record in Paris, getting to the QFs - he now has time to prepare for London & Davis Cup Final. Equally, at the end of a demanding year, I can't blame Rafa for pulling out of Paris and Nole withdrawing with his shoulder (although folks are saying he went into it to get his $M 1 ATP bonus...) to my way of thinking, a top player's career today is so short, these these earnings and whatever endorsements they secure are their salary - cos in about 20 years or so, unless they are business savvy, they'll need it...

I can't wait to see David and Rafa in the WTF in London and at Davis Cup in Spain! A double dose of my favorite Spaniards! I wonder if Juanqui will be there to support them. I was so happy for Ferru and Juanqui this year. I was also excited to see Roger Federer win for the first time in Bercy abd Marcel Granollers win the title in Valencia.

Like Sue, I am American (of German and Italian descent), but I have a curious fascination for Spanish players. They seem to have a close bond with their families, especially Ferru, Rafa, Juanqui and Marcel.

:) But Sue, Argentina needs to earn it! Although I'll admit a tiny part of me feels bad for Nalby...he has said a couple of times his main tennis goal is to win Davis cup for his country...but it just seems like it'll be extremely tough for him. No disrespect to him (or his fans) but he's not in his peak form. And we all know that clay Rafa and David are masters. But let's see what's to come. It's gonna be a fun DC final.

And I hope David does well this time in London. He so got the "whipping-boy" title last year!

Great idea Iram!

Thanks everyone, I had a great day today. Well, it was not 100% great, there were some bad things, but also some wonderful things...

Let's start with the bad things. I could only get Category 5 tickets for today, and of course, they put Ferru on the big court, so basically, I was half-marvelling at the fact that I was watching him play for the first time, and half-enraging at the fact that I was stuck behind a stupid balcony, very far from the court, not being able to take any good pics, and moreover, having to contemplate a stadium that was about 60% empty below!

I'm so disappointed at the "Category 5" experience after enjoying Category 1 tickets on Monday, I spent part of the day trying to exchange my tickets for tomorrow. I even decided to just buy another ticket, a Cat. 2, for the day session, and guess what? Although it seemed perfectly obvious that they would schedule Tsonga vs Almagro, and Llodra vs Del Potro as the two evening matches (because so far, they have ALWAYS scheduled matches with French players on evening sessions), they somehow decided to put Ferru vs Wawrinka! So basically I "wasted" 30 extra euros and I'm still going to be stuck in Category 5 for Ferru's match. My bet was about 90% safe and I lost :(

Now, the good things : Ferru played very well against Marcel, it took him a couple of games to get into the match, and then he had it completely under control. He only scared me a little when he failed to finish it (but a couple of weird things happened and probably bothered him a bit... a point was interrupted for a reason I did not understand - probably because a big noise was heard, like a mike being hit - and then on another point, Marcel lobbed a ball into the giant screen and complained because he lost the point).

And the BEST thing of all... Today we were blessed with an autograph session with Ferru!!! They made us wait a little for the announcement, they had only two names (Nishikori and Janowicz), and said they were waiting for the third... But all morning I had a good feeling about this, I knew it had to be Ferru they were waiting for, and they were probably assuming he'd say yes (apparently he always does) and waiting for an official confirmation.
So at about 1pm they announced he was the third player signing autographs today! A LOT of people came, some even had to be turned away, but of course I went early and I got my autograph (also took plenty of pictures, they're not very good but they're still close-ups so I'll probably share a few).
Actually, I even asked him for two, because a woman asked me if I could get one for her son. Normally, you're not allowed to have two, but she said he was really nice and he would do it, and he did.

Oh and of course I got spotted by a number of people as a crazy Ferrer fan but that's just normal (I don't shout or anything but when you go around asking everyone if Ferrer is going to give autographs today, if they know when and where he's going to play and so on, they end up noticing you :D)

That's it for today, I guess, I have to go to bed because I have another full day of matches tomorrow (plus a hunt for Category 1 or 2 evening tickets... but that's gonna be hard, if not impossible )

Thanks! It was an incredible moment for sure. It was not really possible to ask for a hug, we were given instructions to be quick, not to take photos next to Ferru, and not to ask for more than one autograph, because there were so many people waiting. Also he looked a little bit tired so I didn't want to be annoying...

Today was also unbelievable.
I saw Murray lose against Janowicz (incredible atmosphere, the best of all the matches I've been to), and then Llodra eliminate Del Potro (also crazy atmosphere of course since Llodra's French).
And then, I saw Ferru against Wawrinka! I was so anxious, and I somehow ended up in the middle of the "unofficial" Wawrinka clan (some of his friends were there). But I did get my category 1 seats, and as the match ended very late, a lot of people left and gradually we were able to come down, and further down, until we were really really close.

At the end of the match I was really close to Ferru (I was near the door where the players come in and out). He was giving an interview to some TV station, and I tried to take pictures, and maybe get another autograph, but the security guards threw us out, they were eager to close the building and go home... I can tell you, I'm an obedient girl, and I would have been ashamed to force them to throw me out by force, but it took all my willpower to get away from him. Basically I went up the stairs with my head turned back, trying not to lose sight of him for as long as I could :D

I haven't had time to see what people here have to say about all the top guys losing, but I suspect there are rumours that they did not really try very hard to win (Murray seemed to be trying, but to be honest, Djokovic and Del Potro were absolutely dreadful).

Yesterday, someone asked my why on earth would I prefer watching Ferru over Del Potro... Well, too bad I won't be able to discuss that with him again, because today was a great answer. DelPo was awful, I didn't have the impression he was even trying to play properly...
Now when fans of DelPo whine about Ferru being ranked higher, I'll ask them: have you ever seen Ferrer lose a match on purpose because he had an interest in it, or simply, not try at all? I think not. Well, that's it: Ferrer respects his fans, and the audience. And to be honest, there was quite a lot of resentment in Paris towards all the top guys: Federer who retired at the last minute, Djokovic who came just to avoid the penalty but obviously did not intend to play for real, Murray who also played badly and DelPo who was just terrible.
Sure, the people responsible are first and foremost those who scheduled the WTF right after Bercy. But still, I'm disappointed in these players who pretended to come and didn't play for real.
The good news is that Ferru now has a big chance of winning this Masters... That is, if he can beat Tsonga (and Tsonga's not playing well at the moment, he was pretty bad again tonight) and whoever comes next (difficult to tell with all those surprises!)
OK I'd like to tell you even more, but I must go to bed! I'm going home tomorrow...

I was very excited for Ferru today! I hope he wins against Tsonga tomorrow and can win the tournament! I would love to meet him (and Rafa, Roger and Juanqui) someday!

Sophitia, really happy for you that you had such a wonderful time :yeah:

And also thanks a lot for the picture! I really like it, but also think Ferru looks a little tired.

I also watched the match yesterday evening and I am so happy Ferru won :bounce: I think it´s unbelievable that he is always there in the important moments, this is really what makes the difference between him and some other players!
I am really curious about the match against Tsonga tonight... I am at a concert, so I am very sad I can´t watch the match :-( But I will be there in spirit and so hope Ferru will be the winner.

No, unfortunately, no way I can watch the final live! I had tickets only for 3 days, and anyway, I must be back to work on Monday morning. The final is probably completely sold out (and I have already spent quite a lot of money, buying category 1 tickets for Thursday lol)

But I hope I'll be able to watch it on TV... I'm staying at my parents' house now, and tomorrow, me and my colleague are travelling back to the city we work in. I must beg her to differ the trip until the end of the final

Yes, and now, when some fanboy of the big 4 (or of DelPo) ask me "Why on earth would you prefer to watch David Ferrer play than (insert players' name)?"... I'll just say: Bercy 2012.

David respects us, he gave his all, AND in spite of being (apparently) the only top player who really cared about Bercy, he was also the only one (save Tipsy) who gave an autograph session for the fans.

^^ Not surprised. Haven't checked his official website in eons but at that time he monitored it himself and was very amenable to the fans who posted. I have seen at a couple of tournies I attended in the past how lovely he was to fans. I think he just does not let his success go to his head. Just very humble. One reason I have always liked him.
It is also nice to see his forum here so active again :yeah:

hi sue, I've missed u here! Hope u're well!

This is gonna be a great final. Of course no one thought this would be the final. But we have a dream-story of Jerzy making it this far and then we have top 10 player who's been on fire this year who hasn't won a masters yet. :)

Sophitia36
11-03-2012, 07:47 PM
Yes he is really lovely. Of course in Paris it was very busy and he had to sign autographs very, very quickly, so I didn't have the opportunity to talk to him.
But he was just as I thought from the various reports and videos that I'd seen. He seems very modest and shy, which is really adorable for someone like him who is after all World N°5 (yes I do like repeating this a lot at the moment ^^).
I mean, you expect it from a young guy like Nishikori, but Ferrer is 30 years old, he's very experienced and all, and yet he seems just as shy as any of the young guys.

I like the fact that he prioritizes his direct relationship to the fans, rather than the media. I tend to believe that the more media attention you get, the less you are able to be close to your fans. David says he likes to be relatively unnoticed by the media, but on the other hand, he can always be relied on for fan events (at least that's what the Bercy organizers said!) I think that's a great choice.

I was worried today at the first of the Match, but so glad David made it to a Final in a Masters :D And the reporting as been wonderful! Too bad you can't see the final  And I hope David wins, of course, but Jerzy has just been on fire this Tournament :scared:

Honestly, I thoroughly enjoyed watching Jerzy beat Murray. Apart from Ferru's matches and autograph session, it was without a doubt the best time I had over the three days I spent in Bercy. The atmosphere was absolutely amazing.

I really love this guy, but obviously I'll be rooting for Ferru all the way. And I think Ferru will win. I'm not going to pretend I'm not scared of Janowicz, I am, because if he could beat all the others, he might also surprise Ferru... But somehow, I have the feeling that Ferru is rock solid, and that he won't get caught in the same trap. He's also really motivated, which probably wasn't the case of certain other top players...

Yay! This is so awesome. He looked so happy...

And it was a beautiful final too! Jerzy did not collapse under pressure, he was visibly tired but he really gave trouble to David!

Have I stopped being a bad luck charm for my favourites? Maybe I reversed the trend by actually going to see a match? :D I go to see my first tournament, David wins his first Masters, I see it as a sign

LOL at their height difference. And I agree on that trophy, it is bizarre looking. I hope he's not too tired and can go to London with the same will to fight. Here's a pic that he tweeted after he won.
