I'm surprised that Harrison would skip the last challenger of the season while playing the two right before it, especially seeing as how the U of I courts tend to play quick and favor players with his style of game. I'll look forward to seeing Nishikori though. I've picked two of the last three winners at this tournament, and at the moment am leaning towards Bobby Reynolds using his serve to prevail here barring any quality WCs.

Ryan Harrison is on the Bratislava entry list this week.

Thanks for the heads up Smoke, as you are always on top of things. :wavey:

It does strike me as odd that he would go Charlottesville, Knoxville, and Bratislava (where he will presumably have to qualify) than go Charlottesville, Knoxville, and Champaign (where he would easily be in the MD), but I'm guessing that he is opting for the higher pay/higher points tournament and is intending to double up and play in Helsinki as well in the final week of challenger tournaments.

Where do you see your variant?
On http://www.tennisteen.it/notizie/entry-list/10638-atp-entry-list-15-21-novembre-2010.html the list is still corrupted. On http://www.illinoischallenger.com/pdfs/Champaign.pdf we find Duclos as No.25 really, but No. 34 is Poch-Gradin...

And according to http://www.illinoischallenger.com/pdfs/Champaign.pdf, McClune has direct entry to MD with his protected ranking

Anyway, Im waiting to hear about live scoring for this tourney, will let you know..

Wow, there have been years in the past where the qualifying draw was better than this year's main draw (serious). To go from having the main draw close in the mid 100s to this is a bit disappointing to be honest. There are a lot more challenger events this year in the last two weeks, so that is part of the reason (along with a high amount of injuries).

In other news, I've got eight Aussies in the main draw with Matosevic's pullout, which is insane proportionately.

total crap this Rola to play college ....he is far better....why he plays college??? Do not like this...:o:o:(

I not so sure about that. He will be a top 15-10 player in college for sure. But he is not far and away too good. He has already lost early in both ITA national tournaments this year. He has the most ATP expereince of anyone in college but that does not mean he isthe best.

I wonder how he can play college. He must have not taken any prize money for a year, because excepting even 1 tournaments money will make you ineligible.

He must have not taken any prize money for a year, because excepting even 1 tournaments money will make you ineligible.

Not exactly true. You can accept prize money up to your expenses for a particular tournament. So if you win money, you just show expenses for a nice hotel/meals

OK, quick update. Nishikori served 7 DFs in the first set alone, and had three breaks of serve to Guccione's two in the first set (yes, you read that right). The second set was played on serve, and Nishikori hit what looked like an easy lob to go back and smash that Guccione let go over him with little effort to get the break in the eight game.

Two things on Guccione: his serve is amazing (great variety with awesome kicks, slices, pace, etc.), while his volleys are rather woeful as you surely know (he also lets lobs go by him that are shocking with his size). The oddest thing about him to me is his body language though. He never shows the slightest bit of emotion, and just sort of slumps around the court almost as if he's depressed. Even leaving the facility he just took his time leaving with his head down before carefully putting his stuff in the trunk and being driven off.

I have been to A LOT of challengers across this country, and Guccione is without a doubt the most type C personality that I have ever witnessed play this game. It is really kind of cool to watch such a type C play this game, but there are times that you just want to say "Damn it man, snap to!!" as well.

Andrew Anderson went 0-8 on BPs on the first two games of Delic's serve in the 2nd set (which were both insanely long), and that was that. Delic had a nice little crowd watching him (he is a former U of I player) and there were a few solid rallies, but I would rate the quality of play incredibly poor compared to the average challenger match out there.

Cheers!

I agree. His returns are absolutely incredible. In the very first game of the match Guccione was broken to love with FOUR first serves. So crazy! Nishikori's return and game and instincts are solid, but he obviously has to improve both his first and second serve percentages in order to routinely compete on the main tour next year.

Does the place even exist

How can they host a challenger and have no internet scoreboard, or twitter or...anything!!

This is 2010 for goodness sake, what's wrong with the ATP, that should be part of the deal in hosting a challenger...communicating with the outside world.:(

I feel better now I've got that off my chest :p

Got there in time to watch Nishikori double fault another trillion times in the 2nd set with about a 25% first serve percentage. Delic by far and away has the most support of the players this week, but that had nothing to do with Nishikori's play as he served atrociously against Guccione as well.

I'll have to be honest and say that this is now the worst challenger QF lineup that I have EVER seen on the ground, and one of the organizers told me that this is the worst quality field that he has witnessed in over a dozen years of running this particular tournament. I'm not exaggerating when I say that some of the players playing the futures event in Florida this week could very well have won here instead (i.e. Bester, Gard, and even Kudla).

Was out there the majority of the day. The DeHeart-Duclos doubles match actually had a larger percentage watching them than the Bogomolov-Wolmarans match due to DeHeart having played at the U of I. Bogomolov just destroyed Wolmarans from start to finish, with the match over in 45 minutes or so. Bogomolov came right back on the same court to play doubles with Kutnetsov against Klaasen/Van Der Merwe, and it was like Jeckyl and Hyde. Bogomolov and Kutnetsov were laughing the whole time and going for just crazy shots throughout the match despite getting killed, and I can honestly say that I have never seen a doubles team care so little (which was in sharp contrast to Bogomolov's demeanor in hammering Wolmarans right before). DeHeart and Duclos were dominating throughout the match with huge serves and aggressive play, and then all of a sudden DeHeart got broken when serving at 5-4 in the 2nd set with three match points due to a double fault and two unforced errors before the team came back to win in the 2nd set tiebreak.

Reynolds-Luczak was very high quality, with a lot of aces by both players. They also had a number of long rallies, and each time it was apparent that Reynolds was faster and had the more crisp groundstrokes (although Luczak's groundies are certainly solid as well). Neither player got two points on the other's serve the entire first set, and then Luczak just fell apart in the tiebreaker with a double fault, a missed slam, and a missed sitter at the net.

Bobby Reynolds is your winner this week folks.

Filo V.
11-20-2010, 09:22 PM
This would be unfortunate for Amer since this is essentially a home event for him. Hope he can find a way back here. Knowing Alex, he's not the type to choke, he's more of the type to get empowered by pressure, so Amer is going to have to fight back here.

These USA Challenger series along the year showed almost a similar field which was quite poor under my opinion. It`s a good chance for some players that play decently on hard courts to earn on experience and get some quite easy points. Tomic possibly should focus part of his schedule on these USA swing.
