Austria: Stefan Koubek Jurgen Melzer Julian Knowle Alexander Peya

Great Britain: Tim Henman Greg Rusedksi Alex Bogdanovic Andrew Murray

Surface: Red Clay (Outdoors)

Played at Portschach, Austria

Tim Henman has proved that he can serve and volley, and play on clay at the same time with a semifinal appearance in the semifinals of the French Open. Rusedksi winning on clay? No chance lol. Bogdanovic and Murray? Maybe but they are pretty inexperienced on the Davis Cup team. Austria has a HUGE advantage. Some decent clay courters, playing at home, and picking the court surface. I say Austria winning all matches.

Personally I can see the following happening...

Henman to beat Melzer
Rusedski to beat Koubek
Knowle/Peya to beat Henman/Rusedski
Henman to beat Koubek
Melzer to beat Rusedski

Austria 2 GB 3

Assuming those are the matches.

Muster - We do not fear GB

Austria will show no fear when they take on Great Britain in the Davis Cup, insists captain Thomas Muster.

The tie begins on Friday, with a place in the elite World Group at stake.

"We are definitely not afraid," said Muster. "We know we have a good team and I think it's going to be a very interesting tie.

"I don't know what Jeremy (Bates - Great Britain's captain) is going to do, but whoever is put in the British team to play, we will challenge."

The World Group play-off begins in Portschach on Friday.

Bates can call upon in-form world number four Tim Henman, fresh from a semi-final place at the US Open, as well as Greg Rusedski, US Open junior champion Andrew Murray and Alex Bogdanovic.

Muster's squad may be less high-profile, but Jurgen Melzer, Stefan Koubek and Alexander Peya reached the third round at the US Open while Julian Knowle made the Wimbledon doubles final this year.

"We have a Wimbledon finalist in doubles, we have solid singles players and we are playing at home," said Muster.

"It's going to be sold out, and I think it's going to be a really good Davis Cup tie. I hope we can use the form of our players to have an advantage and succeed.

"We know that the British team will be strong, that Tim (Henman) is playing really well, and we will see what Jeremy comes up with."

Muster, who retired from playing in 1999, takes on the role of captain for the first time.

"I wasn't really sure if I wanted to do it because Gunther Bresnik had been the captain before me and had done a really good job for the team," said Muster.

"But, his contract finished and I was asked. I had a few months to think about it and I said 'yes', but only if it was connected with the junior programme in Austria.

"I didn't want to just be captain, I want to be involved with junior programs in the country because tennis has not been so popular in Austria for a while."

There are plenty of people who think that, at the age of 36, Muster could still do a job as a player.

The 1995 French Open champion is training as hard as ever as he competes on the Delta Tour of Champions, but insists he is not tempted by a comeback.

"No, I wouldn't think about that," said Muster.

"I wouldn't consider playing myself on the Davis Cup team because I've got to consider how well the players are playing today.

"You have got to move on. I'm nearly 37, and times have changed. I don't think it would be a good idea, a smart idea, to even try that.

"I want my players to be the ones in the spotlight, and to be successful."

And for such a livewire - a man with energy seemingly to spare - it will be interesting to see how Muster deals with trying to influence matches from the courtside.

"It will be a different feeling, sitting outside watching the players - you can't really act," he said.

"You have to sit there - you can't jump and run to get your stress out. You are just sitting there watching the players, giving them some strategy for the game.

"The bottom line is that there's a lot you can try to do, but in the end, really nothing!"

Rain delays start in Portschach
The good news is that the rain was coming from the north west. Had the thunder, lightning and endless wetness been coming from the south, that could have been "dangerous", or so thought Martin Reiter, the tournament director at the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group play-off tie in Portschach. As he tried to work out a way to get the brave boys of Austria and Great Britain on court - any court - he was taking considerable comfort from the origins of the cloud cover.

Tim Henman had been due to take on Stefan Koubek at 11.00am but as the sleepy little resort town in the mountains awoke to the cold and damp, there was little chance of that happening.

"The bad weather from the north west usually goes away fast," Reiter promised. "If it's from the south, it can be dangerous. That can stay for a long time."

The problem was that the players did not want to stay for a long time. As the rain lashed down, the chances of play on Friday became increasingly slim while the possibility of a Monday finish grew ever more likely. There was always the option of an early start on Saturday to get both the singles and the doubles completed by close of play. But with the nights drawing in and this the best of five sets on very slow clay, the chances of getting all three matches completed before nightfall were not good.

As a last resort, the tie could be moved indoors to nearby Klagenfurt but the arena there is so small that there is little room for the spectators and even less for the television cameras.

In the meantime there is much hanging around under umbrellas and lots of research into re-booking flights and extending hotel reservations. But at least the rain was not coming from the south. That really was good news.

if the dubs are played will be decided afterwards. if a player plays more than 45 games in his first match he is not allowed to do a doubles match. what a stupid rule huh - looks like boggo might get to play?

I think the rule is actually that if one of the players has already played more than 45 games then the match will be postponed, not that the player will not be allowed to play the match.

Would seem make more sense to me, anyway, though the rule is not well phrased.

Where are you Arvind Parmar!? You should replace Greg "ready to play three five-setters" Rusedski :woohoo:

And when it comes to facing Melzer, Rusedski offered a quiet word of warning. "I was only about 50 per cent when he beat me in St Poelten," he said. "He was playing well but my shape and my tennis are at a much higher standard now. I'm expecting a good match but I know I'll be a lot better than I was in St Poelten."

ae wowww
09-25-2004, 08:24 AM
hehe yeah he was a little cocky: but Arvind "Never won a DC match in many" Parmar probably wouldn't be the best replacement for Greg "ready to play three five-setters" Rusedski. Tim "Best year of my life" Henman should beat Austria's No.2 Stefan "Piercing" Koubek, but does doubles still go to 5 in Davis Cup? I thought it was only Wimbledon... or have I made a huge schoolboy error? :S Fill me in!

I will go to the BBC website later. I have just started doing military service and getting used to travelling back and forth.

Here is from Reuters.
VIENNA, Sept 25 (Reuters) - Austria's Stefan Koubek hammered Britain's Tim Henman 6-3 6-3 6-1 in the first singles match of their Davis Cup World Group playoff at Portschach on Saturday.

Koubek, ranked 81 in the world, outgunned the fourth-ranked Briton with pounding groundstrokes. Henman, a U.S. Open semi-finalist earlier this month, was lacklustre throughout, failing to find rhythm on his usually effective serve and producing errors on both sides of the court.

Henman began poorly in each set, left-hander Koubek breaking him in all his opening service games.

The 27-year-old Austrian took a 3-0 lead in the first set and a 4-0 advantage in the second before breaking Henman again to claim the set 6-3.

The British number one showed his growing confidence on clay by reaching the French Open semi-finals in June but was always second best to the claycourt specialist at the picturesque lakeside venue.

Henman appeared almost to lose interest in final set and Koubek cantered to victory.

"Stefan played a really great match tactically," Austrian team captain Thomas Muster said. "Tim just came from the U.S. Open and it was probably a bit of adjustment for him."

werent they considering playing Murray instead of Rusedski?
I saw Henman play and he wont beat anyone on this surface

Yes they were, but then Jeremy Bates decided Marray would be too inexperienced for this occasion and went with Rusedski, who actually isn't doing too badly so far - a whole lot better than Henman did anyway! Most enjoyable thing about this tie for me is seeing Thomas Muster who was my Number 1 hero in the 90's, and is now coaching the Austrian Team. I am watching him more than the match :p

well I just tuned in this match a few minutes ago because I was watching the German doubles match before, but it really must be said, that from what I have seen so far of Rusedski, that Greg isn't playing a bad match. He is playing MUCH better than his clay record this season would indicate.

What a day. *whew* Exciting like hell and it's not over until now.

Sad that Jürgen lost. He started that good with winning first set. But then Rusedski played that good that he didn't really know what to do. I think the racket misuse explains enough about his feeling in the match ... :banghead: Rusedski just was the better player, and the fact that Jürgen started the tiebreak with a double fault also speaks its own language. :p

So now:

GO ALEX, GO JULIAN!!!!! *wavesflag* :) :bigclap:

:hearts:Stef played fantastic today :yeah:. Was one of the best matches I have ever seen of him. I'm totally impressed. :woohoo: He always plays good in DC, but that was totally awesome! He :smash: Henman. *ggg*

*sigh* So let's see what tomorrow brings , and the doubles today. Henman was that :fiery: *lol*, but that's understandable, I think. *ggg* That was amusing to watch  normally he is known as a calm and nice person.

Tom did a fantastic job, but the support from the courtstand was a bit missing from the Austrian team side during Jürgen's match. That was the only negative thing I saw apart from the loss. :( It was Crazy Idiot  who did most of the support *lol*.
