Playoffs: Germany vs Slovakia

SuperRevelation

Germany: Rainer Schuettler Florian Mayer Alexander Waske Tommy Haas

Slovak Republic: Karol Kucera Dominik Hrbaty Karol Beck Michal Mertinak

Surface: Hard (Indoor)

Played at Bratislava, Slovak Republic

This will be a great match up with 2 great teams. Slovak's main guys are Kucera and Hrbaty, with Schuettler, Mayer, and Haas both great on Germany's side. Match will be played on Hard court indoors. That will probably go in favor of Germany since the Slovak's usually like slower surfaces, especially Hrbaty. Slovak has an advantage of playing at home. I say Germany will win every match except for doubles.

Rainer retired.
He is repalced by Philipp Kohlschreiber

That doesnt make it easier for Germany but Haas and Mayer are strong enough to beat Hrbaty and Beck (guess he will play singles instead of Kucera). Schuettler/Kiefer would have been a real good double but as they both arent able to play Haas/Waske will have to face the slovakians. They were able to beat Ram/Erlich so they will also have their chance this time.
Germany should really win this although Mayer is better on clay than on hardcourt.

Go Tommy :worship:
Go Flo :worship:
Go Alex :worship:
Go Philipp :worship:

I'm already excited for Friday. I guess it will be much more difficult for Germany to win with Haas and Mayer in singles. Sure, Kiefer doesn't hold a good Davis Cup career record, but at least he has beaten Hrbaty recently in LA and he played good tennis this summer and belongs to the more experienced players together with Rainer and Tommy.

I hope Mayer can get the job done, Tommy should be okay and fit, I hope.

I really question the Slovak decision to put it on hard instead of clay. An indoor hardcourt should favour the Germans more, why do they want to do that?

Although I should say Hrbaty isnt a clay courter, he is good on all surfaces and this year he has had a pretty bad record on clay compared to everything else. But they should still have played on clay.

Neely
09-22-2004, 05:38 PM
OMG, Experimentee
you would have put Slovakia on clay against Germany?
It's not often the case, but I would say that Germany would have an edge on clay because Slovakia is even worse. Which Slovak player wants to win something on clay for them?
Kucera and Beck proved to be absolutely useless so far and they never did anything good on clay.
Hrbaty would be the one with the best chances, but I don't think he is that good on clay, he reached the final in Casablanca this year, but that's already his best result and I'm not sure how much we can read into that.

IMO it would have been an abolute joke if Slovakia wouldn't consider that Hrbaty already won an indoor title and that Beck/Kucera have a much better game on indoor hard than on clay.

Clay would be worse for Slovakia than indoor hardcourt.

We have to wait for the rubbers to be announced. I have never seen Mayer playing indoor. I don't think he is as good as outdoor. Haas also prefers outdoor.

I think this one will go to the distance. 3-2 Germany or 3-2 Slovakia.

Neely
09-22-2004, 09:57 PM
yes, it's long time ago since Haas played an indoor event.
(the two matches right after his 15 months layoff earlier this year don't count)

But if he is able to continue where he ended during the 2001 indoor season I like Haas' chances

back-to-back wins in Vienna and Madrid TMS :smoke: ;)

but the question is whether he is already able to play on that level again....

I think it will be tied after the first day. Hrbaty is one hell of an indoor player including homecourt advantage. Mayer possibly is nervous too. Haas to tie it up in the 2nd game but it will be difficult. Beck can be very strong and likes to play indoors.

The doubles match is another difficult game. I see a slight advantage for Slovakia.

Haas-Hrbaty is another difficult game. If Hrbaty is playing his best tennis Haas probably has no chance.

Well, I wouldn't be surprised if Slovakia wins.

One thinks Hrbaty is only a claycourter and one thinks hes not good on clay?
Traditionally clay has always been Hrbaty's best surface, but he wasnt in good form during this years clay season, so that might have been a factor in the choice. Kucera wasnt bad on clay when he was at his peak, but he isnt doing much on any surface now. Beck likes faster surfaces, that is true. Clay is usually what the Slovaks play their home ties on anyway.

I was thinking more along the lines of most German players not being good on clay, like Kiefer and Schuettler. Although they are out, I think Mayer would be good on a fast surface like indoor hard, since he reached the QF of Wimbledon. Haas is good on any surface so he wouldnt be a consideration.

I'm not sure about the Haas-Hrbaty match. Haas has a very good H2H record against Hrbaty, and Hrbaty only started being good on indoors this year.
I think Hrbaty def Mayer, Haas def Beck, Slovaks win doubles, Haas def Hrbaty and Beck def Mayer (but i really have no idea about this one).

Jogy, that's pretty normal if you are playing Davis Cup away. Okay, maybe they shouldn't have shouted when Waske was already concentrating for his serve and as he was already in his service motion, but this was only a few times and that 1st serves/double faults are cheered is really normal in Davis Cup for the away team.

You have to deal with that kind of pressure and I'm glad that Waske was not too distracted by that. His last service game was, except this double fault, really a good one and very solid and he set up the points well for two easy smashs/volleys of Tommy.

They must have been taking lessons from the ghastly New York crowd at the US Open. They did that all the time in the Capriati/Dementieva semi-final this year and it is totally appalling and uncalled for in my opinion.

Rosie, IMO it wasn't so bad, it was only a few times, maybe on six or 7 occassions and I guess it's pretty normal in Davis Cup everywhere that the away team has to deal with that. The crowd is even more fired up then because it's a team competition.

Pathetic! Who gets tired after losing the last 3 sets 1,1 and 1? Its not as if you used a lot of effort in those sets
You might have cost the team the tie

Mayer's serve is indeed very weak, which is strange because he was serving so well in Wimbledon, tons of aces. Maybe it has saomething to do with his arm?

Kohlschreiber would have done better

KarstenBraasch#1

:o

Somehow I expected this, mainly because Kühnen was celebrating too much after yesterday's doubles.

I don't know what was up with Mayer, just nervous or also injured. If he was NOT healthy he shouldn't have played. Kohlschreiber said he had a cold. Well then let Waske play for god's sake, he can at least serve some aces.

Congrats Slovakia, a deserved victory. :)

Bilbo
09-26-2004, 02:08 PM
Waske was his best choice. He has a great serve and is not nervous in these situations. He was pumped up after the doubles match. Mayer just can't handle these situation. He fold like tent several times this year when it counts. Kuehen should have known that. He is a joke.

When Waske plays for Germany he is very strong. Mayer is a wreck. He was coming with no confidence into this match and was nervous as hell. Waske was full of confidence and has a strong serve. Waske was the best choice for Kuehnen.

Bilbo, I just can say it again... doubles and singles is a different league... Waske is strong when playing for Germany, but he has as less experience as Mayer to compete in singles on this level in Davis Cup against somebody like Kucera in the deciding rubber.

Bilbo
09-26-2004, 02:27 PM
Mayer has no experience in Davis Cup. He has not even won a set. I saw some very good matches from Waske in singles. When this guy is pumped up he is very strong. There was no reason to take Mayer. He was injured, has no confidence, was nervous and has no experience.
