Main draw is out....tough draw for Donald he'd probably have to play his A game to win this week he plays Levine in R1 then potentially Reynolds then Smyczek/Kendrick then if he got that far Dent/Matosevic. Sweeting and Harrison will play in R1 which is tough to see, would rather them play in a SF or F. Nishikori got a decent draw. Devvarman and Dent should get to the Final IMO, although I would like to see DY against Harrison/Devvarman as well.

The photo in the first post is of the pavilion on the downtown mall. No tennis courts there.

The matches will be played on the Boyd Tinsley courts:

It seems I saw the similar message from you a year ago :)
At least I have impression I saw the link and courts picture there last year...
For me, the main thing is the picture above would be connected with Charlottesville, not necessary with courts

For me, the main thing is the picture above would be connected with Charlottesville, not necessary with courtsI don't think anyone would "connect" a picture of the pavilion on the downtown mall with Charlottesville. [That's like posting a photo of a random strip mall in El Segundo to represent LA.]

If you don't want to post a photo of the tournament site, I would post a photo of an iconic location that actually has some connection w. the city such as the Rotunda & the Lawn or Monticello instead of photo of an obscure locations that most residents couldn't even identify as being located in Charlotttesville.

OK, if you live (or use to be) in Charlottesville you have to know better than me :) I don't remember the history of taking this photo (so many challengers, so many images), usually I take pictures either as result of Google image search, or simply from previous years threads, if Google doesn't suggest good one. I agree to change for any, if you give me the direct link to it :)

Are there going to be any live scores posted for this challenger.? The website is totally bogus. Why can't US Challengers get their act together for Basic Scoring?!?!?

http://www.virginia.edu/webmap/popPages/80-Rotunda.htmlThe Rotunda

The Rotunda houses offices and is used for ceremonial occasions. It was designed by Thomas Jefferson as the architectural and academic heart of his community of scholars -- the "academical village," as he called it. Jefferson modeled the Rotunda after the Pantheon in Rome. Construction began in 1822 and was completed in 1826 at a cost of $60,000. Shortly after the Rotunda's completion, many classes were moved from the first floors of the Pavilions into the Rotunda's oval rooms. The Rotunda served as the library for more than a century.

In 1895 the Rotunda was destroyed by fire. Architect Stanford White undertook its reconstruction. In 1938, students and faculty carried the entire library collection to the new Alderman Library building. In 1973, restoration of the Rotunda to Jefferson's original design began. On April 13, 1976, during the U.S. Bicentennial and on the 233rd anniversary of Jefferson's birth, the restored Rotunda was dedicated. Also in that year, the American Institute of Architects recognized the academical village as the most significant achievement of American architecture in the past two hundred years. The Rotunda appears today essentially as it did when it was built.

Former and Current Cavaliers Compete in Virginia National Bank Challenger

CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Over a dozen current and former Cavalier tennis players will be competing this week at the Virginia National Bank Men's Tennis Championships, which run Oct. 30-Nov. 7 at the Boar's Head Sports Club. The event is a stop on the ATP Challenger Tour.
Two-time NCAA Singles Champion Somdev Devvarman, currently ranked No. 94 in the world, headlines a field that also includes Americans Taylor Dent, Donald Young, Ryan Sweeting and defending champion Kevin Kim. Former Cavaliers Treat Huey and Teddy Angelinos are also competing in the main draw.
Almost every member of the current Virginia team is competing in the event, with Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.) receiving main draw wild cards. Nine other Cavaliers are competing in the qualifying draw.
Qualifying play is Saturday and Sunday at the Boar's Head Sports Club with main draw competition beginning on Monday. Tickets for the tournament are $10 daily for Boar's Head Sports Club members and $15 daily for non-members.

Qualifing draw has been partially updated, and tomorrow's OOP is out.
From the draw, P.DUCLOS, A.ANDERSON, and F.WOLMARANS won QR2, and from the OOP, I assume Y.BHAMBRI, M.SHABAZ, and K.HENSEL won.

Harrison, as usual, drew about the worst possible draw imaginable. The #1 player that I wouldn't have wanted to draw is Sweeting, and sure enough Harrison drew him (and I'm sure Sweeting would say that Harrison is who he'd have least like to have been matched up with from the unseeded players). The other player who I would really fear (depending on his health status) is Nishikori, and damn if Harrison wouldn't meet him early on as well.

There are so many cupcakes in this draw, but yet the top three contenders imo are all in the same quarter while the WCs and other cupcakes all draw one another. Should be interesting...

OMG, Don, that close v Jesse L.? Not a good sign. With the way Bobby has been playing, could be another early exit coming, even with the good H2H. However, if he can avoid MM in the SF, and Kendrick loses his R2 match, he should make the final, playing one of Kei/Sweeting/Harrison.

I went to this tournament yesterday since its the closest one to me. Got there late, was playing tennis myself on campus first. The tourney had matches on two courts, could watch both from the stands above the courts. Came in time to see third set of Matosevic - Cook. Wound up next to Donald Young's mom, who told me that at the last tournament in California Matosevic mooned the crowd and destroyed a bunch of courtside chairs. In this match Matosevic spent most of the time yelling at the umpire. He was serving for the match, dropped serve, broke back and served it out again to win, then screamed and dropped to the court, kneeled down, gave the sign of the Cross, then walked up to the umpire, who refused to shake his hand. Hilarious.

Bhambri-Domijan - Bhambri is a skinny young kid, not a huge serve but very nice forehand and returns, and good movement. Okay backhand, but his slices and drop shots didnt work well. Domijan is a UVA freshman, his style definitely suited to these courts. He looked huge next to Bhambri. Close match, came down to a third set tiebreak.

Saw end of Shabaz-Lapentti. Shabaz is another UVA guy, aggressive hitter with a two handed backhand, who picked up the win. One of Giovanni's first serves nailed a ballgirl in the stomach, he was really apologetic to her after the match. Lapentti's coach was a blond goateed guy with a fantastic mullet.

Harrison-Sweeting - Both guys wearing exact same Nike outfit and shoes. The younger Ryan played a lot better though, playing aggressive especially on the return where he punished Sweeting's weaker serves. Harrison was really impressive, big groundies and serves, Sweeting seemed overpowered a bit and was erratic. Harrison should do very well here if he keeps this up.

DeVoest - Ball - Ball has a huge lefty serve, but DeVoest saved match point at 5-6 in the tiebreak with a big serve of his own, took the tiebreak and won third set easily.

Guccione-Luczak - Fun match that was very close. Enjoyed Gooch's serve and his goofy backhand. Luczak is one of the most politely behaved players I've ever seen. Very close three setter with Gooch just barely taking the two tiebreaks.

Jones-Kim - Jones is a somewhat tall skinny Aussie kid, steady player with a solid forehand and two handed backhand. Kim won last year's tourney but is getting up there in years. A long match, Jones broke Kim at the end, Kim saved a MP with a backhand winner, but Jones hit a backhand winner down the line to take the match.

van der Merwe - Wolmarans - Two big serving aggressive South African guys. Izak has a funny looking drive one hander but the points were so quick I didn't get to see much of it. Izak was better on returns and was able to get the breaks in this match.

Joelson/Monroe - Ball/Rettenmaier - Never heard of Joelson before, long haired somewhat chubby guy. Ball and Rettenmaier looked better individually, but Joelson and Monroe had good teamwork going and won the big points to get the win. I had to leave after this match and didn't get to see the two biggest matches, a nice day though.

Forgot to add they raised ticket prices to $15 this year, was only 7 i think last year. Not a bad tournament, although not very many people in attendance. It is a low capacity private club outside of town though.

Great report indeed. I so wish that I could see Harrison again, as I saw him a bunch a couple of years back and he appears to have naturally added tremendous firepower on his shots since then. Even at 15 Harrison's hands and tennis instincts were top notch, and he appears to be a quickly rising star.

Matosevic mooning the crowd? lol. Can't say I'm too surprised, but you would think the tour would warn him to cease with his antics to a certain degree. Hope you enjoyed the show!

I wanted Tim to beat Robby, out of fear. Robby I think will beat Don, but Don has the H2H going for him, so it should be close. Also a good win for Kei, hope to see a Don v Kei final.

No, coasterman, I don't want to see Don playing MM again. The wounds are too fresh and Don would lose again. Dent, I think he can beat Taylor. Also Taylor needs the points.

Was it this guy?

I have no doubt that Shabaz can play, but Harrison took a BIG step back in losing to the "Assyrian-American" (as he describes himself) if this true. One of Harrison's critical flaws appears to be that he doesn't play well with a hostile crowd, which is probably what held true again today. In my opinion this is something that does not go away, and that killer instinct to win despite a hostile crowd is an innate ability that one is either born with or not.

I'm interested in seeing the outcome of the Bhambri-Matosevic match. I think Bhambri has a shot at winning, because I think he's a retriever type player who'll get enough balls back to bother Matosevic.

Of course, if he does win, that makes things that much easier for DY to win the whole thing.

Yep. I am a little bit confused: what Europe does he mean? There is no his name in european challengers' entry lists (I mean for the rest of the year), so what? In January? But what about USTA wildcard tourney (for Aussie Open)? He will play quallies? Why not Down Under tourneys then, to prepare for AO? Or do he plan to skip AO and play european challengers? S-T-R-A-N-G-E.

From what I have seen of Yuki Bhambri (admittedly only in the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, when his mother told me he was trying some new/different things given the lack of pressure to earn money every day...), Bhambri is not a "retriever-type player". He has strong baseline strokes, an excellent ability to return service, and a pretty strong (but not overwhelming) serve. But his main weapon is his inside-out forehand, which he drills quite early in a point to finish it quickly. And he has a killer shot on the backhand side as well. More in the mould of a Sania Mirza than a Somdev DevVarman certainly (to use a couple of Indian tennis examples).

Congrats to De Voest on the really good win. He's such a nice guy and a really smart veteran. Too bad Taylor lost it, though, needs a better run next week.

I think Rik has a good shot at beating MM. He's going to be crafty and he's a good returner. He can definitely frustrate MM. However, MM can overpower De Voest so it will be interesting.

I changed my mind, I think Don will beat Kendrick. I really hope he doesn't play MM again, I don't believe in him, and he really needs to take advantage of this opportunity and keep winning here.

On the bottom half, looks likely to be a Kei v Somdev SF, which should be a great match.

I hope there is live streaming in the SF and F like there was last year.

That's a really bad scoreline for Don against someone he does well against. He's having issues with hard hitters right now, he's getting blown off the court by all of them. The good thing is he defended most of his points from last year, and these next two events he doesn't have much to defend, so he needs to take advantage and go deep in both.

This is where Somdev played his college tennis, though. You are right the fast court would help Guccione with his game, guess that Chris bullied Somdev. Somdev is weird in that he's a grinder, but he doesn't do amazing against guys you would think he could grind into submission. Doesn't have enough pop to bother these players.

Wow, another victory for Shabaz. He's really on a roll. And we all know Robert is prone to mental breakdowns. However he's in really good form himself, so we'll see, should be tight.

I am not understanding all this vitriol heaped upon Sha-BAZ!.

I mean, this tournament doesn't even have live streaming, so unless everyone was actually in Charlottesville watching, nobody has any idea how he plays, so nobody can judge him or his talent.

Congrats for Kendrick for his first Challenger titl of the year and finshed with Shabaz dreamed week.

This year Robert had some good performances on the US Challengers. Considering his age and that he is still playing well and that he can produce some good results he can spend sometime on the Challenger tour meanwhile he enjoys it. This year is fairly good for him.

Shabaz should have asked for a SE in Knoxville, or does he have college commitments next week. Would be nice to see him more than just this week
