new diary from his site:

samedi 18 septembre 2004

Ensuite, c'était l'US Open.

Hi everyone,
I’m here to tell you what I’ve been doing after a long period during which I’ve concentrated on returning to competition. I’ve got my confidence back after winning a Challenger in Ségovie. That victory did me a lot of good. My confidence has been high since then, which I think is very important. After, I played a few American tournaments with a quarter final appearance in Washington where I lost against Agassi. It was a good result and above all, I was just happy to be playing again and play in a big match.

Then, it was the US Open. I was feeling good physically when I arrived in New York with a few matches behind me. It was ideal. I didn’t really have any specific goals. Again, I was just happy to be playing again. But after winning a match, then two, I lost logically against Sargsian.

Today, I’ll need a few more matches to get my rhythm back, but physically I’m well. Since my injury, I’ve trained really hard and I feel that at the moment I’m in pretty good form. These six months of doubt have been hard but I didn’t have much choice. I’ve had to fight to get through it but after, it’ll just make me stronger.

I was at Bucarest this week where I won two matches against Costa and Corretja before getting sick. Anyway, I wasn’t feeling my best during my quarter final match against Acasuso. I didn’t have much energy and I wasn’t too surprised when I lost against a guy who played really well.

Im leaving straight for Alicante where I should find my form quickly within a few days. I hadn’t expected to be playing in Davis Cup. I hadn’t even thought about it, to be honest. It’s come a bit earlier than I had thought but I’m very happy to be part of it and I want to try to enjoy it. I’m happy to be part of all of it again.

I don’t think that this will be a test to take my revenge after my final loss against Russia. This match, it was a huge point of my career even though I lost. I don’t think of it as a bad memory really and I do not feel at all that I have to take any revenge for myself. Nor do I feel that this experience will be a huge part of my career. I just want to play to win.

I’m heading to Alicante without any guarantee that I will end up playing in the tie; it’s the captains choice. I know that I feel good on clay and I’ll be ready. We aren’t favourites. If Moya and Ferrero aren’t in great form, I wouldn’t worry about them. It will be hard but in Davis cup, there are always surprises. It’s a test which will motivate the players but also maybe add an extra sense of pressure. We’ll play our best, as underdogs.

From Sports.fr:
Le Paulo nouveau est arrivé
22/09/2004

On connaît l'histoire.

A bon entendeur...

The new Paulo has arrived.

At 22 years of age, Paul-Henri Mathieu has already have a career full of emotion. Promising Junior, the French boy has rapidly confirmed himself winning two consequetive titles in 2002 at Moscow and at Lyon. Then, the dramatic DC final against Russia, followed by an incredible series of injuries. Today, Paulo is back in the French team and is eager to start playing again.
Paul-Henri Mathieu is surprised. Surprised to have been called to be part of the French Davis Cup team and play a difficult tie against Spain. However, for Guy Forget, the captain of the team, this selection was only logical for him. And all the same, if Seb Grosjean was present, he still would have been part of the team after his US open campaign where he reached the third round. Despite the defeat, Forget appreciated Mathieu’s form, his desire to win and his excellent physical condition. “Today, Paulo is fresher and hungier than guys like Moya or Ferrero,’ Guy Forget said optimistically.
Obviously, PHM would have eventually played in the team again, even though he has had defeats difficult to forget. He played during the final at Bercy in 2002 and lost both matches against Safin and Youzhny. We all know the story. Two sets to zero for the French player, then a Russian come back bringing the match to a fifth set, which Paulo let slip. A dramatic final which ended in tears…

No revenge to take

The defeat was not obliterated by his previous two tournament wins. Along with his injuries, he wasn’t able to rebound straight away and was automatically condemned. A difficult come back in the 2003 season and everyone was doubtful about him. Deciding to come back in 2004 with a new coach, Olivier Soulès, replacing Thierry Champion, PHM didn’t have much luck and an elbow injury meant he was forced to take a six-month break.
Coming back to competition in July, this time Mathieu, has a new found confidence, winning a Challenger. He played well in America and earnt a Davis Cup selection. “Frankly, I hadn’t expected to be playing in Davis Cup. I hadn’t even thought about it, to be honest. It’s come a bit earlier than I had thought but I’m very happy to be part of it and I want to try to enjoy it.”
Does that mean he will have to forget the 2002 final? “No. I just want to play to win.”

Surely, these difficult times have just made this young player stronger and more mature; he now just appreciates playing. As for whether he expects to play or not: “I’m heading to Alicante without any guarantee that I will end up playing in the tie; it’s the captains choice. I know that I feel good on clay and I’ll be ready.”

Interview from Tennis Mag>>>

Well, I'm am too lazy to put the whole interview here (and I know it will interest only liz and she doesn't read french), but, to summarize, Paulo gave an big interview in the new tennis mag, and the most interesting things are that:
- he uses to write his feelings since he's a child. He does it on his pc. He said he needs that, it's like when he talks to his psychologue (Elizabeth her name...lol), he likes, and answered, to the question of the journalist that maybe, later he will, why not, make a book to tell life of a tennisman.
- he doesn't like Roddick, Robredo and Coria, guys of his generation (92's) LOL

Interview from Tennis Mag>>>

[B]Tennis Magazine : Since you have returned to competition after a long absense due to your injury, you seem more 'open'. Do you agree?

Paul-Henri Mathieu : I think i've learnt to enjoy myself more after being sidelined for so long. I try and have more fun on the court and enjoy it while i can. I'm trying to get less frustrated. I've had a lot of time to think, so i think to a certain extent i have changed...but its a shame that it took a break from tennis to realise this.

T.M. : Keeping in mind that you had to take half a year off, how do you feel about this past year?
P-H.M. : It's a bit strange, but I wouldn't say it was what i would have hoped for (smile). In March, I kept hoping that the months to come would help me recuperate and recover, but when i tried hitting the backhand, the pain wouldnt go away. I was recommended to have an operation and then we decided on just spending a month recuperating. It was a good solution. In July, I was back on the circuit and was lucky enough to win the Challenger at Ségovie. Everything went from there. Since then, i haven't felt any signs of the injury returning and in a way, it was one of my best seasons.

Tell us the nature of the injury and the stages that you had to go through.

P-H.M. : Two days before starting my season at Chennai, i was injured while hitting a backhand at training. I suddenly felt something in my left wrist. I thought it was just a sprain and that's why i went to Australia. So i went, but the pain was still there and obviously wasnt able to play. I returned to France and had tests done, which revealed that the tendon had been pulled and the ligament was torn. Pyschologically, it was really hard because i had to fight through injuries in 2003 as well. If i had an operation, it wasnt guarenteed that we'd come out with the result we wanted. However, i was relieved when Bernard Montalvan told us that we had to operate on it.

T.M. : During this difficult time, who did you turn to and what did you do?
P-H.M. : Luckily, my parents were there. My girlfriend, Quiterie, was also always there for me. I had some really tough times, but with them there for me, it made it easier. I started working with Olivier Soulès at the end of December but 10 days later, it turned into a catastrophe. Despite the injury, i continued to train myself as i was able to hit forehands still and use my one-handed back hand. I was able to enjoy my time off to do a bit of physical training as well. After all, i had never ever done any of that before (smiles). I ran a lot, i went to the mountains. Endurance and speed were things i tried to work on.

(l'equipe)

Mathieu a décollé

In short, Paulo hesitated before going to Chennai. He consulted two other Frenchies, Patience and Carraz, to know if they were going to India, and the organisators assured them it was ok so he went here.
He won his first round but he's anxious cos he might play Carlsen in the second one, and he injured against him the last year in Chennai.

From India's Newspaper >>
Mathieu shines

In the first round in 2004, Mathieu conceded the match against Carlsen. Today he came prepared.

Mathieu consolidated on the lone break in the sixth game to take the first set without too much ado. The left-handed Carlsen, with a ranking of 93, challenged Mathieu in the second set with daring shots from the baseline. However, the Frenchman held his own and got the vital break in the eleventh game to seal the match.

Mathieu, who missed the first half of 2004 because of a wrist injury, missed seventh months of competitive tennis. When asked about his next round match against Moya, whom he had beaten in the Davis Cup semifinals last year, Mathieu replied, "It's going to be tough."

On ATP's site >>

Mathieu : "I am very happy I won. It wasn't an easy match. He serves very well but I tried to stay focused all the way through the match. It got very tight at the end and I am happy I was able to win in two sets."

On his 2004 injury: "I hurt myself prior to my first match here in Chennai and was out for seven months after that. It feels great to be back here and healthy."

On his next match: "Now I play Carlos Moya. It will be extremely difficult. He plays very well on hard, he won the tournament last year and he is very motivated."

http://www.tp9.net/fr/multiaudio.htm

Et jeudi, à 22h00, ça sera Arnaud l'invité. A ne pas manquer ! :) :D

Liz you were wondering when he doesn't play in Acapulco...because Forget asked him not to play here. He will come back to prepar the first round of DC.
There was an article in l'equipe about Paulo 3 days ago...Paulo said he was in South America to prepar RG, which is his main focus. And it helps him too to prepar DV, on clay, against Sweden in Strasbourg !

Hey thanks for the new site.....Paulo is my favourite French player....well he is from the same place as my Dad.....and I have so much family still living there....it made me so happy to see him win the last rubber...that must have made his confidence soar...I so hope so....we all know he has the talent...and I know I much prefer to see him with a beaming smile on his face rather than tears in his eyes...like he did against Youzny....and Russia.....I still have not forgiven Youzny for that......doubt I ever will...

Just my little thought of Paulo...

Seems to me that Paulo wasn't inspired. When he's leading 3-1 in that 2nd set, at that very moment seemed like nothing was exciting anymore. But when he's down a break in the 3rd, he's fired up and went for some great winners.

I think he really needs to find his motivation to play every single point. And I wonder where all those "come on!" that he used to pump himself up couple of years ago have gone....

Anyway, ALLEZ PAULO!!! Create a magic!

Marine
03-16-2005, 05:59 AM
Paulo had this bad habit from his years in Bollietiery academy, to say this irritating "come on" at very point, like Hewitt, but this habit disapeared, now he's calm, the last week in DC he never said that.
I suppose he says that when he's not in form mentally, it does't help him.

Well, Hewitt at the next round ??? I guess he's starting to get tired by his 2 last weeks but ALLEZ PAULO :rocker:

He still can develop, and I felt in DC final match, 4th set that he didn't want 02 DC final to happen again. It's good that this trauma happened early in his career, it's a reference point to build on. It's more his fragile body that is worrying IMO. ;)

Got this from another forums...

---
Paulo said as he didn't recieve a WC so he wasn't sure if it's a good idea to play through qualifying round. He may not play because he was so tired from the DC and those matches in IW but still, he'll decide in the last minute.

Hope a couple more players will withdraw for him to take place directly in the main draw... But if he decides not to play, it's very understandable and might be the best thing for him.

Marine
03-19-2005, 08:59 PM
Paulo said he was "out of form", "died" by his last 10 days so I suppose the score of the match is not important.
He doesn't know if he'll play in Miami, because he has to play the qualifs, and he's very tired, maybe he will decide to go back to Europe to take a rest before his next tournament (what's the next tournaments ?? On clay ?? I dunno... )
I think it's better not to play in Miami.

”La confiance est revenue”

mardi 29 mars 2005

Paul-Henri

Liz has started his hibernation

And you know I'm an Argentine fan... So here's my offer: I first translate that article about Puerta, and then, if more ppl fan of Paulo want me to translate his whole interview, I'll do it, OK? Just let me know...

Leads 3-1. Gets broken twice. Coria serves for the match at 5-4. Paulo breaks, then loses his serve at 5-5. Saves 4 MPs at 6-5, but surrenders the match.

An interview with:

PAUL-HENRI MATHIEU (Through Translation)

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. You had good chances in the second set. Towards the end, you had good momentum. Do you have the impression that you let it go?

PAUL-HENRI MATHIEU: Mainly I played a bad first set. I started off bad. We didn't know when we were going to play. I ate my plate of pasta just before I went on the court; it is not ideal. I had trouble finding my rhythm.

During the second set, when we started playing again, I missed two opportunities that I should not have missed.

Q. How is Coria playing on clay?

PAUL-HENRI MATHIEU: He sends back everything. He waits until he's able to counterattack, and he moves very well.

Q. You missed some volleys.

PAUL-HENRI MATHIEU: Yes, especially when I had a chance to go 4?1. But I also won points with my volley. When you go up to the net, you have to accept that there might be some mistakes.

Q. Are you disappointed, frustrated?

PAUL-HENRI MATHIEU: I am frustrated. It's the type of match you should win if you want to be at a higher level.

It's a pity because thanks to the wildcard, I was directly in the main draw without playing the quallies. For the next two tournaments I will have to play the quallies.

Q. What did you lack during that match?

PAUL-HENRI MATHIEU: I should have been more consistent. I wanted to do too well; therefore, I was tense, and that made the difference.

Q. How did you manage the rain delay?

PAUL-HENRI MATHIEU: It was difficult because we didn't know when we were going to resume play. We were waiting.

Q. When you came back on the court, you seemed to be fitter than Coria .

PAUL?HENRI MATHIEU: No, I felt already better at the end of the first set.

Q. Were you upset that play stopped?

PAUL-HENRI MATHIEU: Yes, I believe we could have finished a game, an extra game.

His new diary

”Dur tirage”

mercredi 13 avril 2005

Salut,

A+

Paul-Henri

Paulo talked about his match against Coria. He did't take advantage of his occasions, it's a pity...but he says he didn't feel unferior to his adversary. :D
Bad news now... a knee pain. He has to see with the doctor, but he thinks he won't play the qualifs of Barcelona, and hopes to be OK for Munich.

Paulo broke up with Olivier Soules ! (good news I don't like him  )

I don't know who'll be his next trainer but until Roland Garros it's Patrice Hagelauer who'll coach him. It's perfect, I like him, he's a great guy, very experienced (and maybe can I add he was Noah's coach in 1983 when he won RG... :o )
Unfortunatly their association will come to end after RG because Hagelauer is also the second trainer of the french team in davis cup and he doesn't want to have 2 roles.

(I hope he'll change of opinion and will stay with Paulo)

It's funny. He only wakes up when it's Davis Cup time, and beats the likes of Moya and Johansson. In other tournaments, he loses to Almagro (even Mickey Mouse tournament-player Ginepri took a set off Almagro) and a returned-from-injury Massu. :o And it's ironic because it was a Davis Cup match which probably hurt him the most mentally.

Paulo gave news at his site, I'll translate in the evening

I am happy he seems to be confident and positive despite his last defeats. (thanks for the article Marine)
Good luck Paulo!!!

Ughhh..ok, to be honnest, I'm too lazy to translate Paulo's diary :awww:
Well, I can summarize: he thinks he wasn't very lucky bu his draws these last weeks, like in MC where he played Coria at first round.
He stoped with Soules, even if he's satisfied by his work with him. He'll play with Hagelauer until RG, he's confident because he knows him well in davis cup, but he doesn't know who'll be his newt coach after...
He didn't play well the last weeks, but he's not worried because he says clay is his best surface and he's, of course very motived by RG, he knows he'll have pression but he's ok with that.

I read something funny in Le Parisien today. Paulo talking about Richard:

...Paul Henri is delighted about Gasquet's explosion.
"he should have to reveal himself one day or another. He knows doing all. I laughed when I read Gael is better. Gael, it's strong, but Richard, it's still stronger."
Good compliment ! (Well, I dunno if Gael will appreciate but Paulo is honnest and I agree so...lol)

Perhaps "emergence" or "explosion on the scene"? "Explosion" used alone sounds like :explode: .

 He lost again! I 've heard from someone who watched the game that Gonzalez did a very good match though!
The good thing with all these defeats is that Paulo won't have any pression in RG.
Allez Paulo! Keep being positive! I am sure you will have a new "eclosion" ;)

I don't understand why some players are unbeatable and physically so strong... Paulo said in a newspaper today he's impressed by Nadal: "In Roma, I was next to him 2 hours before our respective matches. Wisely I was eating pastas while he was devouring a big steak- fries !" That's not normal...

sophia_c
05-12-2005, 06:46 PM
Well maybe its normal for Nadal.....and it works...maybe Paulo should start to eat the steak...and then it will be allez Paulo!!!!..in fact he could do with building up...I for one would love to see more of him....

:) "tout le sport" showed Paulo 's 1st training in RG with Patrice Hagelauer. They were really happy of the training. Paulo seemed relaxed and confident. I hope he will have a good draw... Can't wait for it :yippee:

Paulo draws F.Lo in the 1st round. Who made the draw? As if Richard vs Nadal in the 3rd round wasn't enough... :fiery:

Having said that, if Paulo decides to play well (that's a big if  ), he has an easy path ahead. ;)

At 1st sight, i thought it was a difficult 1st round for Paulo but I checked the head to head and even if Lopez leads 3-1, their matches have been really close:
- in Kitzbuel (clay) in 2002 Lopez 7-5 7-6
- in Kitzbuel (clay) in 2003 Lopez 3-6 6-3 3-0 (Paulo withdrew because of injuries)
- in Montreal (hard) in 2003 Lopez 6-4 3-6 7-5
- in Moscou (carpet) in 2003 Mathieu 6-1 6-4

Ok now it's in the best of 5 sets. I hope Mathieu will fight. He can do it!
ALLEZ PAULO! :worship: :worship: :worship:

I 've just checked the players left in his part of the draw:
Andreev
Kiefer
Canas
Puerta
Warwinka
Volandri
Acacuso
I would say that the most dangerous of these players is Canas. If he manages to beat him, well....
