Who are your favorite players and why?

09-15-2002, 06:48 PM
I think this an appropriate question because I know nothing about any of you.

Well, I like Guga because he has a really relaxed way of playing. Also, he reminds me of myself, since I grew up in the south, went to the beach a lot. I'm just really carefree and into music too, and we both like Bob Marly alot. I also like Marcelo Rios and Andy Roddick because they are both just so hilarious on the court, along with being great players. I want to pay to see someone who will make me laugh.

This bitch "scribbled" not sign...my program @ TMS Toronto this year...not only did he scribble on everyone elses, he scribbled on Nicolas Escude's side of the page!

...but yes he is a very funny little man....

:p :D

I have many man faves, but I'll just list a random few ;)

Juan Carlos Ferrero - I like his game style. I know it bores some people, and many think that every baseliner plays the same, but I don't see it that way. I like how he moves so well, is so quick back and forth, etc etc. I like his cool demeanor on court, that doesn't give too much away (usually anyhow). I admire what he has had to overcome to be where he is now.

Fabrice Santoro - I just love watching him play. I don't know a lot about him personally, but he is such a clever, crafty little player that I can't help but smile at some of the shots he makes :) He has such ugly, yet effective techniques hehe.

Mark Philippoussis - Despite all the surgeries, all the injuries, he has done his best to remain positive. Perspective will do that to you, but he has made the most of some crappy luck. Not to mention that IMO he can potentially do anything - when he is on his game is incredible. His serve goes without saying, his backhand is beautiful, he moves well for a guy his size (and his knees), his return of serve is good, etc etc.

Tommy Haas- purely based on his game. I was indifferent to him untill I saw him in Toronto this year live (i saw him in montreal last year too, but not a full set even), and he can do it all. While making it look easy.

Maybe i'll add more later :wavey:

i like the Fed because he has an all around game... very crafty, and makes it look so easy...and when he's in the zone he can blow any one away...if only he'd straighten out his mental act he'd win more matches...

you took the words right out of my mouth Mrs.B!Plus it doesnt hurt that he looks good whilst doing so.........

Juan Carlos Ferrero - like his aggressive game, that beautiful forehand, his on-court demeanor, doesn't give up easily, never loses his cool (well, not never, but you know what I mean). Also, like him because he's just so normal, never act like he's a big star or something, and all the spanish players like him so he must be a nice guy. And that when he's young, he rejected all those big name offers (from Bolleteri and Barcelona) and still get to where he is right now, makes me think that he has strong belief in himself and his coach. Ya, and the adversity at young age that he overcame, does make me admire him even more.

Pat Rafter ˇV his beautiful serve and volley game, his integrity and generosity.
Safin ˇV his great talent. His game is really wonderful when it's on.
Moya ˇV powerful forehand, I think itˇ¦s the best in the tour.
Grosjean ˇV his game is crafty, beautiful to watch.

I'm indifferent to Hewitt, but admire him for being so mentally strong, and his ability to block the negative vibes and concentrates on his game.

Nacho - I didn't forget Nalbandian, I just didn't talk about him in the first round :p I also "forgot" Grosjean, and about 50 others :D

09-15-2002, 09:33 PM
Kafelnikov - My reasoning I like him is more for a personality factor. Judging by his interviews and the like, he says what he thinks and couldn't give a crap what anyone thought about it. He isn't concerned with what he is expected to say and act like. He is just totally honest when asked a question. Some people don't like that, and he could care less :p

09-15-2002, 09:35 PM
Andy Roddick - He's got great talent and wears his heart on his sleeve. And he really tries to get the crowd involved. No doubt his game needs improvement, but i"m sure it will, he's still young.

I like Rafter and Pete too, but since i"m rushing off to school, don't really have time to elaborate, lol

I didn't start liking Nalbandian till I saw him lose to Grosjean in Rome (?) - he held two match points and somehow lost it. I like Grosjean too though, so I was cool with that ;) Originally I was not to keen on him because he beat Ferrero in Estoril ;) But after seeing him against Grosjean, I thought that he had a lot of potential if he just put it all together for the full match!
Of course him reaching the Wimbledon final, thus allowing me to rub it in the faces of certain ignorant tennis fans untill the end of time - certaintley made me like him more.

And of course Grosjean, because he is another crafty player. :) Clement is cool as well for that reason, and god bless the sunglasses and bandanna

09-15-2002, 11:40 PM
Hewitt - One of the few ATP players left who can play rallies. This makes his matches interesting - no watching serve after serve @ 210 KPH

09-16-2002, 02:37 AM
Goran: funny, humourous, crazy, do a lot of charity, handsome, gorgeous and at first i liked him because of sympathy, failing to win wimbledon despite being in three finals :(

Pete: the greatest of the greatest, always low-profied and not arrogant, just lets his racket do the talking, win against all odds

also like:

Alex C: very nice
Lapentti: so cute

also feel sympathy for Mark P, wastage of talent because of injuries, so damn gorgeous

One of few who can rally? Are you being sarcastic?

I like a lot of players but I'll stick to the top five(active and retired). Here goes:

1. Rafter: I love his serve and volley, chip/charge attack game, especially in '97-early 99(before shoulder injury). Not only was his serve so effective then, his volleys were crisp and assured... and he had this great passion for the game and warrior like mentality that showed on the court. When he went out to play, he went out to win. And he's so generous and kind off the court and his personality is so adorable...I could go on...

2. Hewitt: At first I wasn't sure I would like him, despite the hype, because there was so little TV coverage on him. When I finally saw a match, I was immediately impressed by his energy and passion for the game. I especially loved the fist pumps and come-ons. I love how he can look like he is going down...then manage to turn the match in his favor. He never 'tanks' a match.

3. Haas: I was initially indifferent to Haas because there was a lot of hype but no real results. But I saw him playing live about two years ago and I was blown away. I love the one-handed backhand and the variety of shots...he can hit the ball really hard and also finesse it. He really can do everything, it's a shame he hasn't won a major yet. He needs to have a consistently reliable serve...each time I've seen him lose an important match, his serve let him down. Funny enough, another thing I think is holding him back is his mental strength...but I do like to see his temper on the court;). And his looks don't hurt.

4. Moya: When Moya won the French Open and was number one the next year, he was demonstrating why I like him so much...he had a great forehand, was fast and fluid darting around the court, served well...but then he had that horrible back injury and the slow comeback including a short bout with extra poundage and 'spare tire syndrome.' Thankfully, it seems like the real Moya is back. And he is pretty easy on the eyes too.

5. Guga: What can I say...he is such a lovable character. He seems so easy-going and laid back on court, almost like a goof with his rangy body and bebopping walk and mop top( I loved the wild hair days the best), yet for some reason, when he's going after the tennis ball, every goofy movement has purpose. And he seems to do it all with such ease. Here's to hoping for a full recovery from that hip surgery!

09-16-2002, 02:15 PM
My fave is Dominik Hrbaty. I love his game, the way he dominates his opponents by drilling groundies from the baseline. He's normally a baseline player, but he cracked me up at the Australian Open one time when he was playing Rafter and got frustrated by his net game, so he started serve volleying to give Rafter a taste of his own medicine! And was pretty successful at it too, nearly won the match. He's also a very funny, down to earth guy, he's funny in a geeky kind of way. I love his goofy grin and how he wears those legion caps that no one else on tour but Max Mirnyi wears. And his guts and determinition in every match, how he never ever gives up and keeps working just as hard when hes two sets to love down as he did at the start.

Number 2 is Agassi. I love how he has such an exciting game, always standing inside the baseline, taking everything early and attacking. He's been through tough times in his career but he shows hes got the stuff of a champion by coming back to win Grand Slams and be #1. I like how he bows to the crowd after every match and isnt afraid to be frank and say what he thinks in interviews. And he comes up with the best witty answers in all his interviews showing that hes intelligent as well as a great player.

My other faves are all in my sig, i've probably wasted too much space on these two so i wont write anything on the rest.

09-19-2002, 02:39 AM
Here are some of my favorite players

1. Marat Safin - I like this guy in so many ways. For one, he is immensely talented. His groundstrokes are smooth, one of the best I've ever seen so far. And he's always a threat on all surfaces, reason why people are expecting Marat to score major points and rack up titles. He has this uncanny ability to maintain balance even while on the move and that allows him to hit with pace and spin and swing with enormous force. That amazes me!:) :)

And Marat is sooo funny. He plays to the crowd. Apart from his matches what I'm looking forward to in a tourney is watching his interviews over and over again.

Why I like Marat and why is he worth getting my sleepy ass infront of TV at 3 am just to see the guy play? Immense talent, amazing sense of humor, a dash of craziness and oh, add to that already impressive resume his lovely Russian accent! Plus there's something about Marat that cannot be defined. He gives a whole new meaning to the word excitement!:bounce: Ohhh, I almost forgot , Marat is hotttt!!!
But it's not easy being a fan of Marat. It's one hell of a roller coaster ride (SuperSafin Express???):D :D :D And I ahve no idea what's gonna happen next. It drives me crazy but I have come to love it over the years.:) :)

2. Andy Roddick - The first time I saw Andy play, I was like, Wow this guy has tremendous potential. Blistering FH and devastating serve. And he's funny as well.

3. Roger Federer- Most people I know had jumped into his bandwagon when they saw his game. Can't blame them!!! Roger has blown me away so many times with his brand of play! Love it!!!:) :)

Yeah, it's just a pity that he was never warmed up until the 3rd set!

Just Ditto everything Cheliste said about Marat and there you have it!! Totally agree girl!! He's amazing! :)

Lleyton Llegs Hewitt.. how could I forget him??? Love Llegs! ;)

Guga... totally forgot him too.. lol.. Love Guga! How can anyone not?

I also like Tommy Haas. fantastic Backhand and Back end.. lol! Just an amazing player to watch... especially live! ;)

Juan Carlos Ferrero is my # 3.. lovely to watch him play when he's on! This guy has some amazing ground strokes!

Another player who's a joy to watch when he's on is Roger Federer.. this guy has a great game as well! So.. those are my faves.. but Marat will always be #1! :D

Active players:
1)Marat - when he's on, he 's paerforming art and science. touch, power, shotmaking. Wjen he's not on he's still exciting forthe tantrums, the racquet smashing, the funny things he does on court.

2) Lleyton - will not give up ever and because he returned Taylor Dent's 140 mph serve at Wimby 2001 and it was a rteturn winner. I have never seen that before or since.

3)Andre Agassi - just because

4)Guga - I'm not the greates fan of his but like LLeyton he always fights to the end and like Lleyton he's a skinny guy you would never bet on when it comes to facing the big guns of the men's circuit.

Inactive players:
1)Boris - the becker dive-and-roll

2)Rafter - just because

numero uno: CARLOS MOYA
He has a phantastic game, a fabulous forhand, his volleys become better and better. He is as fast as light; His behaviour on court is acceptable: he is sportive, doesn't want a point if he doesn't deserve it. Shows sometimes his emotions, when he was young he looked very cool on the court, now he felt a lot more confortable on court with all the people and he is not that shy any more. But he stays focused on his game and didn't become a showman like some other does.
He is friendly for his fans.
He doesn't attrack the attention from the media.

2 Roddick: love that young man, the opposit from Moya. When I am watching him during his matches, I am amusing myself. Must always laugh with his funny faces, his movements with his body etc.

3 Grosjean and Clement: love watching their matches. Always beautifull rallys and points; They are fighting for every ball.

09-22-2002, 07:29 PM
I really like Andy Roddicks game! He's so powerfull and agressive... He has soo much energy and I love the way he reacts! :)
I can also find that with Lleyton... :)

09-22-2002, 07:53 PM
Guga and Roger fEderer :) ;) ;)

09-25-2002, 08:25 PM
Stian Boretti is serious about his sport, he is gutsy and he still holds his youthful optimism alive.
Among the big boys: To mention one could doom him to loose his next match, wath up Kafelnikov, Safin and Federer.

09-26-2002, 04:47 PM
Kafelnikov:cause I like his game a lot,specially his backhand.
Gambill:cause i love the 2-handed shots
Corretja:because he's such a gentleman on court
Agassi:i like his powerful game

Chloe le Bopper
09-26-2002, 05:20 PM
I'm also keen on Federer - his year has been relatively forgettable (considering his potential), as he's been a non factor since winning Hamburg... but when he's on his game is like "poetry in motion" as some like to say :)

That hasn't changed, and the results will come eventually.

He is frusterating though ;)

09-26-2002, 07:12 PM
It will take to whole page im afraid.
But my two all time faves are Alex Corretja & Patrick Rafter... I draw inspiration from both on the court & outside it. On court its especielly Patrick, who has the most beatifull game i have EVER seen.

09-26-2002, 07:15 PM
Also i love Goran & Marat on court because they are the best to watch, soooo funny.
Tommy Haas? I cant explain him, but i cant bring myself not to root for him... Jonas Bjorkman is mr. super talent no achivments.
How can you not like Guga?
Well i wont start & explain each of my faves. Heres a challenge, you can try to guess what i like about them :o

Ma. Estefania
09-28-2002, 11:19 PM
Ok, my fave players are: Marat Safin, Nicolas Lapentti, Magnus Norman, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Feliciano Lopez, Andy Roddick, Pete Sampras, Mark Philippoussis, David Nalbandian, Fernando González, and Richard Gasquet.

09-28-2002, 11:27 PM
my faves are:
JC ferrero, Marat safin (cuz hes so funny to watch, you never no what to expect.), and kuerten.

09-29-2002, 12:12 AM
Hi all... i'm new here :)

my fave player?? i just love Marat Safin.... for all the reason afore-mentioned ...!!

he's just so cute!! :D

09-29-2002, 09:50 AM
I'm new too. My favourite players are Federer, Hewitt, Malisse and O. Rochus

09-30-2002, 04:00 AM
The one and only : gustavo kuerten
why? I don't know why? since i watched him at 2001 aussie open where he played in 2nd round and he's so shining and relaxing. He's the only player to make me exciting while i watch him

Gonzo Hates Me!
09-30-2002, 04:17 AM
Wow Andypoo! This thread has really taken off. I can't recall if I've posted in it!

Like it has been said, when he plays, he's so relaxed. It's as if all his shots are unintentionally immaculate--as if he doesn't try. He just looks for a spot, and the ball goes there. I love his backhand. When other players hit a backhand, I squint my eyes in fear that I will hear the linesman go "Ooooooouuut!" I don't do that with Guga. He's just so fluent on the court, beautiful groundstrokes! And he is a clay specialist, but with side projects. He is not Juanqui Ferrero, he has titles on other surfaces THANK YOU! He mixes up his play. He doesn't just stay at the baseline. His grunts. Monica #2, but funny, not scary. And how can we not love his demeanor--on and off the court. Funkadelic, funny, cute, charming... not enough words in the dictionary. That's why I love it when he's down and he gets mad! It's funny seeing him mad. It's a weird look on Guga, but Marat fans and Lleyton fans--it's nothing special to them!

So many of the reasons I like Guga! The relaxed game style, the groudstrokes that just come so naturally. It just looks like he doesn't try so hard. But I love him for the fact that he is such a girl! He's a baby! He never hesitates to cry on court. Your emotions are showing. So what! A real man is not afraid to be perfectly human! He knows when he's accomplished something big. What Rogi fan can resist the classic drop to the knees, the mouth opening wide as tears flow down his face. He did it when he basically won for Switzerland over USA in DC. He did it when he defeated Pete at Wimbledon. I just can't wait to see him when he wins a Slam!!!

Lucas Arg
09-30-2002, 04:53 AM
Guillermo Canas. 1st He is argentinean, he has one of the best forehands I ve ever seen and he moves all over the court and win amazing points.

Gaston Gaudio. Her overhead backhand is impressive, he is also a good returner. The only thing I don't like about him is he doesn't play well in every courts.

Alberto Costa. He is hot. A great fighter!

Andre Sa. My favorite brazilian (I also like Guga), but Andre is the choosen. I love his game.

Others: Juani Chela, David Nalbandian, Davide Sanguinetti, Younes El Aynaoui, Jean Michael Gambill, Sebastien Grosjean, Guillermo Coria, Mario Ancic, Cedric Pioline, Paradorn Srichaphan.

09-30-2002, 08:25 AM
My number one player is Marat. The first time I've seen him play was at RG 2000. I didn't know who he was, but liked his game. When they made a close up of him I also noticed how cute he is. Since then I'm a huge fan. He has amazing hands and can play incredible tennis. Off course I also love the behaviour on court. I think all the other things are already mentioned on other posts.

Another favourite is JC Ferrero. I also like his game, the good looks and his on court behaviour. He's a real fighter, but contrary to Marat he can keep his emotions under control.

For the rest I like watching Kafelnikov, Henman and the Morrocans, cause they're my compatriots and a lot of others.

09-30-2002, 01:04 PM
I'm new here... And just thought to post...something... :) And say a big HI to everyone!
My fave players are:
1. Andy Roddick <3
2. Patrick Rafter... He's just the BEST! He's the reason I started to watch tennis... And I miss him SO much... :)
3. Jarkko Nieminen... Only because his finnish... And I'm from Finland... He's the only finnish guy that can really play tennis... :)

10-01-2002, 02:03 AM
Magnus Norman

10-01-2002, 02:08 AM
Thomas Enqvist, because he's from Sweden :)
