Gaston is in the MD, MVA will make it, so they can be erased from potential WCs.

This draw is so amazing, it is full of the classic clay courters. MVA and Chucho coming back from injury, hopefully they can both give their best. Del Bonis, Velotti, Arguello, the young up and comers. Massu, Ventura, Gato, old dogs heading towards the end of the line. RRH, Cuevas, Charly, guys who have had good seasons and runs lately.

All this is shaping up for an exciting event!

I read something (I forgot the site link) that Gaston basically even if he wanted to play, is in the position where his back basically has degenerated to the point where it will be an intensive rehab and even potentially surgery if he even contemplated continuing. Basically, that his back is going to force him to retire even if he decided to retire.

I think that if I wake up early I`m going to attend some matches tomorrow in the morning. I want to see Albano, Trungelliti, Konfederak, Mena, and Elias and see what are there real chances.

I might attend a night session during the week as I have to work. But if there are some interesting matches for the weekend I guess I`m going to go for the semifinals

Today I attended the first round of the quallies. My intention was focused to see how of some of the young Argentines and Portuguese Gastao Elias develop against more experienced players. I saw the following matches.:

Guillermo Duran bt Rodrigo Albano 6-1 6-0
Duran was superior in all fields to Albano who gave no opposition on the 2nd set. Albano has not even the level to give some fight on the Future level.

Marco Trungelliti bt Jonathan Gonzalia 7-6 6-2.
Marco gave a big fight on the first set against pusher Gonzalia . Marco has a good serve and heavy forehand and backhand. He still needs to control his nerves and especially work on his sideline movements. He isn`t nothing extraordinary but he has the tennis to play on the Challenger tour.

Alejandro Fabbri bt Kevin Konfederak 6-1 6-2
Inspite of the result Kevin showed a great potential on his strokes against a more experienced player. He has an overall good game, he sets some good strategies and has a nice attitude. I think that with a good training team he has the potential to be a top 200.

Facundo Mena bt Diego Cristin 5-0 and retired.
I couldn`t see enough to say if Mena can be a good project. He has a good serve and aggresive groundstrokes. I should see him again to give an opinion of his posibilities on the tour.

Andres Molteni bt Andres Kurdyla 6-1 6-2
Molteni showed some great tennis. He is playing much better and a more aggresive style than what I saw of him a couple of years ago. I heard that Kurdyla was given a WC by the organization because he knows somebody linked to Mariano Ink. That was something mentioned on the stands so I don`t know if that is true. Kurdyla is just a good club player :)

Guido Pella bt Juan Vazquez Valenzuela 6-3 6-2
I only saw the first set and Pella was struggling with himself one more time. It`s just a big shame because Guido has the game to be in the top 200 but Pella is the biggest rival of himself.

Gastao Elias vs Catalin Gard
The match was set on a secondary court where I wasn`t able to see it properly and I left the match when Gastao was leading 4-1 in the first set. Gard`s tennis is a cheaper version of Adrian Ungur`s one. The same school of tennis.
I was really impressed by Gastao`s tennis. The guy has a great two handed backhand, a nice forehand and his volleys are ok. His serve probably is his weakest side. Definitely he is much better than what his rankings says. He could easily be ranked in the top 300.

Hope you enjoyed the report.

Cheers

Thank you A LOT for the reports of the matches, especially on Gastăo. The huge talented that he has, is unquestionable. Is well know by world tennis since he is 14. The question is: Can he capitalize on his huge talent that he has? He's still young, but not that young, really. If he still want to be a great player he have to be way better in terms of power, but especially on mental game, and planing his season. He shouldn't be playing this challengers. He's ranking is like 800, so he barely can get into futures MD. He should, at first win futures, and then up his level to Challengers. Like Dimitrov did...

I agree about your meanings of Gastao Elias. It was the first time that I was able to saw him and I didn`t know that much of his performances in the past except that he was a player to watch some years ago but without big results as many players on the tour.

As you well said I agree with you that he should spend sometime on the Futures tour and then make the jump to the challenger tour. Tennis is so competitive on these days that players with a big talent keep struggling with themselves and are not able to make the jump to the Challenger tour. Unfortunately Elias is one of those cases as he has the tennis to play the Challenger tour.

He's been attacked in this last years by injuries, and that's not very helpful eihter. His carrer high (before the injuries) was well enough to enter some Challengers MD's, when he was like 16 or 17 years old. But now he have to know that he has to start from zero, once again. He need's a good coach. I don't know who's the coach, now, but surelly not the best for him, IMO. Sometimes you've got to make one step back, in order to make 2 steps further, in the future...

I agree with you. It may take him some time to return but as long as he has the game to be on the Challenger tour things will come easy. As you well said he needs a good working team and to be honest I don`t know who is his coach either

Pretty open draw with several players that should be the contenders for the title.

Fognini has a decent easy draw to reach the finals but that would be up how he feels like after a long flight from Rome and after winning in Naples this week. He should find some opposition from Machi in 2nd round and Aguilar in QF. Again, his tennis is one step above of the Challenger tour and he shouldn`t have troubles to win the title.

That would be interesting to see Del Bonis - Acasuso. None of them have been playing well lately and to see Arguello and his chances against Cervenak.
Alcaide shouldn`t have troubles to beat Velotti and possibly beat Delgado in 2nd round. Although Berlocq is my favourite to reach the SF on that 2nd quarter of the upper side of the draw. Cuevas will face a big test on Vasallo but if he beats him he has the draw open to reach the SF too.

I might attend a night session during the week. Will see which matches are scheduled.

Catalin Gârd def. Noviski 1-6 6-4 7-6(4) (2nd qualy round)

final qualifing round:
Catalin Gârd vs Guido Pella 2-5* (in play, livescore on bet365)

Gard fought back Noviski. He found more opposition than I would have expected.

Pella has more tennis than Gard and should qualify. But all is up to how Guido feels like...

Too bad Chucho withdrew. Guess with two withdrawals from three events, he's still not back physically. Hopefully he just keeps taking his time and comes back when he's ready.

However that is good news for Del Bonis who I think should make the SFs, at least.

Fabio v Machi R2 potentially, that would be a great match to watch. Winner definitely would be the favorite to make the SFs.

MVA v Cuevas R1 is a great rematch. Hopefully MVA is healthy and can threaten Cuevas unlike he did in Uruguay.

Nico absolutely needs to make the QFs, and with potential fatigue of Cuevas, and maybe him being down from losing in Uruguay, a final here is definitely possible if he finds his game.

The second quarter is pretty open, I can see a few of those guys making it through that section.

Good luck to my favorites!

Velotti should have some chances as Alcaide is fairly average off the serve. Also playing in Buenos Aires should bring extra motivation. A win wouldn't be surprising for me.

Brian in this match was very passive. He was waiting only for mistake from Spaniard side but it was a good tactic. Santiago was playing here strong with full risk but he was making to many UE's and serve this day was really bad. Whole match without any fireworks.

Dabul to me is a below-average clay court player. His game doesn't seem to really work on this surface. But Santi...................he needs to look into retirement in singles. It's really not working out. I don't think he cares, and also he looks worn out and just old physically. He still has some sparks where he shows game, but his heart isn't in it. Thank you! Yup, he took a long time off to heal that injury. I can't believe it still is an issue, this has been a long-term situation. Hopefully these days off will help him recover for Paraguay, he desperately needs some good results, I thought he would do well here this week, very disappointing news.

Aguilar's backhand is basically Massu level. Beyond liability level, it handicaps his entire game. He's also poor defensively, not a consistent returner, and has a poor second serve. He really doesn't have much game outside of that big forehand.

Machi was just the more solid and professional player. One more to go for the rematch.

Machi has been playing well the whole week long. I hope he can win the title as he deserves it. There was a lot of rain on the last days and the court was really slow which wasn`t a benefit for even Machi or Jorge Aguilar serves.

Aguilar is not a bad player, much better than the Future events he had been playing until last year. He can be a stable Challenger player for a couple of years.

Charly is going to find a difficult match on SF against Cuevas who is the favourite to win that match but he should be quite consistent against a player who doesn`t make many unforced errors.

That would be interesting to see a final match between Cuevas and Machi again.

Cuevas bt Berlocq 6-3 / 6-3

Charly made a lot of mistakes but Pablo`s deeper and aggresive shots were the key to win it easily.

Congrats for Pablo who is showing on the past weeks that his tennis is at the right level to play ATP tournaments again. Good luck for him :yeah:

What an incredible match between Gonzalez and JPB. Gonzalez was dead and buried at 6-3, 5-4 down with JPB serving for the match. Gonzalez broke back and won 8 games in a row, with it finishing 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 to Gonzalez.

Maximo was *3:5 0:40 down in 2nd set and it looked like it's over, but he fought up and made it 7:5! Then he easily took third set - 6:0! :worship::woohoo:

Absolutely amazing comeback from Machi. He's the Ferrer of the challenger tour, someone with extreme determination, heart, competitiveness and professionalism. What a great comeback from looking completely dead in the water. I'm so happy for him, especially given this is in Buenos Aires. I'm sure he felt the support from the crowd and just the atmosphere of playing in the home country raised him to high levels. Great win.

Pablo v Machi rematch!!

I watched almost the whole match where Brzezicki was leading 6-3/5-3 and I left home believing that Machi was finished as he looked during the 2nd set. To be honest I don`t know what to think.

Pablo was awful. Great victory for Machi again, this time at home in Argentina! What an amazing two weeks this has been for him, and very well deserved coming back from the ACL injury.

Machi was really solid and composed, and Pablo made a lot of errors, did not serve well, and didn't return consistently enough. Just not good from Pablo, but Machi once again proves his professionalism and grit. He's working his way back to the ATP tour where he belongs.

Congrats for Machi for the victory. I agree with Flyboy about his description of the match. Good for Machi as he is finding his best level again.

It might be a quite sore taste for Pablo to lose two finals in a row. I heard him yesterday and was definitely looking forward to win today. However, Pablo is showing some good tennis and the positive thing is that he is showing his best tennis again. Good luck for him in the next Challenger tournaments.
