Murray and Nadal won't win the US Open

I foresee another run to the semi-finals for Murray. I can't see Murray or Nadal being beaten on their way to the last four and I would just marginally go for Rafa in that semi contest.

I also believe that if Rafa beats Murray then he will go on and win the tournament because I don't think that at this stage of his career Roger is as good a player as Rafa.

Nadal has worked very hard this hardcourt season. He has been pretty clever - his knees look to be in better shape going into this event than for any other US Open. He also looked in terrific form against Murray in Canada, despite losing, and he has still to step it up to a Grand Slam level.

I think when Rafa - and indeed Roger - have taken on Murray in these big matches they show something different from even a Masters event and they can raise their game just a little bit more.

However, I still believe that if Murray can win here it will be the first of many Grand Slams for him.

Going back to Nadal, if you glance at his quarter of the draw it looks really tough, but the good thing is that a lot of those players have to play each other before they get to face him. David Ferrer, Ernests Gulbis, David Nalbandian and Fernando Verdasco... they're all tough. But Rafa won't have to play them all, so his run is actually not too bad.

I think Murray's quarter looks okay too. Stanislas Wawrinka is the first seed he will meet - the Swiss will be tough. He also has the big-serving Americans Sam Querrey and John Isner in his section, but home fans and big serves are not the type of things that get to Murray. People with powerful groundstrokes can cause him problems and I suppose Berdych looks like the one danger - beating the big Czech will be Murray's key to the semi-finals. Berdych is dangerous, having taken a big step-up in the last few months.

I think Murray is just about the fittest guy on the tour but one thing he doesn't enjoy is playing in intense heat - Murray supporters really don't want to see him getting involved in a couple of back-to-back matches when it is 35 degrees. He tends to make some poor choices when it is really hot.

Murray doesn't rate Federer as highly as Nadal. When Murray plays Federer outside of a Grand Slam, he beats him - and when it is a Grand Slam the opposite happens. So you couldn't bet against that happening again if they do both make the final.

However, Murray will not be frightened by Federer. I know he really thought he would win the Australian Open and it was a shattering blow when he didn't. Murray struggled to come to terms with that loss; he finds it easier come to terms with defeats to Rafa because I know he feels that Nadal is in a league above Federer at the moment

I'm not sure I would have it quite as cut and dry as that, but I think he might be right.

No one can survive Simon Reed's curse. No one:

Nadal is in the league above Federer? And Murray can beat Nadal in slams but not Fed. yet he is more afraid of Nadal. Hm.. Wait. How about Murray not reaching the semis?

This article does not come as a surprise really, given the extent to which Reed is confident in proclaiming to know things which he most probably does not. Sure, Nadal has had a far better season than Federer this year (though the opposite can be said since the start of the summer hard court season), but why does Reed profess to have knowledge with regards to the musings of Murray's mind?

Nadal being a better player is one thing. Being a "league above" is like comparing Blake to Federer. Federer & Nadal are much closer in level of play than Simon Reed wants to admit. Murray hates Roger for other reason and we all know why.

Simon used to be a bearable writer to read about tennis, but he has become such a fool. At least his commentary work is still decent. His tardness doesn't come out as much on TV as it does in writing.

That statement is just crazy. Why can't 2 of the 3 favourites win? I reckon Murray in current form has a slightly better chance than Nadal but never count him out.

I've no doubt that all the Federer fans will be reading this and saying: "You've always underestimated Federer and he has always proved you wrong" - and maybe he is going to do that again, but I have not seen any signs that would make me tip him in the lead-up to this event.

I think Murray has a shot, but I agree.. Even I doubt Rafa will win considering his current form on hard courts lately. It is not looking good, but I guess you never know..

Nadal was injured in Toronto, he will clinch the title this year.

Nadal or Murray has a better chance to win the US Open than Federer. That guy is nearly 30 someone should tell him he's a old man and should retire honourably to his kids.

must say, murray is in best position of all. it looks like dumping that coach did wonders for him. frankly, if he can dodge big guys and scrape through a 5-setter or two he'll win this shit. if he plays nadal, I have little doubt he will win. against federer he really should have learned how to deal with him in the finals. although it is tricky cause the surface is much faster than in australia and it suits free-flowing wodger. murray MUST keep his cool cause this is the best position he's been in for a slam in a while. if he plays djokovic (I hope), Im guessing its slightly in his favor though djoker can pummel him in 'fine weather'.

Reed desperately wants to pick Murray as the favourite yet again but having been wrong so many times, he doesn't dare, so he's added in Nadal as a caveat.

In reality this is the most open USO we've had for a while. Murray could win it but so could a number of others. As someone else said, if you held a gun to my head I'd say Federer but I'm not at all confident and the longer his career goes on, the less confident I get.

if we get a murray vs nadal semi, i believe nadal must go to murray's forehand all the time, he makes more errors off that wing and it breaks down under pressure.
murray's backhand is his best shot, its technically solid and holds up under pressure.

rafa must do what he does in gasquet matches, attack the forehand side.
