Nice win for Stakhovsky. He was two points away from defeat twice this week (Luczak, Baghdatis). He should make some progress in bigger tournaments, tricky player, his 4th ATP title despite he had negative w/l record before New Haven :o

even though the scoreline was close, i never felt like istomin had a chance in this match after the break in the 2nd set. He seemed to have lost a lot of energy after that point.

Stakhovsky, when in form and filled with confidence, is one of the most fun players to watch on the tour. I love his variety, his strategy, but he needs to start showing this kind of play in the first two rounds of a tournament where he struggles most. It was a joy to watch his serves, drop shots, and volleys

On the sidenote - very good English language skills from Sergyi during the ceremony. Does he have something in common with some US based academies or just he learnt English well ?

Stakhovsky is 8-0 once he reaches an ATP semi-final. He won s-Hertogenbosch and New Haven but went 1-6 in between. Three titles in the last 12 months (also St. Petersburg) is incredible, funny he can't be more consistent or win more at bigger events yet.

He was trained in Ukraine and Slovakia only, as I know. He is sufficiently good educated

He is a man of mood. I'm afraid he will so emotionally exhausted after this win that he takes a pause for a few weeks as it was in similar cases previously. Up and down, not stable

I have to agree with you on how handles tennis emotionally. Luczak is a terrible draw for Sergiy due to their recent meeting, so I am glad he won this tourny at least. I wouldn't be surprised if he comes out flat on monday or tuesday.

Another victory for Stakhovsky. Still I can`t find on him anything extraordinary but when he is in the zone it seems to be that nothing can`t stop him (at least in ATP 250 :) ).

In the first set Stak attacked over Istomin backhand and Denis showed no troubles at all. On the 2nd Stak started to play a more aggresive game and attacked over Denis forehand including dropshots, some good serves and some S&V which changed things for good for him. That change the match to Stak`s hands. At the same time Denis seemed to lose energy on the 2nd and 3rd set.

It wasn`t an extraordinary tennis match but enough for Stakhovski to win. Congrats! :yeah:

Great :yeah:

Here's another guy I will try to watch more often, it took some time but I discovered a very entertaining player.

Florian Mayer, Stakhovsky, Stepanek... tennis needs those guys.

“I have no idea [why I have a perfect record in finals]," Stakhovsky said. "I'm really happy to keep the score this way, to be able to be the winner of this match today. As I believe everybody saw, it was really more playing on nerves. There were a lot of unforced errors. There were really a lot of good rallies, and I hope it was really enjoyable tennis we played. I have to say it definitely wasn't our best tennis from both of us. But we were trying as hard as we could. Definitely we were fighting for everything.
Stakhovsky, who had to win two four matches in three days – including two wins Thursday as organisers played catch-up after rain – said: “It was really an exhausting week for me. A lot of three sets. A lot of tie-breaks. Just a lot of time on court. Just now I have to get myself together and get ready for the US Open. I'm really glad to win this title. It pushed me to another level again. But I just need to think forward again and get ready.”

Feel bad for Istomin but Stakhovsky is certainly a joy to watch. Hope he can become a top 20 player one day, would be great.

This dude is a breath of fresh air.. It's CLASSIC TENNIS the way it should be played, and how i was taught the game in the 80s!

So true. Nadal achieved more than Querrey and Stakhovsky combined before turning 19 (two Masters Series, 4 other titles including Barcelona, Davis Cup, top 5 ranking, win over world number one, final of Miami).
