New Haven R2: Dolgopolov def Blake 6-4 6-2

Citation from yesterday thread (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?t=167233&page=3):
Got a question for ya, Jacques_Ukraine!
The odds I've seen on Blake/Dolgo have favored Blake tonight in New Haven ..... Why is that do you think? Most regular people seem to think Dolgo will win!

My answer was the following:
I'm not gambler but know there were many strange bets around Dolgo matches previously. I don't want to believe in some tricks, I think Dolgo was and still remain unstable. In addition, he is of lazy man type or, in other words, very rationalist If matters go wrong or he had bad mood, he could tank the match, at least we saw such cases previously. Of cource, this year he shows great progress in stability and confidence, but don't insure against breakdowns
Regarding today match, I guess folks were impressed by 1st round win of Blake too...

Today win was easy... Dolgo mainly struggled with himself only, Blake was heavyish and slow

blake is the town's schizophrenic. He was ready to go last night, rain delay sapped his energy, and today he didn't give a shit. Save that mental fortitude for Courier and Chang on the senior's tour.

Dolgopolov is fun to watch. Inconsistent, yes, but has a good mentality and exciting tennis. Sure, he only played a struggling Blake, but it was always clear who had the upper hand. Now he'll have to play another match today?

yes, he will play troicki later on

According to the order of play, he faces troicki right after mayer and de bakker get done.

We already see the picture:

In the following week (or right after this awfull awfull performance, who knows), Blake will make a press release stating this "...WILL BE his last USOpen".

The New York Crowd will go Ape Shi*, when they give him Center Court on his first round match, which he will lose.

Then, we're all gonna put back our focus on Fed's imminent USopen win (ok maybe that part is inacurate but there's hope)

Blake's best result of the year is a QF of a "250" :o

For those that are Fed fans, sure.

Never cared for Blake but I'm starting to feel a little bad for him.

In all seriousness, I do think Blake still has it in him to be competitive on the tour, but his mental deficiencies are really hurting him now. Back in his prime, he made up for his stupidity with athleticism, and he can't afford to do that anymore. Maybe match play will help him, but he is too fragile right now to be considered top 50.

I kinda feel sorry for James though. :( About to call it a career ?

Blake has now lost 4 1st round losses. How does this type of behavior represent that he is coming back as he keeps stating to the media and press? I doubt this guy will ever come back, if he really was coming back, this would have been the tourny to do it at.

It doesn't matter the draw ever anymore, he will continue to lose. USO last tourny for James, oh well. I pray Stockholm organisers will not give him a WC into their tourny. This guy just doesn't seem to give a shit anymore.

Blake should hang up his racket and call it a career. I'm not seeing any energy, motivation or dynamic from him. He's horrible to watch at this point.

I just watched his 2005 match against Agassi on Monday. When he was on, I loved it how he smoked the ball. Let's be real though, his lack of mental strength has been a strong hindrance on his career.

What do you mean by mental strength exactly?

Are you basically saying that his game lacks variety / too one-dimensional / no "plan B"?

Just a ball basher?

For instance, today's match. I watched him last night stepping on the court and he was focused and crisp from the warmups on. He steps on the court today and it looks like he doesn't want to be there. He got himself involved in a lot of 30-30 games today, but he gave dolgo so many freebies because he went for some insane shots. If he was stronger mentally, he would've tried to extend the point longer instead of trying to hit a running forehand down the line considering his form.

Very expected result. This is a bad match-up for James in the best of times, and at this point Alex is simply the better player. I truly wonder if next week is the last we'll see of James. Too bad to see him reduced to this, but congrats to Dolgo for taking advantage of the situation.

Expected, wonder if Dolgo could get his first title...

Disappointing for James, I hope he gets a good deal of energy from the crowd at the Open because it's going to be a struggle

True, but James' game has never been about extending points, it has always been going for winners. Also, he felt pressured because Dolgo was attacking him, which is something James doesn't cope with well. Alex was attacking him and he couldn't handle it, and his movement is so reduced now he clearly has no confidence in his ability to stay in points with his mobility issues. He's heavy legged and doesn't have good footwork and that was exposed. Basically, he played someone who is a better version than he is, someone who plays the power game but in a younger and fresher body with more explosiveness. There was nothing he could do.

By the way, James still isn't healthy everyone. He's admittedly not playing well or at a fitness level required to give his best. His body is breaking down slowly but surely. So the lack of energy or physical spark is connected to that, and the colder damp heavy weather compounds that. I personally think he should give it a go next season to see what he can do when he's actually able to give 100% of himself in matches.

I thought your argument was basically that Blake has always been stupid, but he was able to make up for this when he was younger with pure athleticism.

Flyboy, you nailed it perfectly for today's match. It certainly appeared that he was overmatched even though he was within striking distance.

I should've clarified on my mental deficiency comment, I just felt that he doesn't really think clearly like other top players do. If he just processed his points better before rushing the serve then maybe he could've been a more successful pro.

Tough draw from JB, Dolgopolov is a red hot player right now, he lost 64 in the third to two top 10 players Berdych and Ferrer in his last two matches. Blake may be at the end now.

Blake's "mental deficiency" is that he has a tendency to pout like a child when things aren't going his way.

This result was expected, Dolgopolov is more capable of hitting winners than Blake at this stage, and he's more consistent.

Riba's result yesterday makes his a prime contender in that least-talented-in-top-100 thread.

It's good that Dolgopolov is chalking up wins, but I hope he doesn't overplay this season. It would be a bad mistake at this stage in his career.

Really sad for Blake. I thought he might be able to get some respectable results this summer at the least.. Well I hope he still continues to enjoy tennis and play a couple fun matches.

For sure, especially what he has been through.
