IMO, i think he would get to the second round . As for winning....not a chance there

He's 39 years old, 5 years older than the oldest player in the draw, Rainer Schuettler. With a nice draw (e.g. someone ranked 90 odd), he might win a round.

Well we all saw him take Federer down in that exhibition not that long ago....so on a given day he could beat any of these players. But he couldn't win....too many sets and matches for an old man in today's tennis.

Exhos are the benchmark these days.

maybe... but don't forget that the USO is (1) best of 5 sets (2) 2 weeks 7 matches affair.... sampras probably will win couple of matches in the early rounds assuming he doesn't meet a top 10 opponent...

He would have had a reasonable chance (say 10%) to win New Haven this week, but US Open no chance.

No chance in 1st round!

Better than most people think, but we'll never know.

With a favourable draw the third round or even the fourth would have been possible.

Poll: whose double account is the OP?

1. theseth's.
2. 2003's.

He would win by default, as everyone else would immidiately withdraw in fear when his WC is announced.

That's 15 slams, bitches.

2nd or 3rd round if he's lucky!

Well, not if he's lucky.

a) He hasn't played professionally since 2002

b) he's not interested in playing anyway because he would have to get in shape and play a few matches before the tournament to get match fit as well

So its a pointless question in the first place.

At least Sampras hasn't done a Lance Armstrong or Michael Schumacker and come out of retirement - he's left it to the youngsters and quite right.

yeah, he is smart, not foolish like Lance or Michael, to come back again, and caused embarassement by not winning any more

he'd lose his first round 1, 0 and 1 to Jan Hajek
