Cincinnati F - King of Cincinnati Federer outlasts Fish 6/7, 7/6, 6/4

Dramatic match. Fish served extremely well out of trouble on numerous occasions. As expected however, his forehand was not there when he needed it. If I remember correctly, he didn't hit one forehand winner until midway through the 2nd set.

Federer had 4 break point chances in the 1st set but blew them with strange decisions, and he should have taken advantage of his lead in the 1st breaker.

2nd set was bit closer in terms of service games, however, Fish had one break point chance and screwed it with a forehand.

In the 3rd set, Fish had to hit a lot of 2nd serves and finally that got him into trouble.

Stats will be up in a sec-

Unlucky Mardy. He gave it his all, somehow stayed in the match all the way. In the end though his groundstrokes just were not good enough and Fed was troubling himslef more than Fish was giving him trouble. Fed still looks less than convincing but maybe this win can give him the confidence to lift his game for New York.

Fish's forehand held up very well... I think he was given a bit of a heavy almost mishit type of ball on that shot. People on here expect every player to hit every shot perfect or they say someone's game sucks. Both Federer and Nadal have made some HORRID shots in the last few weeks. It happens.

Whereever Federer goes, the drama follows.

Good win for Fed; he should be pleased but may be not too happy with how he played. He is passive for sure. he should also get better with second serve returns.
Anyway, a win is a win and after everybody has written him off AGAIN, he'll go into USO as a favourite (or at least UP THERE!!).

At least Federer can provide us with entertaining and nail biting matches this year :p

His returns weren't the greatest, but it usually is a problem anyways. I think the issue was whether to slice or hit over the ball and he was confused how to handle Mardy.

The real issue was his volleys. He was way too careless on them today.

Big congrats to Fed for defending Cincy. It was a bit mediocre match with Fish being tight and Fed return of serve not up to the task and being somewhat passive off the ground(compared to his recent matches with Marcos and especially Davydenko)but it had drama, was very tight until the end.

Kudos to Fish, great tourney for him but once again he fell on the finish line in Cincy like he did against Roddick in 2003,feel a bit bad for him, hope he'll have some more opportunities to grab a masters title.

Great tennis at times, scratchy tennis at times. Mardy's forehand broke down too often in critical moments. Roger's backhand had it's issues, but he hit some great ones to offset. Roger did well to take the net away from Mardy by being aggressive with his approaches. Both guys served well (and neither guy returned particularly well) but Mardy was too inconsistent with his serve percentage, and it caught up to him in the end.

All in all, it was a nice match, Mardy certainly had his chances to take this in 2 but Roger stepped it up as champions do when need be. Congrats to him for defending the title. He does need to play better than this at the US Open, however.

He has more slams than any player and won this match today and yet people are still saying that his game was awful!!!??? That's nuts... Should he have gone for winners from bad positions and just lost the match? If that is what you want then watch Tsonga, Gonzalez, Blake or Gulbis. I love how if Fish had won, people would be praising him for being super clutch and a mentally tough player. How he gutted and fought his way through fatigue to beat Roddick and Federer.

Federer wins a tight final, that he easily could have lost where he pulls out a bunch of clutch serves and a gutsy tiebreak where he really went for winners and people poo poo him for not playing up to his potential.

I guess you simply can't win if your name is Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer.

Atrocious 2nd serve returns from Fed. What happened to the chip and charge that Fed employed so beautifully against Baggy? I know Fish has a much better kicker than Baggy but come on.

Fish has had a fabulous US open series, and did very well today so he must like his chances of going deep in USO.

I wouldnt be getting too overexcited if I was a Fed fan. Fed got bye to QFs and beat Davydeko (not fully fit yet), Baghdatis and Fish. he is favorite for USO imo only because Murray has never won a slam before.

Congratulations to Federer. It was nice to see another little piece of tennis history being made, but Federer didn't half make it more tricky than it had to be for himself. Even though he made quite a few errors and got his tactics wrong, if Federer had lost today's match, it would have been because of those squandered break points in the first set and failing to capitalise on Fish's nerves right at the very beginning.

Fish has had a good week and will be looking for a decent run at the US Open. Unfortunately, as there's a few guys in the top twenty etc beginning to get their act together, like Fish, Baghdatis and Nalbandian, we might see a few of them exit sooner than they really deserve.

Federer was awful with his return game today. Part of that can be credited to Fish's second serve, but how many times did Federer look to run around and hit a forehand off the return today? I can only think of two. And he sliced tons of second serves long (on break points and deuce points no less) - inexcusable. He did have some great first serve returns in the first set today that reminded me of his glory days. All in all, this was a scratchy match with some brilliance mixed in with some so-so stuff. Full credit for pulling off the win though, these are the types of matches Roger's been losing all year.

Also, Federer has completely forgotten how to use his aggressive slice. His backhand was misfiring fairly frequently today, yet only occasionally did he try and take a neutral ball up the line with the slice. I hope someone reminds him that he still has this shot in his arsenal and that hitting the slice also tends to improve his topspin backhand consistency.

Fish has become a much better player with his increased mobility, but in the process he's also become less dangerous. His shots don't have the same sting they used to and I'm not sure if it's because he just wasn't releasing the trigger today or if he's just lost a little something in his shots. The match today reminded me a lot of how Roddick plays. Smart tennis, constantly attacking the Federer backhand, but no real aggression off the ground. It's a great improvement for him and hopefully he can keep it up, but I'd like to see him be more aggressive since he really has a great net game.

Quite below average from Federer, I thought he was going to lose.
It is tough to play when one is serving so well as Mardy, but the better player won.
At times, it looked like all serve mug contest.

Pretty much did everything he could to lose the match, like squandering countless of points every time he got to 30-30 on Fish serve as he did yesterday against Baghdatis, and didn't really look to care too much until Fish got close to break him in the second and third set. Fish fought hard and would have been a worthy winner, he just couldn't manage to find that decisive break. Still think Murray will be the player to beat at the USO. Federer needs to step up, still too many unnecessary mistakes.

Congratulations for Roger for this new victory and reaching Bjorn Borg with 63 titles among the players that won more tournaments on the tour.

It was not an extraordinary performance displayed by Roger but it is his first MS since an year ago and that what it counts after all.

Sometimes Roger reminds me the one of 2002/2003 that was mentally not so strong and with many troubles on his backhand but it`s always a pleasure to see him winning :yeah:.

On the otherhand Mardy played a good match too and could had been the winner aswell. It`s really remarkable how he developed his mental side and his positive attitude on court which is reflected on his winning streak : Since the tournament of Queens he won two ATP tournaments and was the runner up on other two among six tournaments played. I`m very happy for him :rocker2:

It felt like there were so many facepalm moments this match by Roger, particularly when he had opportunities like the BPs in the first set but really what else is new. Serving was awesome though. Must admit I didn't think he'd manage it but in the end he created one opportunity too many for himself and managed to take advantage. Very very happy with this win regardless!

Edit:

From the press conference: "Yeah, I could have sometimes not messed up some stupid, easy volleys I had. Then again, he did well to get it down there and keep the ball in play." Well at least he realises it :p

Real men wear pink. :yeah:

It felt like there were so many facepalm moments this match by Roger, particularly when he had opportunities like the BPs in the first set but really what else is new. Serving was awesome though. Must admit I didn't think he'd manage it but in the end he created one opportunity too many for himself and managed to take advantage. Very very happy with this win regardless!

Speaking of pink, Goodall made a funny comment when Roger sneaked into the net against Fish saying that Mardy must of been surprised seeing a big pink man in front of him. :worship:

Federer peaking at the right time. Murray will have to wait until next year to win his first slam..

took out that trash fish.
rafa is finished, his number 1 ranking lead has shrunk big time.

i wouldnt be surprised if federer snatched the year end number 1 from rafa.

Specially considering Rafa is unable to win HC titles anymore:o:wavey:

Oh really? Rafa defended his points in Canada/Cinci (540, same as last year), so he doesn´t lose a single point from his previous sum.

Fed improved in Canada, but simply repeated results in Cinci. So last year he made 1,180 points, this year 1,600. That's a global improvement for Fed of only 420 points, not much when the difference between them is as large as at present.

That is hardly an achievement, considering last year he was coming from injury and many doubts. This year he is at his peak again, coming off wins the whole clay court season and Wimbledon, yet he could not deliver on hardcourts, that´s a fact.

What Federer just did was huge, after what happened at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. Just imagine Nadal doing that last year after his injury and setbacks since Madrid last year.
Plus Federer is not on the run for number one anymore, that´s not even his goal anymore, and he is not in physical condition to endure a full season with a lot of events anymore.

FIsh played well enough to win this match. He just blinked once on serve and it cost him. Good stuff this week. He needs to stop serving to fed's FH so much and work on some sting on that BH volley.
Fed played well today and seems to be playing himself back into form. Some patchy stretches at times but overall solid tennis.

Congrats to Roger but he's definitely half a step slower. Mardy's serve and new fitness were great but JesusFed would commit way less errors. Anyway, it's a logic process and being top10 until the olympic Games and winning one, maybe two slams is a realistic goal. Kudos to him .. a top 3 player for 7 years

Fish's FH is such a clown shot. It is going to continue to hold him back despite spending so much time working on it. It's just pathetic at times.

Dear Paul Anacone,

Please help Roger see the error of his tactics so that he can continue to win aand play at a high level. Remind him to stop chipping second serves to opponents backhands like Murry, Joke and Fish. They then hit the ball hard cross court to Roger's backhand and put him immediately on the defensive. Please help to stand back on more second serve returns and hit more forehands or topspin backhands. That will at least give him a fighting chance in the point. Remind him that the best second serve returns are manny times hard and down the middle of the court. When he is serving a second serve to the add side and the player has astrong two hand backhand try not to repaetedly serve there as they hit hard croos court to your backhand and once again put you on the defensive. Remind him that his forhand, serve and volleys are still one of the best in the game and if he makes these adjustments along with getting to net more he should win more consistently and easier.

Maybe it's just me. I think ROger's serve saved him this time (especially in this match). He made tooo many errors espeically on fish 2nd serve return. If he wants to win 17th slam he needs to improve otherwise murray/djokovic..or even an in-form berdych would eat him alive

Borg's 63 career titles is a joke. ATP counts him inter alia "Pepsi Grand Slam" which was a joke tournament (4 players, semifinals and final and that's all) :o IMO Borg won 57 tournaments given today's standards.

Man, I know how bad it is to lose no matter what, especially in a final of a tournament as I've had some of those :(

Even though he isn't crying his heart out or anything, just seeing him with the runner-up makes you feel for him along with all the other pros finishing runner-up in general. Tennis is such a cruel sport sometimes.

That's correct. COMPLETE lack of opportunism of second serves.

"Eat him alive" is a little bit uncalled for really. Even though Fed lost the first set, I thought he was really doing an incredible job of being completely dominant on serve. In fact, serving like that, I'd say he has a shot against anybody on their best day.

That being said....Roger NEEEEDDDDDDSSSSS to figure out is F***** returns !

Man...I sware to god, its like he's not even trying sometimes. One or 2 mistakes of the return almost EVERY game.

Also, what's been annoying me lately is...when he gets into this weird "soft serves" mode. Some second serves at 85 mpH ?? Didn't really happen a whole lot this week, but in Toronto it was almost embarassing.

Fish lost. Tennis won.

Everyone is happy.

How is Fish not "tennis" as some people say. Who is "tennis" to the people that say this???? It seems no one is. Servers aren't, serve and volleyers aren't, baseliners aren't, shotmakers aren't. What is this ONE dimension that some people think is the whole game? I don't get it.

Fish played great, Roger too, great match. A pleasure to watch.

A lot of criticism of Roger. He looked tired - dark around the eyes- and he had played 8.5 matches in 2 weeks. Had he won Toronto and then Cincinnati, everyone would have been saying how he was back to his 2006 form. He is 29, not 25... didnt have that much of a turnaround from his match againts Baghdatis and it looked revoltingly hot and humid. All of that must make his game less sharp...return of serve worse.. etc etc. He looked pretty good to me.

Nice to see Federer working hard taking this title. It's good to see him trying so hard to maintain his level of aggression nowadays because at this point in career even just a little concentration lapse can result in a dramatic drop in game play. Because of slowly deteriorating footwork, his balance and timing of the ball is no where of what it use to be, but atleast he is trying his best to continuously go for shots. Title well deserved, hope he may win the US Open

Even those dont really match today's standards. Prior to the Masters Series, it was only the slams where all the top guys were present (and it wasnt exactly rare to miss slams with flimsy reasons, either). Nowadays they dont have too much choice, only the minor tournies, much harder to rack up titles.

Yes! I remember Andrew Castle writing Roger off after the 2009 Australian Open final. He and some other TV commentators said his days were gone. That is why I admire Roger so much - he responds with his tennis and results. I hope he or Andy Murray win the US Open.
