Yes, he's a bit older, but he's in form now...

After winning 3 Futures in a row(Italy F13, Serbia F2, Austria F1), he qualified for two challengers... Firstly for San Marino, beating Naso in qualies, but losing in R1 to first seed Potito Starace in straight sets.. Next week, he qualified for Trani, where he defeated third seed Paolo Lorenzi in first round(63 36 60), but he lost to Flavio Cipolla in 2nd round after big fight(46 64 46)... Next week, he'll play in Geneve MD(without playing qualies!) and he'll play against first seed Paolo Lorenzi, again.. Can he do it twice in a row? :D

mad run. He's well inside the top 300 with that win, actually not far off 250. If he has maybe one more successful tourney in the next couple of months then he'll have a chance of AO qualifiers which would be great. That said, he's got some decent points to come off before the end of the season, so actually, he probably needs a couple of good (QF or higher) performances.

Great stuff though. Good luck tomorrow Nikola

Another great win for him today in the first round of the Ljubljana challenger - again, playing Lorenzi, top seed, in the first round, and again, coming through in straight sets. Decent draw as well, could well have a run here if he can keep it going :)

Ciric is in the quarter finals in Ljubljana, and has taken the first set 6/1 against Galvani. He's defending SF points this week as he made Palermo challenger semi final with the same drop date last season, but that was his major points to defend for the remainder of the season. Another good tournament after this one and he could be pushing on towards top 200.

Nikola has just 14 points to defend till the end of the year, and looks as though he'll be playing in most of the South American challenger swing.

He's playing this week in Beunos Aires and has got off to another fantastic start beating 7th seed and another player ranked 100 places higher - Ramon Delgado 6-2, 6-3. That already gives him 8 points. He can guarantee making the 6 remaining points if he wins in the second round, probably tomorrow, and he's playing a wild card who got a walkover in Round 1, so it's an opportunity for him, for sure. Another win would also, for a couple of weeks at least, get him inside that top 250....

Well done Niko

Tristanslav

Ciric now through to quarters, 6-1, 7-6 against Velotti. It means he's pretty much guaranteed a season ending rank inside the top 250, as he can only lose 14 points off of his total between now and then. This tournament sees him win at least 18. Berlocq next, will be tough, but he's showing great form, with a few top 100 wins in recent weeks.
Probably now has a serious shot of the top 200 before year end, considering his form. He's entered into all the SA clay court challengers.

Yeah, i know what you mean, although the streak he's on in clay - lets not forget he had good form in the european swing also - it makes sense for me that he's continuing the run. He's maybe 2 good tournaments away from being well inside the cut-off for AO qualies at year end, whereas defeats in qualifying/first rounds of 250 tournaments wouldn't give him that points boost. It'll be interesting time when the new season starts, thats for sure. At Niko's age, he really needs to break into top 150-200 soon if he's going to have any chance of mixing it with the big boys for a little while. :)

More points on the board last night for Nikola, comfortably putting away Martin Alun 6/4, 6/3 in Paraguay. Tough second round match against either Santiago Ventura, or Brian Dabul but each of these wins pushes him a little closer to the top 200. Another excellent serving display on the clay yesterday - 9 aces and only 2 break points faced. On the Alun serve, he had 12 break point opportunities over the course of the match, which took an hour 25. Well done Nikola.

Astonishing win. This is some run he's on. He'll face Galdon in the quarter finals, which is a match he definately has a chance of winning. Good news is, after the tough 2 hour battle with Dabul, he has another day off today, so good for recovery. 25 aces yesterday, which, on clay in a 3 set match is a hell of a feat. I'd like to see him on grass!!

Win yesterday takes him to a projected ranking of 236. A win against Galdon will see him up to 213. It's not impossible, in fact, for him to climb into the top 200 this week, although, he would probably need to win the event - a runner up spot would likely leave him 3 or 4 places short of the 200. There's another 6 weeks left of the South American clay court challenger swing, i'm guessing he'll play at least 4 of those events, and in this form, well, i'd say top 200 by the end of the season is the minimum he can manage.

Keep it going Niko.....:worship:

Ivīe seen him play 3 times, an tall player, who isnīt the fastest on court maybe thatīs why he do his best results on clay. Plays an typical clay game, a lot of spin down the baselines and got an huge serve as his best weapon. Would be interesting to see him on an faster surface as carpet, hardcourt and grass next year. Not sure, he's not playing in Columbia the following week either, so maybe, he's cutting the swing short. There's a couple more events after then, and he has a couple of point slots to fill in his ranking points, so I hope that's not it for the season.

Back to last night, another great win as you say. Although these wins are becoming more 'routine' than great now. What a run he's on :)

He plays in Cancun in week 46, he has automatic entry into it. Nothing listed for the 2 weeks in between, maybe he'll rest. Yep. Which puts him up to 197 with no adjustments for players around those places. I would have a look and see if any just above him have points to come off, or those below are gaining points this week, but i don't have time today :)

Anyway, it seems pretty sure he'll be in the top 200 at year end, which, lets be honest, is a magnificent achievement

And even more encouraging is that he has no points whatsoever to defend until May, and even then it's very small amount. Genuine chance to get up inside the top 150 if he has a couple of good tourneys early on. I wonder if he'll stick to clay in 2011?

Ad Wim

Very good run, but we shouldn't get too excited I think. His best win was against Dabul. He played the worst challengers, and did very well on those. Don't know how he will fare in 2011 if he decides to play bigger challengers. I hope he decides to play more on faster surfaces with that serve.

But glad he is in the top 200. He is pretty old, where was he all the time? With that serve he should have gotten some better results than he had the last years.

Well, his first ever GS qualy draw is out, and it's Ryan Sweeting. Tough one, but if he could get through it, then it's the toughest match he'll play in qualifying. The other seeded player in his section is Lukas Rosol, so the match against Sweeting represents his chance for me. Win that, and he's got an excellent chance of the main draw.
And, he has beaten higher ranked players, on clay, where his serve should, in theory be less effective.

Needs to be cranking that serve up to the maximum tomorrow morning. First up, court 5. About 11pm CET.

Good win indeed. Why didn't he play for so long?
Last match was AO qualis, that's a month ago. Was he waiting for clay court challengers?

Not sure - but it follows his pattern last year - he barely played in the first 5 months, and then had a very heavy second half of the season. I was a little surprised he didn't have a look at the South American events and challengers at this point in the season. The nice thing for him is, he reall has nothing to defend until the summer. If he can get one or two semi final appearances or better in challengers in the next 2-3 months, he could be pushing the top 150 by the time we reach Roland Garros.

Maybe he treats January as his off season - he played until pretty late in 2010 - until the middle of December.....

Anyway, he's on the list for Tangiers next week (pretty much the same list as this week, so a good draw, and could be another little boost for him), but then nothing else that I can see. It'll be interesting to see if he sticks to challengers for now, or if he moves up to full ATP qualies as we enter the European clay court swing in a month or so. I'm guessing he'd have a decent chance of getting a qualification place in some of the lesser 250 events.

I'm still bemused as to why he plays so much clay though, with that serve. Another 10 aces yesterday. Must be huge on a hardcourt or grass!

Ad Wim
02-15-2011, 11:50 AM
Yeah, maybe that's it, he just really only wants to play on clay. That could be a reason why he hasn't played for a month, there were no challengers on clay. Just one in Colombia, but you don't travel to SA for just that.

But it stays strange that he is only playing on clay with that serve. If you look at a guy like Raonic, who can win an ATP tournament with that serve.

It's not going to be easy, but i give him more chance than you. His serve is looking back to it's best today, 22 aces in a clay court match is monster. He served at 70% and won like 85% of his 1st serve points - and Galung is a pretty solid player at this level.

Yep. It was a tight game with Skugor, only 3 breakpoints in total in the whole match - Skugor took his in the first set. A little rest will do him some good, he must consider this a genuine chance now to reach a first grand slam. He's a bit young to break Dusan's world record, but it would be a nice achievement for him anyway. I'll definately watch him in the Wimbledon qualies though at Roehampton. I've played on those courts, and they are QUICK!! Even I could serve an ace or two on those courts, and i'm awful!

Great win for Ciric- Monster today, 7-5, 5-7,7-5 against Janowicz, 7th seed! 2 seeds beaten this week, SE clearing for Nottingham, unless he withdraws, and a top 180 ranking place next week. Only 15 aces today though :)

Terrible draw for Nikola in wimbledon quallies, he will meet second seed Lukas Kubot. Hopefully Nikola have an amazing day with his serve, so maybe he has an chance. Bozoljac draw sixth seed Darcis, not an easy one their either. But hey? Who wanna face two big serves on grass? :D

Niko lost fairly comfortably yesterday, I watched his match, and then the end of Ilija's. Nikola put down a few big serves, but just not consistently enough, and never really got near Kubot. He moves very badly, especially on grass. Ilija was unlucky, went down 13-11 in the final set :( Only Krunic left in the girls section for Serbian qualifiers, and she has a very tough opener too.

What a win today over Simon Gruel for Nikola Ciric in Germany. Into the semi final, and another tough one against Andreas Beck. He needed this run though, he has a lot of points to defend from September onwards, so needs to bag a few now. 10 aces, and 78% per cent first serves in (winning 89% of those).

Great stats on clay.

Absolutely SwedSerb. Against a player ranked 70 in the world, this was an excellent win. double figure ace count as well. These results are so important for his ranking because he had that run at the end of last year and still has many points to defend from 2010.

Did you see his ace count in his semi final with Beck last week by the way? 23 aces in a 2 set match that he lost, on clay! Incredible....

Anyone got any idea if Nikola is playing any events soon? He played Australian qualies and hasn't been seen since, and isn't on the list for anything in the next 3 weeks....

Did this last year as well, seems a strange tactic.

Nikola have just won two Challengers in a row in doubles, Sevilla with Pashanski and Trnava with Tosic.
