In the 8-man 2010 US Open American playoff tournament, 1 seed Tim Smyczek has clinched a spot in the main draw for the first time in his career.

The field was...
(1) Smyczek
(2) Ryan Harrison
(3) Greg Ouellette
(4) Andrea Collarini
(5) Alex Domijan
(6) Austin Krajicek
(7) Steve Johnson
(8) Chase Buchanan

Smyczek beat Buchnan and Domijan on his way to the final where he took care of Harrison in straight sets 64 64 64. Both Smyczek and Harrison have secured spots in the qualy draw.

Smyczek has had a great summer, headlined by qualifying for the LA Farmers Classic, beating Gabashvili first round, then taking a set off top seed world #4 Andy Murray.

Congrats to Tim

Steve lost to Ryan Harrison in the first round of this. He was 7 seed. He got a wildcard to the qualifying draw of the Open I think.

So he will still maybe be able to at least qualify? Sounds okay, love to see my USC guys up there at USO.

Yeah you can check the USO thread to see if he got a USO qualy wildcard. I am pretty sure he did get one so he'll have another go at it. I'd like to see him qualify

Yes, Steve Johnson received a qualy WC. In fact, all but two of the qualy wildcards were awarded to current or former college players. The exceptions are Jordan Cox and Andrea Collarini. Hopefully they all put up a good showing.

And Cox is going pro. Not attending college after graduating last year.

Is Harrison getting Young's WC?

Or is he going to play the normal qualis?

Ryan can't seem to find a way to win close matches. I don't think he's developed his game completely yet so this Qualy WC is good for him

4-6 4-6 4-6 is a straight sets loss. Not overly easy for Smyczek, but not close either.

Congrats to Tim on the victory, very much deserved and well earned. He's really improved this season to become a good player on the professional circuit, and with the summer he's had, a decent run at the Open isn't out of the question. Good job to Ryan also for making the final but he didn't quite have enough. Now, Ryan is going to be hoping Don makes the MD directly.
