I gave the umpire permission to bitchslap this prick called Roddick

For once, I really wanted Andy to lose for the way he treated pretty much everyone on-court, even crapping on Soderling's nice gesture to explain his reason for challenging, which was 100% Soderling's right to do so.

You know something is wrong when your Davis Cup coach says "Wow, okay he's out of line."

Soderling was finding his range in the 3rd set. An awesome acefest for Robin from 0-40 down to save 5, yep, five break points. He also saved 5 Match Points as well

Also, Andy's Backhand is better than his Forehand. It's gotten way more decieving than the past Roddick BH. If he flatten his forehand out or at least relearn to pull the trigger, he can have an insane groundstroke game /with/ versatility.

I also need the 2nd set tiebreak score, please. I had forgotten it and would like to put it down.

Good though ugly win for Andy. And his tennis wasn't pretty either.

Meanwhile, Soderling may have bumped up against a glass ceiling. He certainly merits his high ranking. But his nature is to doubt himself when it counts.

The 2nd set TB was classic Roddick banter with the umpire bitching about the time it took to challenge, when the linesperson didn't make a call and Söderling successfully challenged. The umpire didn't exactly help the situation, considering the rule says timely manner thing then it's subjective, and a time limit can't be imposed.

Roddick had lots of break points and Toad saved 5 match points. It was 9-7 in the 2nd serve TB.

Second set tiebreak was 9-7

Took Andy 6 MP's but he finally wins it. Soderling wasn't very good for much of it, constantly pressured on serve. Played lights out when down MP though.

Really disappointing behavior from Andy...regardless, should be a good one with Djokovic

Soderling only played tennis when he was bp and mp down. He was absolutely shithouse whenever the score was level. He played a terrible match. Only some good heart kept him from being routined.

Roddick was an absolute prick. Just because you have better English than the person you're picking a fight with doesn't make you smarter asshole.

The reason the umpire didn't give you a specific time limit on challenges is that there is none. Umpires have a large degree of discretion in deciding whether a challenge was made within a reasonable time frame. Is that so hard do understand?

Enunciating your words carefully and being patronising do not make you look smart, Andy, especially when you're being deliberately obtuse.

Andy was on fire for the first set and a half, serving out of a tree and reading Robin's serve very well. Roddick was a break up in the 2nd set and threw away a service game, threw away his momentum and the dynamic of the match changed.

Soderling started serving better(or Roddick started reading the serve worse) and got into a better rhythm, and pushed it into a tiebreak. Roddick played tight, Robin made some big shots and won it.

3rd set was more of the same really. It felt like Roddick's adrenaline was used up, but he kept fighting and was able to keep it together through the tiebreak and pull out the win.

Really good win for Roddick. I don't think he'll have enough juice to beat Djokovic tomorrow....but we've seen Novak play like a wuss in the daytime heat against Roddick before, so it could happen again.

Pretend there isn't a challenge system. He would be making those types of calls in the most important parts of the match. Now imagine him on non-challenge courts making the same calls that are more than 60% wrong. He is useless, this ump wants the spotlight and a piece of the action.

Really just a horrible match the whole way through. Disappointing to see considering it was a much-anticipated match between two top players.

Roddick's aces entirely dried up after a set and a half, and of course about 5 winners total off the ground from him. Soderling showed flashes of brilliance but couldn't string points together at all. This match really revealed how vulnerable Soderling is to low balls on the forehand side. His extreme grip makes it so difficult for him to get under the ball and keep it in the court, especially at the pace he's hitting. He needs to go for safer shots with more topspin and less pace when a junkballer like Roddick is slicing and dicing down the middle of the court. It was fitting that the match ended on yet another Soderling fh error, even though on the penultimate point he smacked a huge and beautiful forehand winner (expectedly, off a higher-bouncing short ball).

Always disappointing, IMO, to see the more passive player win. I hope that Djokovic destroys Roddick tomorrow. Novak NEEDS the revenge badly. Can't afford to become a huge Andy bitch at this precarious point in his career.

I'm one of the few who do believe that the heat of the moment does eventually get to you. For example, Roger telling the umpire to not talk and that he doesn't give a shit during the US Open finals last year. It's very unlike Roger but it was in the heat of the moment.

Unfortunately, some players have a higher anger level, such as Roddick. But I've met him before and he's really nice. I truly do believe he's sincere about it, compared to Serena who... well.. I've passed by her once after a match...

I do agree. BUT, to be fair, I think the officiating from the umpire tonight was weak. And not just because he clearly speaks poor English. In all of his overrules, he was tentative. In fact, I'm pretty sure he didn't even overrule that ball that Soderling had to challenge in the (god awful) 2nd set tiebreak: I think he assumed it was out (wrong) and assumed the linesperson made a call (wrong). All that he said was 8-7 Roddick (or whatever the score was), and then Robin challenged that immediately because previously he hadn't heard a call from anyone on the court. Roddick knew that, but I think he was just letting out his aggression on the clueless man in the chair. Easy target.

I truly do believe he's sincere about it, compared to Serena who... well.. I've passed by her once after a match...

that was a really scary aura.

Well, I've never met the guy. But having watched him berate umpires and lesser players for a decade, not to mention belittle reporters and sometimes make disparaging comments about people he doesn't even know (on his blog or twitter or whatever), I've gotten the impression that his treatment of people purely depends on what the advantage is to him. If he can get a laugh by making someone else seem stupid, he has no qualms about doing that. But only if that person is a no-name umpire or journalist, or some minor celebrity he'll never have to meet in person. Of course, he's always polite and self-deprecating in one-on-one interviews or with fans. And of course he'd never get in a confrontation with someone like Nadal or Federer. But that's because he knows that wouldn't be as well received by most people.

That's what I dislike about him the most, really. He's a bully who only picks on people smaller than him.

Agreed. Safin straddled the line between entertainer and temper tantrum perfectly, which won him so many fans. DickRod goes way over the edge and shows his real self in these kinds of matches. Namely, an arrogant, privileged, asshole. Federer ruining his career is probably the best karma in tennis, and I only wish we could send Roger back in time to destroy Jimmy Connors in GS finals too

Not a really well played match but an interesting one.

Roddick started off serving really well, with power and precision, hitting it 133+ everywhere--out wide on the AD side, up the T on the AD, and down the T on deuce. Soderling didn't get anything back which is usually the case when someone serves well against him, even players whose serves aren't as big as Roddick's. Not getting into any service games of Roddick threw Soderling off of his game and he never looked into it early, hitting all kinds of errors and not doing much with his FH, hitting it weakly when he should have crushed some midcourt balls.

Sod went down a break in the 2nd and looked out of it, but then Roddick donated the next game and it was a tough war from there on out. Roddick didn't do anything with his FH and didn't attack the net at all. As a previous poster mentioned, Roddick's BH was probably better than his FH as it had more depth and was rather consistent. He defended really well and was mentally tough as usual.

Soderling's serve is too predictable on the AD side as he goes to the one out wide too often. His serve up the T on the AD side doesn't hug the line nor is it hit with as much power (nobody hits that serve with as much power as the one out wide on the AD or the one down the T on the deuce, but Soderling's loses a lot of mph when going for that serve). Developing that serve would make him that much more difficult to break and more difficult to defeat.

Not surprised by the scoreline and that Andy won. Watched the first set and all I saw was ace ace ace and then some additional pushing when the ball was finally in. Soderling looked pretty crap, but I'm still counting him to be quarter minimum in USO.

Andy did have a bit of a tantrum(s) tonight, but to be completely honest, the line calls were consistently wrong, and the umpire was completely out of line calling the ball that was in, out, when it was on the farthest part of the court from him. So, with the moment being as tense as it was then, I can see why he got upset.

Anyway, A-Rod fought, his level of play went consistently down as the match went on, and Robin got quite a bit better but was too inconsistent and that is what cost him.

Talk about overreacting. And I don't mean Roddick. If any other player had questioned it the same way, then you'd be hearing nothing but excuses and attacks on the umpire for the most part. Roddick acts like a drama queen, but it's hardly the level that warrants the tirades against him. Roddick really brings the Eurotrash out of the woodwork. It's incredible.

I don't think Roddick's a good matchup for him...Andy can get into Robin's service games to some extent and the junk that he'll throw out there a lot will force Robin to overhit/miss. At least what I've judged from the 2 matches this year

Quit bitchin'...

Roddick owned Toaderling for a set and half. No idea why he played a crap game and got broken but had he not this would have been a straight sets drubbing and not a 3 set marathon thriller. Although I didn't think Andy was capable of playing at a high level like he did last night...all of the things I said basically were evident. Basically that Toad can't return a big serve on a fast surface and he makes a lot of errors...this is why he lost.

love you roddick, you really made my week.

As for the umpire bashing, that guy fucking deserves it. He hosed baghs last week against Chardy in Toronto, and he is a huge criminal on non-challenge courts.

That umpire should be suspended for the garbage he tries to pull off.

That's not the same umpire from the Baggy-Chardy match, quite clearly.

The guy in the Baggy match was a white guy.

Agree. Ump was poor. I'm wondering if he was weak because is English is shit or he's just a pussy.

Mo Lahyani or Lars Graff would have had much better comebacks for Roddick.

I don't mind players losing it with umpires, I just can't stand that smug condescending shit they pull and that was the worst example since Blake asked "do you realise how much money you're costing me here?".

This was a surprise. I thought for sure Soderling would outlast Roddick and win it. Guess I was wrong.. Good for Roddick though. Maybe he isn't "over" quite yet as some posters here predicted. He may be out of the Top 10, but I think it won't be too long until he's back in. He's not a bad hard courter, and this is hard court season. He may do some serious damage in USO.
