Cincy R3: Murray def. Gulbis 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(4)

Murray seemed lethargic throughout. I think initially that he was a little flustered that Gulbis wasn't ball bashing and resorted to creating the point. Murray resorted to just rolling a lot of his 1st serves in waiting for Gulbis to make the error off of the return or during the rally.

Not a great performance. But he did enough.

Murray was tired but still did great to get the win  Onwards, young Brit :woohoo:

It wasn't pretty, but it was gutsy. He looked in pain out there.

As far as Gulbis goes, he really is a joke. If he couldn't beat Andy today, I don't think he ever will.

Murray looked like he tweaked something (hip? knee?) on a wrong footing by Gulbis mid-way through the third.

Andy did what he had to do, but is ripe for the picking for Fish next round.

As for Gulbis, some good stuff, but bad decision making in crucial times and a MUGGY tiebreak.

Gulbis wouldn't have made an Ace or good 1st serve in that breaker if it so went on to infinity, Mugray outruns another mug playing below average!!

Whats wrong with Andy??? Gulbis was good but he is too young and couldnt manage a tie

My soul bleeds  Awful for Gulbis that playing his game isnt good enough to beat fatigued Murray, more like. Get a grip :wavey:

Pathetic stuff by Gulbis :o Murray played 30 % below his standards, won actually only thanks to his amazing defensive skills and lack of Gulbis' killer instinct.

What a clown this Gulbis. He hit 6 UES in the tiebreak. All Murray had to do was to win a point, and in end he did.

I wouldn't say Murray won today, he just lost less.

Good for Murray to win when he is below par, would have lost this match earlier in the year, good for his USO seeding too. Not a great match to watch, Gulbis wasn't too great either making some poor errors. Conditions were apparently tough though.

Would be Fish's third victory over Murray this year.

Not a very exciting match at all. I'm very disappointed that Gulbis missed such easy overheads and volleys. That killed his chances of winning this match. He basically let Murray off the hook with some poor shot choices and if I were Gulbis, I would be ashamed of myself for not making the shots I should've been making. I hope Fish takes Murray out in the next round.

Total wasted chances for Gulbis though, didn't recognise the situation, played too aggressive and wild when solidity and consistency would have taken Murray's legs out from under him.

Andy battled through though, as he is wont to do - he rarely hands these matches over, you have to take them, and Gulbis didn't.

The missed overheads and volleys were the reason Gulbis didn't win this one. If he has any intention on taking his game to the next level......those are 2 crucial things he needs to work on.

Gulbis choked. Lame.

Murray had some physical problem in the 3rd set, from his 2nd service game onwards he averaged pretty much spot on 100mph ......... on the first serve. Gulbis just made a total mess of his chances though.

Terrible TB from Ernests but it really shouldn't have even gotten there. No BPs converted in the 3rd set. :(

Shame because he totally outplayed Murray - good luck at the US Open!

Terrible from Murray but at least he got through

That, and tactics.

Late in the third, he had chances on Murray's serve, 15-30, 2 points from the match, Gulbis misses two 2nd serve returns well out :o

Nothing to add here, well said.

Yeah, and Murray's retrieving skills are amazing, I dunno how he gets back some of these balls so well and deep, that is insane.

Awful for Gulbis that he was palying great and still couldn't beat a clearly very sub-par and sluggish Murray
Or rather, amazing that Murray could beat a very good Gulbis, while being sluggish and very sub-par.
Either way...VICTORY FOR MURRAY YET AGAIN!!! :woohoo: :bounce: :aparty:
Suck it, haters :bigwave:

Murray gets beaten, Murray plays rubbish sometimes, Murray often deserves to lose even when he wins, but MURRAY DOES NOT TANK.

Well I'm not so bothered about that, he should still have time to recover well for New York whatever happens here.

I'd just rather he didn't lose to Mardy fucking Fish again.

A crap match to be honest! Ernest did NOT outplay Murray,no way! Andy was fatigued. Ernests didn;t take advantage, the mental demons came back. If Andy had played even 10% better overall Ernests would have been soundly beaten.

A work in progress...geez get the painting done some day Ernests:lol: ;)

That was such an annoying match to watch at 4 in the morning. Several times I wanted to reach through my TV and slap both of them.
But particularly Ernests  He had moments of brilliance, and then not so much. Horrible TB.

Oh well congrats Andy for scraping through that.
