How the hell do you lose 4 points in a row in a 3rd set tiebreaker after hitting a second serve ace to get it to 5-3?

Good job Gulbis, he saved MPs too right?

I saw on the scoreboard Melzer had 5:4* (40-15) in the third set and second serve! Impressive win by Gulbis, especially that Melzer is one of the best players in the final set tie-breaks :worship:

Melzer led also earlier 3:2 (40-15) in the third.

How many matchpoints wasted, Jürgen? But, I like Gulbis, too. I only moan about about the non-coverage.

Amazing fight from Ernests! Glad to see he has it in him.

BTW - Gulbis had a set point in the 1st TB so this really should have been over in 2. ;)

So proud of him! :bounce:

Next round, his match is surely going to be shown :D

It will be against Murray if he gets past Chardy, so yes.
I think all R3 onwards matches are on just the 2 tv courts though i think?

absolutely disgusting shit.

melzer had 15-40 on the return twice, and match two points at 4-5. he also had match point at 6-5. 4-0 in the tiebreaker isn't good enough for this mug, as he proceeds to win only one point the rest of the way. Words can not describe how useless of a player jurgen is.

Great job of Gulbis to defeat Melzer who's not a bad player.

Melzer on the other hand just proves he's still a mental midget.

Melzer may be a choker, but the old Gulbis would never have won this match. Hope he's here to stay in the mentally sound department, the game needs a player of his potential :yeah:

Mentally,Ernests continues to improve. Not so long ago losing a 1st set tie-break the way he did would have led to meltdown. And then saving matchpoints and recovering from 0-4 down in final set tie-break. Courageous win, well done Ernests:yeah:

The old Gulbis...lol... he is 21. but I agree.
He already showed last spring before his harmstring injury, that he could hold his nerves. He just needed to go further in tournament to build his confidence and his game shots.
lost first tie 10-8...
21 aces today, but 7 DF as many as Meltzer.
Too bad we had no stream for his first 2 matches.
but we will for Murray: hope he will give him a good shot.

Gulbis served insanely well, but those return stats are just horrendous:

First serve return: 12/65 (18%)
Second serve return: 14/34 (41%)
Second serve return excluding doublefaults: 7/27 (26%)

Melzer can serve well, but he's not Karlovic.

osmonde

I saw the final when he blasted Karlovic at Delray beach.
Karlo was broken many times on his serve, he could not believe it because Ernie took the serve early and smashed it back.
Won in 2: 6-2, 6-3. Rarely have we seen that score when Karlo is on court.
So, when he is on, he could do it.

Gulbis has won by far two matches after saving match point, both in Cincinnati, both in the 2nd round, and both after 7-6(5) in the third - previously two years ago against Clement :D

Didn't saw the match, but from the score and from what i see here, Gulbis step by step, showing the mental strenght that he doesn't have in the past. If he keep it that way, i see a top 10 (and who knows, a top 5) next season...

How ATP site resumes his win:

Murray next faces Latvian Ernests Gulbis, who fought past No. 13 seed Jurgen Melzer of Austria 6-7(8), 6-3, 7-6(5) as he saved two match points at 4-5, 15/40, and another one at 5-6 in the third set. He also trailed 0-4 and 3-5 in the tie-break before winning the last four points.
