Has anyone 'achieved' such thing, it's fucking crazy.

I can't be bothered to work it out but I think if Nadal got injured now and didn't play until next April he would still prob have enough points to be number 1 or certainly be in the top 2.

Del Potro accumulated a lot of points at this time last year.

Well, we just have a strange situation where a slam champion and WTF finalist has not been able to play for most of a season. In practice this demonstrates how heavily the ranking points favour those who excel in the biggest tournaments. After he loses the US Open points his ranking could well slip down well into the 30s.

Yes it's rather ridiculous with the way Federer and Djokovic are playing he could have easily been #2 behind Nadal.

2011 will be Brands' year though.

You're right. In the situation where somebody would play one slam in a season, win it, and for some reason not play any other tournament he'd be ranked in the top 20 with something like a 95% chance.

He deserves to still be there. It's not like anyone is picking up for him. Berdych is pretty much the only top player with substantial signs of improvement this year -- Ljubicic won Indian Wells!

in a couple of week he'll have to say goodbye to the top-10 anyway

Agree there really is noone else breaking through at the moment. It's quite disappointing.

I think we all know that Del Potro is the real #1. Nadal is a worthy transitional #1 but he isn't fooling anyone.

Nadal has crushed competition. nearly every top 20 could be a top 10 with a good run in a MS 1000.

most of the points out there have been taken by the top guys. Nadal has almost 11,000 points and Murray at #4 with only about 5,000. WOrld # 10 has only 3,000 points. Delpo has 2,000 from the USO last year in his kitty which is keeping him in the top 10. Anyone able to win one grand slam could pretty much find himself in the top 10 it seems if all it takes is 3,000 points to get in.

Davydenko hasn't won three consecutive matches since February and he's still 6th. As ApproachShot was saying, the ranking system favours players with a small number of very big results in big events. You get more ranking points from one Slam win than 4 ATP500 semis, 2 ATP250 finals and 5 Masters1000 quarters combined.

Didn't realise this

It just proves how great Delpo is. In fact, he even had that one week wherein he went up a spot in the rankings without even playing.

Sadly, he'll be in the 30s soon.

Luckily he has no points to defend from the us open to the year end finals or we could have seen a real plumet.

2000 points from a major win does help that a bit...

He will be around 35 after USO

Given that he has such a large chunk of points from USO and later, it's not surprising really. If he won RG rather than USO, we wouldn't be having this thread by now because he'd be out of top 10 as soon as those points are dropped. 2000 points is not exactly peantus that others will easily gather and overtake him.

when you think that top 4 will egoistically take all these points...

Winning a GS gives you 2000 points which means in today's ranking a top 20 spot. So you could play 1 tournament the whole year, win it and be a top20 player (which almost also guarantees you a spot at the WTC). Of course it's easier said than done but it shows you how inflated the GS points are!

Just shows how bad the weighting of the ranking system is.

Vamos DelPo!
