One player whom you expect to spring big surprises at US Open 2010

not many expected del potro to rise to the occasion and beat nadal and federer back to back in a slam and run away with the title.......chance for that sort of thing happening this year looks less but if you feel someone can step it up against the big 4(or big 3?) this time and reach a semis or final, who could be it?

will berdych strike once more? or will it be someone outside the top 20? how do you rate the chances of players like thomaz bellucci, jurgen melzer and king david?

Elena.

Robin Soderling

he doesn't move that well on hardcourts and also he doesn't get enough time to make those big swings on the fast hardcourts of flushing meadows.......in any case we will see as you have made your choice.......

not happening no matter in which angle you tried to view his best chances.......think someone else, we need that one player to step it up against the big 3(or 4).......

Good thread.

Berdych or Soderling if theyre hot I guess can go deep.

I dont see Belluci or Melzer making an impact to be honest.

Berdych and Soderling doing damage wouldn't even be surprising though. Both are top 8 players.

Berdych.

could be.......how i like him not to choke.......he needs to work on incorporating a defensive slice which comes in very handy on these surfaces.......

Wouldn't even be surprising with Söderling or Berdych. Robin has two GS finals and a couple quarters, Tomas with a final and semi and all these results are lately. Quite frankly I'd be more surprised to see Djokovic win.

What about Davydenko? If he finds his groove he can do damage to anybody, doubtful if he could do it multiple matches at this point tho.

Baghdatis has also played very well this summer.

Don't forget Fit Dave, and my darkhorse, Jeremy Chardy.

JANKO - Played really well on Hardcourts this summer, and often plays well in Slams:

Federer

Somehow after 5 US Opens in a row and a Finalist last year, I think most of MTF would be shocked if he won it again this year.

Not sure there's any major surprise likely, but there are quite a few nasty floaters just outside the seedings: Dolgo, Nalby, Fish, Simon, Hewitt and perhaps Golubev. Possibly we get some biggish upsets in R1/R2.

I think top 4 is in great form and it will be hard for other players to sneak into final. Gasquet or Chardy could create surprise, a quarter maybe.

Soderling doesn't play that well at the US compared to the French, not enough time for those big swings at the ball. Expect him to do much better at the indoor Masters for example.

Nalbandian and Berdych are the best bets imo. But it all depends on the draw. Hopefully Berdych gets Djokovic in the quarter so he can take the trash out.

It will be top 4 semis...but if anyone than Berdych.

I hope either Baghdatis or Gasqet can make the quarters, depending upon the draw. Beyond that stage I don't think there will be any major surprises. Being former slam finalists, if Soderling or Berdych made it to the final Sunday then I don't think that would constitute a big shock.

Everyone is writing off Daniel Brands. He's gonna go very deep in the draw.

i believe that a guy that has had a pretty bad year can just explode and go very far in the draw for examble blake
we all know he capable of going very far but he is losing his confidence a bit too so if he can pull of a big victory and just gain confidence he and many more players like him can be very dangerous

Nor would be Baghdatis or Gasquet, basing on past form(they made GS final-Baghdatis- and GS 1/2 finals-Baghdatis and Gasquet)

Dolgopolov can do well, but right now he's still too crazy and his return on serve clearly sucks, so i expect him to win 1 or 2 turns

Berdych will run deep, maybe SF, but I don't think that in the end he can achieve the title

I think even Isner and maybe Wawrinka will reach a QF, or even a SF talking 'bout Isner.. I don't seriously see any favourite, and I don't see a Nadal Federer Murray Djokovic SF at all

Tipsarevic with the right draw could make noise. I'd love to see a night match with him and Murray or Querrey on night 1.

Has anyone mentioned Nalbandian!? The wagon fell apart so quickly.

Isner and Baghdatis and Chardy as others have said. Ferrer, Gulbis, Fish. Like Helevorn I want to say Dolgopolov.

This is Berdych's first pressure slam with the weight of expectation on his shoulders. He's put in some dire performances (even withdrawal) on Ashe over the years, but he's made inroads. Still, it'll be interesting to see how he plays on the big stage with people expecting more of him.

Surprise not to the tennis world in general but to the haters on this forum for sure. Many won't log in for days if Rafa bites the trophy on September 12 in NY.

08-18-2010, 05:23 AM
Nalbandian, because he has won many matches on hard court this season. Players with that type of record tend to do well at majors.

I want to see some of the new up and comers making an impact. Belluci (he's a hottie), that Dolgopolov, Tomic. Somebody we haven't seen much on TV but already made it into 20's. Just some new face.

TurtleTennis
08-18-2010, 08:49 AM
Dolgopolov, the guy has great potential, I think best of 5 actually suits him better than best of 3

Berdych, wouldn't be too surprising as he's made SF and F in last two grand slams, but I would love it if he did win

Gulbis, we all know he's capable, but it would be a big surprise if he actually managed to perform

Fish and Isner have chances too

That's about it.

I see Nadal, Federer, Djokovic, Murray, Soderling and Berdych in the quarters. And 2 more for a padding.

Maybe Gulbis and Isner will make a good tourney

king david might fill that role this time if you ask me.......he's had sufficient practice and with a bit of luck who knows how far he will go.......tipsarevic is one more interesting pick but i think he should have a good draw for a start.......berdych is one more that i will keep an eye on........

how far can tipsy go? he has monfils and possibly bellucci lined up before the quarters.......
