Why did Cincy give Blake a WC?

Surely there's a young up and coming American who would've been more deserved of a WC than Blake?

Embarrassing decision.

Could have just given the wildcard to someone in the crowd, you'd have seen a better effort.

He's an American. He's a former finalist. And he probably asked nicely.

Probably because he brought in a large crowd for almost a decade. Istomin and Falla will never do that here.

Blake is a disgrace, and the organization fell for it.

That ace ends the game and marks one of the worst efforts I have EVER seen on a tennis court.

45 minutes, nice one James.

If he's still receiving WC's, then something is wrong.

fuck the organizers. that was one of the worst matches i have ever seen. 45 minutes with 6-0 second set.

pffffft

I really sincerely hop that the US Open doesn't give him a WC and he won't make the MD. I really do after this.

If they do give him WC, they're embarassing

After this performance no tournament director should even think of giving Blake a wild card.If he plays qualies and gets in the main draw then fine but not a WC and get beaten like this

I understand the decision to give Blake a WC. He was a former finalist after all. After today's match, there is no way he should be given another WC to another tournament, and certainly not to the U.S. Open. Let him play the qualies and earn his way into the MD. That was zero effort from Blake and I'm surprised he even earned three games.

I hope this match gets the publicity is deserves and all the tournament directors are aware of Blakes lack of interest anymore. It's be a shame if they weren't aware of this embarrasing display. Qualies for Blake.

James has wildcards lined up wherever he wants this summer. New Haven is next then the US Open which will give him a main draw WC. I can't blame the USO for doing it either. James has provided some good moments in Ashe and he's sold tickets so he deserves it based on the time he put in and on his past entertainment value.

Call it a "lifetime achievement WC" if you want.

I was asking that in some tour topic.

USTA is giving him a lot of WC on USO Series and he's making nothing to comeback even to the TOP100 he is just playing to the rewtirement to earn some money 10k for lose with Istomin is a good payout for him but he killed some hope after LA when he could make some good score @ USO Series.

He isn't worth even WC to Master Qualys or even challenger but rank gives him MD.

USTA will give him WC to USO MD we can bet it.

It's sad to see that performance by former #4

former number 4, former finalist, american; maybe they thought Blake would have taken more than the usual 6 spectators in the crowd

The Entry List was done one month ago, and he has not made the main draw.

Anyway, to answer the initial question, because he is actually famous in the United States. Maybe one of four or five active male tennis players who is.

Of course he is going to get a WC for the US Open.

Blake did get a US Open WC.

He's a "fan favorite" after all.

This thread....

He's a former top 5 player and a finalist. It would have been a CRIME if they didnt give him a WC. His result doesnt matter. If you think Cincy shouldnt have given him a wildcard you need to be checked out by a doctor.

For the same reason that a decade ago he was getting wildcards and Davis Cup selections when he wasn't even one of the top 10 ranked American players. He'd be out of the top 250 without all the special treatment. That goes throughout his entire career. Because the media made him one of the more famous American players, not because he deserved it. That's just the way it is. But the idea that anyone is going to buy tickets to see James Blake is asinine.

Of course he's going to get a WC...he was the second best American for a while, career high of #4, always seemed to be a solid threat to get to the second week of slams. And yes, it may shock people but Blake will bring fans

Some of the posts in here are incredibly hateful. Expected nothing less out of MTF

screw this. james ought to be playing challenger level players and then see if he can beat them, none of this guarenteed entry to a slam anymore. if you aren't going to keep a quality level of play up, then you deserve to work to play. i predict he'll do okay in new haven, but probably draw nadul 2nd round at uso
