WWW: Fictional 8 player GOAT Tour?

After countless hours of analysis, I have come to the conclusion that 8 players in history's tennis resumes stand out further than the rest. One could easily swap these seeds around, though, and they are entirely subjective.

Alas, here they are.

1. Rod Laver
2. Roger Federer
3. Ken Rosewall
4. Bill Tilden
5. Pancho Gonzales
6. Pete Sampras
7. Don Budge
8. Bjorn Borg

Now, in my fictional GOAT tour, these 8 players would play the 4 slams, 9 TMS, and TMC. The AO on the current Plexicushion, slower RG clay, faster Wimbledon grass, and current USO decoturf.

Assuming the current ranking system, which of these 8 players would be #1 at the end of the year?

I think Laver would win the AO, Borg the French, Sampras Wimbledon and Federer the USO.

Overall, I think Federer would get it done and finish #1.

So you're disregarding half a century of improvements in technique and preparation?

Guigr, my minimum criteria was 10 slams but you think I should have included more Open Era players?

Guys like Mac, Lendl, Connors, Agassi, Nadal, Wilander, Edberg, Becker?

A boring GOAT thread with no definite answer and the same predictable predictions.

If they all had access to modern raquets, a season would look like that:

AO Federer > Sampras 6/3 6/4 4/6 6/2
French Federer > Borg 6/4 6/2 6/2
Wim Sampras > Federer 7/6 4/6 7/5 7/6
USO Federer > Sampras 7/6 6/2 6/4

Year end ranking:
1) Federer (wins Indian Wells, Madrid, Monte Carlo, Rome, Toronto, Shanghai, TMC)
2) Sampras (wins Key Biscayne, Cincinnati, Paris )
3) Borg
4) Laver
...

You think Federer would beat Borg at RG?

In straights?

And Sampras would make 3 finals? I doubt that.

I'd like to see a Pancho Gonzales-Pete Sampras match. It would be like mirror images of each other.

Pretty spot on with the 8 there, though there's an argument for replacing Budge with one of Connors, Lendl, or McEnroe. I think Laver takes it.

If Fed uses today's racket technology and Borg uses a wooden racket, then Borg would be lucky to win 1 game.

And I thought you'd pick Brands.. Chalk that up to one missed opportunity. :p

Nadal wouldn't lose a match on clay and would finish the year TOP 8 on that alone.

And the Roman army circa 110 A.D. would lose to today's Belgian army. But that's not really the point.

Where is king Oscar in your list? You could have at least named him as substitute, along with Donald Young.

I think the Top 8 players should be only from the Open era:
Federer
Sampras
Borg
Agassi
Lendl
Connors
Nadal
McEnroe

You can not mix up the decades.
The material has changed.

Give every player wooden rackets? Or give the old guys new rackets?

I would give the old guys new rackets. Give them time to train and get in shape, get used to the new rackets.
