Will Marin Cilic ever win a major?

Ok guys I´m new her and I already read a few things on this board.
One of my indentations is that,Cilic is one of the most hated guys here, especially the Croats hate him here.
But I like him a lot and he´s one of my favs along with Del Potro, Nadal, Fed and a few others.

Ok but now I want to know your opinion if Cilic will win a major title or even more..
Don´t forget he´s still young with 21 years and I think the youngest player in the Top100 after Donald Young and Dolgopolov.
I think Cilic needs to pull it together and try to get mentally tougher.
I also think he should fire Bob Brett and hire a full time coach who´s going with him to tournaments and who really works on his flaws, like his serve which is pretty weak for such a tall guy.
IMO he has the weapons and I´m sure his time will come.

Your opinion.. Haters and bitter Croats please get out here. (RIboy, samanosuke..)

he won't

I don't see it honestly. The technique on his forehand alone won't let him win 7 matches in a row. He can always improve the serve, but no pro can change the grip of his strokes at this point in the career.

Yes. Multiple slams for Cilic

Pathetic to say he has no chance. Of course he has a shot, hes a great tennis player. You dont get to the top 10 aged 21 by being a hopeless tennis player. And he probably gonna have another 20-30 shots at it after all!

No one can say he surely won't get one (no, not even some of you clowns here), because he still is young and prone to change. He surely is talented and I don't really see, why someday he couldn't reach for the top. C'mon, who foresaw Johansson getting the AO in 2002?

Never had any special fan feelings towards him, neither liked nor disliked him, I just find some of the arguments here (strangely, some even by his compatriots, who I'm sure will be the first to bandwagon should he become successful) really immature and illogical. Bullshit to be precise.

A good question to ask is....who can't he beat?

On clay and grass, I think he has a very small chance of winning a Slam.

On hard courts, he has the game to beat most anyone on a given day. He has already beaten Murray, Roddick, and Del Potro at Slams, has beaten Nadal on hard courts and clearly has the type of hard court game that gives Nadal trouble. I think Federer is a very bad match-up for him....and he has a poor record against Djokovic as well. But if he could avoid those guys and beat the guys that he should beat, then I don't see why he couldn't win a Slam.

I think Cilic has the talent to win a slam, but not for at least a couple years. He has some improving to do, especially at the net. But right now I can't see him winning multiple slams unless he makes a dramatic improvement. ;)

At the moment he is not having variety in his game for that. He must learn how to play at the net for instance.
His game is quite good read by the top players- just put the ball in the middle of the baseline, deep enough , not give chance for angles and he'll make a error sooner or later.

Just cos the guy has had a poor 2010 dosent mean he will have a poor 2011, 2012 etc. I think he will win a major but not for 2-3 years.

He has lots of improving to do but he's young and certainly has a shot. I never thought I'd see Del Potro win a slam after seeing him back when he had the long hair and a 95 mph first serve, but he's certainly improved over time and Cilic should do the same

osmonde

He just lost 6-4,7-5 first round in Cincy against Baghdatis.
So he has a lot to work on until winning even a master.

All this talk about variety and need for net game is ridiculous given that del Potro already has a slam and Nadal has quite a few. It would without doubt boost his game, but it most definitely is not a prerequiste for winning a slam in this day and age.

Mugrin Marin does not have the defensive capabilities of Nadal, nor the mental strength, or the consistency of his ground game. He doesn't have the serve of Del Potro or the consistency of Del Potro either.

He has nothing in his game that is at an excellent level. A mediocre first serve, a poor second serve, an unreliable FH, a solid BH, mediocre movement, mediocre anticipation, poor netplay, and questionable mental strength.

Nole looked like a terminator compared to mentally weak Marin and he barely managed to snatch one. And ofc might get more.

But Marin is just the next Robredo.

And once his back gives up and he switches from this serve to a compensatory one like Roger did, it will go from bad to wrose.

I don't wish him that, i hope he makes some GS semies, but i can't see him going all the way.

Even if he gets somehow in a final, with his weak mentality he will need 2 more to get used to this and finally win one.

Will Marin play 3 GS finals? not possible imho

I think maybe he could sneak in a Masters win at one stage but a slam would be too big an ask I think.

Goldenoldie
08-16-2010, 10:44 AM
I think he peaked last year and is on his way down, at least for the time being.

Like a number of young players he has shot up quickly, but now that more experienced players have seen his game he won't cause so many surprises.

I don't think he will win a slam, but I never thought Del Potro would, so what do I know?

MurrayFan1
08-16-2010, 10:46 AM
Tbh, he is a bit shit on clay and grass, and has had one or two dissapointing results, really tough to say. I'll say if he doesn't win the USO this year or AO next year, then no.

Nalrodd
08-16-2010, 10:46 AM
People seem to forget that he is 21. He still is prone to change and he could adapt to a completely different style in a few years of hard work and training + match practice.

Just saying...

This wtf? This is not even a question. Clownrin Muglic or Mugrin Clownlic whatever you want to call him. He is a complete joke.

A post without Brands. Amazing :worship:

But on a serious note, I think his chances of winning a slam is very unlikely. He has a very good, consistent and all-around game but he doesn't really have a shot that stands out. Yes, he does have a fantastic serve like many other top Croats, but it obviously isn't Karlovic-like or even Ljubicic/Ancic-like.

And when you thought Ancic had a large backswing on his forehand, you then see how Marin's forehand is even worse in that aspect. He takes it way too far back, and players are able to exploit it. His backhand is very solid, but again, it lacks weaponish qualities that other top players have. Of course I wouldn't completely write him off though, because anything can happen, especially when you put yourself in the second week of a slam which Marin has done a few times.

His serve should be much better for a guy with his height. Maybe too late for major changes now but hey Mugrin you are almost 2m. It should be a weapon! If he had a deadly serve I could see him having a decent shot at a title. Now he should be happy to stay in top20 for the time being.
