Roddick is hit with Mononucleosis

MASON, Ohio (AP)

Andy Roddick finally knows what’s been getting him down the last few months—a mild case of mononucleosis.

Roddick said on Saturday that one of several blood tests came back positive for mononucleosis. Doctors told him he’s probably had it for the last couple of months and should be nearly over it.

“I’m just glad that we found out something that was causing it,” said Roddick, who is getting ready for next week’s Cincinnati Masters. “It’s weird, the fear of kind of the unknown and not knowing what’s going on. There were some days where it was good, and some days where it was real bad. So it was like you would have one of those two or three good days, and it was like, ‘OK, you’re just being kind of a wimp.’

“So it’s nice to have a little bit of clarity moving forward. It’s not something that’s going to affect me, anything super-serious.”

Roger Federer had mononucleosis in 2008, leading to a decline in his wins and his ranking. Roddick has slipped to No. 11 in the world while struggling through a summer of out-of-character losses, making him wonder what was wrong.

Seeded fifth at Wimbledon, he lost to 82nd-ranked Yen-hsu Lu of Taiwan in the fourth round. He lost to Gilles Simon in the third round at Washington on Aug. 6, saying afterward that he didn’t feel right. He got blood tests in Washington and more in Texas, and withdrew from the Rogers Cup in Toronto this week while awaiting results.

“I guess I’ve been dealing with a mild, mild case of mono for the last couple of months that I wasn’t really sure about,” he said. “So they think I’m fine now. They think I’m most of the way through it, if not all the way through it.”

Roddick said he tired more easily this summer, prompting him to cut back on his workout schedule.

“I enjoy training all day and running all day long and doing all that stuff,” Roddick said. “You know, I opted out of probably four or five workouts this summer—that I’ve never done before. So that wasn’t fun. It was just me wondering if I was out of shape or what was going on, why there was this lethargic feeling.”

He expects to be fine for the U.S. Open, where he lost to John Isner in the third round last year. Roddick won the 2003 U.S. Open. He said his doctor was encouraging.

“He said, ‘You know, the good news is you’re probably ready to rock. Be a little careful, but you should be fine to go,”’ Roddick said. “That was a relief.”

Considering my bias, I am likely to believe him.

If I wasn't bias, I'd second guess it. Only one of the several said Mono, after all. I think he was just looking for a way to explain himself.

More importantly, Mono hurts. I've never heard of mild Mono before. If someone I knew had Mono, that person would be in bed for a while.

That's what he gets for kissing Roger's ass all these years, he picks up the Fed disease.

Will he play Cinci? Not much chance of getting a UO top seed, would need something like a final.

It's incredible. He was predicted to crack the Top 5 once again after his double Masters runs. And now he's not even close.

What do you mean? Only one doctor diagnosed him with Mono?

Same thing happened to me as Roddick when I was about 17. I went to school, played tournaments, trained, etc. Some days I just felt exhausted, other were O.K.. Finally after about 2 months, went to doctor and blood test said mono. Then I had to have complete bed rest for about 2 weeks because apparently mono can become very serious. So you can have a "mild case" of mono and still function, just not at 100%. Although I would think his doctor would have told him to rest for a while instead of preparing for USO.

And I THINK there are several different tests for mono - different degrees of sensistivity, so it is possible to get different results.

Good to hear that the mono is in the latter stages for him...rest up and come back decent for the US Open

There are different degrees - I had a health checkup for other reasons at 17/18 or so, and was told I'd had mono at some point. Was news to me, hadn't felt unwell at all.

Mono's seriousness can vary significantly. It's possible for people to have it without showing any symptoms (yes, that means you could be infected RIGHT NOW!), whereas others can be sidelined for months.

Maybe you shouldn't restrict your knowledge of mono to only your personal experience.

"Not everyone has all of the classic mononucleosis symptoms - some people have no symptoms. Many people just have swollen glands, and some just suffer fatigue. Other people may have a fever, a sore throat, and swollen lymph glands. Infants and young children usually only have a sore throat or tonsillitis, but they may have no symptoms at all."

It's always good to have the so-called doctors on MTF who know more about diseases as the doctors which the players consult.

Hopefully Andy will be fully recovered soon and can play at the USO. It must really be a relief to know what has caused the healthy problems lately.

how convenient of Roddick to come up with this "mono"

as soon as everyone saw Federer at the 2008 Aussie Open;you could clearly see that he was sick. His face was all puffy and red and let's not forget that huge zit on his face and he was sweating enough to fill up a lake and he had Mono the whole damn year

Federer's movement went MIA and they talked about him suffering the effects of the mono he had during the end of 2007 during the off season and let's not forget he was apparently puking

on the other hand;Roddick doesn't have great footwork and he looks fine.As usual he get outplayed which explains his losses:rolleyes:

how funny of Roddick to only suffer the effects from that "mono" just when it's getting out of his system:tape: :tape:

Federer didn't have mono for the entire year: he had it until part way through February:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/07/sports/07iht-arena.3.10811374.html

It messed up his year because he couldn't train properly during the off season. Roddick's reporting the exact same thing: he hasn't been able to train and recover properly: hence his sluggish performances on court recently, culminating with his loss to Giles Simon, where even his serve failed him. Say what you want about Roddick: he shouldn't be losing to players like Simon in the manner he did, and this diagnosis just confirms what he said since that match: he's been feeling much more lethargic than usual. But I guess in your world players routinely skip entire tournaments just to justify their previous losses at MM events.

damn, whatta bunch of haters...

Roddick has neevr been a crybaby and he doesn't need to explain his losses to lifeless hatermugs in MTF...

Doctors found him smth, he took a rest from Toronto and asked why - he answered.

Screw the midget minded complete idiots hating anyone who's better than them.

Life sux coz u are useless. Get over it mugs

Hopefully Arod gets well and back in top form soon. Though at this high level, even a sore throat can screw ur program up in a week. But for the lifeless wanking teenagers, this is just excuses....

I agree. federer looked like the living dead against Djokobitch, He was legendary reaching the semis in that condition unlike Andy Monomug who uses mono as an excuse for his serve only pushing tactics over the past 6 years.
He skips the clay season to take a vacation in the Caribbean every year because of mono, lost to a challenger level clown named Yen-Hsun Lu at Wimbledon becasue of mono. 2-19 record against Federer because of mono........

After reading this thread, I can justify now that:

1) Roddick has mono
2) Federer had mono and I should take back some of my troll posts
3) With the exception of a few like Mellow and Blue and others, Fedtards are doctors who equate the genius of House M.D and can accurately state that someone is sick just by watching them on your nice flatscreen HDTVs. They probably created the magic mist spray they use during the World Cup.
4) I kinda wish some posters had mono so we can make a thread about them, and tell them to retire from life.
