USO putting mics in players boxes in Ashe Stadium

The USTA put out a press release (http://www.usopen.org/usta_launches_new_programming_and_fan_enhancements _for_the_2010_us_open/) today announcing "new programming and fan enhancements" for the US Open this year. Buried in the middle of it, I noticed this:
Microphones in the Players Boxes: For the first time, microphones have been installed in the player boxes in Arthur Ashe Stadium, which will help viewers get even closer to the emotion and drama of the US Open by adding the perspective of the players’ guests as matches unfold. Has this ever been done before? I can't think of any other time. I wonder what the players think about this move.

My feelings are mixed -- sure, viewers will be able to know if there is illegal coaching, but are we going to have to listen to clips of Mirka snapping her gum?

Having mics in the players boxes is not a good idea at all.

It's an interesting idea....I imagine they'll only be replaying interesting comments from the box and that's about it. It's not like they're gonna send it to the box after every point and listen in.

Special Opening Night Ceremony: A ceremony celebrating those who "Dream, Succeed and Inspire" will feature four-time US Open champion Martina Navratilova, fan-favorite James Blake and reigning US Open Wheelchair singles and doubles champion Esther Vergeer. The special ceremony in Arthur Ashe Stadium will be hosted by ABC News’ Christiane Amanpour and will feature a special musical performance by Grammy winner Gloria Estefan. The ceremony will be televised live on ESPN2.Is this the best the can do for an MC? :o

All the European and Latino players clap for joy for once in their tennis careers about not being that popular in the U.S.

As for the qualifiers that will face Fish and Roddick, good luck.

instead of stupid shit like this how about ensuring US Open series matches either are on ESPN/TTC or ESPN3.com, and NOT on tape delay. The only match on TV from Toronto today was Fed. And on TTC they're showing taped WTA maches from Cincy. :retard:

Well, that's just idiocy but I'm not surprised. Just another gimmick at the US of O. It's become a three-ring circus in recent years so why not add another act.

Yes i'm sure we'll get some great farts from Murray's mom in the box while she's yelling "COME ON!"

I'm really surprised there is such a negative reaction to this on here. Unless one is receiving any sort of illegal coaching, how would this have an affect on the player whatsoever? As far as the casual viewer, I think that there will be some fans who will find it amusing just how rowdy that some players' boxes do or don't get. In other words, I see nothing that this takes away, and a slight addition to the overall broadcast (not to mention stopping verbal coaching).

:rolls: It doesn't get any worse than that.

Eh this is sort of like getting a mic on a bench for the NBA or NFL to see what random players/coaches are saying/reacting to the game. Sorta interesting sometimes but less so here.

The coverage of men's professional tennis in the US is just abysmal. You can't even get live matches of Master's Series events in your own country more often than not...

It's a matter of privacy, I wouldn't want my voice to be recorded like that, ever. Coaches shouldn't have to watch their words while watching matches. They might want to compare observations with the player girlfriend, but now that conversation will be recorded and broadcast for all to see.

It's not a huge issue, but it is an unnecessary one that really doesn't add much to the sport. All that's going to happen is that the coaches are going to sit in different seats.

exactly. i don't see how they would be able to "prevent them" from switching seats or moving elsewhere in the stadium. and if that doesn't happen, the coaches are either gonna tone it down a bit (dull for the viewers) or put on a show (give it half a match until it trickles through). the outcome will be counterproductive no matter what.

And it gets worse today. Two damn quarters on TV.. Then let's make sure we get little league tons of exposure.. So fucking typical..

As for the mic's in the players box.. Depends on how they use it.

Generally, I don't like it. I'm sure the people in the player's box want their privacy and don't want to have to censor themselves for an entire match. The only way that it's a good idea is if it helps to catch illegal coaching.

Is this the best the can do for an MC? :o

You have no idea how much I hate those opening night ceremonies. The U.S. Open might be my least favorite slam simply because of all the gimmicks they have.

Agreed!

I am sure Nadal already knows by now that he just needs to keep hammering that backhand until somebody starts fighting to hold back his tears and consoling himself by reflecting on his past achievements and how fabulous it is to be friends with Anna Wintour.
