Pippo absolutely needs to make the final with the draw he has. His draw is so cakewalk. Crazy Dani also has a very good draw, we'll see if he is healthy enough to take advantage.

Huta Galung has played a lot of matches recently, so it is questionable if he'll be in the shape to play a decent level in this tournament. With that said, Haase has a comfortable draw here.

I hope Steve makes the final (and wins so he can get in the top 100) here but he could have issues with Aguilar and Crivoi.

Pretty decent draw considering that the attention will be on the quallies of the USO.

Pippo and Robin are the favourites to win here. Pippo may find some troubles with Gonzalez or Vanek and possibly in semifinals with Schoorel or Koellerer.

The bottom half of the draw looks more competitive with some good matches in 1st round like the one of Crivoi vs C.Rochus, a potential clash in 2nd round between Darcis and Aguilar who has been playing well lately and Haase and Huta Galung in 1/4.
The semifinal of the botton half looks quite promising with a potential clash between Haase vs Darcis.

Nice to see Hartfield in action again :yeah:

Not sure how much of it was Volandri sucking and Rameez playing well  Rameez doesn't have many good wins in singles, so this would have been a great boost.

Probably Pippo sucking and taking Junaid for granted, but the fact he made it that close even with Pippo sucking is a positive. Pippo at 50% I honestly thought would have beaten Rameez 6-2 6-3 or so. Obviously Pippo I'm guessing thought the same, but Rameez was there to win. At the very least it can give him the confidence that he can take advantage of these players not giving him any credit and sneak some wins.

Robin can cruise easily to the SF, so although he shouldn't be taken to a tiebreak with a player like Aranguren, it doesn't really matter. He's been off a few weeks, need to shake those cobwebs off. Hopefully Steve and Robin play each other in the SF.

Julian is in Geneva, but I'm not surprised about him tailing off. He's really OK but not that great of a player. As far as Tobias, I think he just needs some time adjusting in playing better players. Also, his best surface to me is clay.

Congrats to the two dutchmen. Very good fight of Joăo in 2nd set against a top 100 player, but winning more points in 2nd wasn't good enough, unfortunally... But keep up the good work!

Well done Thomas and Robin! :D Unlucky for Sousa! If u look at the stats u can see he played a good match... GL in quarters Schoorel and Haase!

Sousa did good to keep that second set close. Schoorel did a good job of winning that third set, after he could have won in straights. I'm thinking he'll play Pippo in the SF. Congrats to Robin on the victory, I don't think he's playing his best tennis, but he's got the job done so far.

People on here tend to underrate Joăo Sousa. His game is very good to watch and he has tons of raw talent. If he can overcome the typically Portuguese weak mentality syndrome that Leo Tavares used to have he's going to be VERY good.
Tavares, by the way, is much more skilled than Machado and Gil put together and everyone who follows Portuguese tennis knows this quite well - but he had been the most injury-plagued and unmotivated player I've ever seen for years.

Completelly agree, although I have to say that Machado has a very good raw tallent as well. The irony of all of that, is that (for me) Fred is the least ra talented of top 4 portuguese players, but very good mentally, and having no injuries in his career, very helfpful, as well. About Sousa, he is still very young, and undoubtful, a top 100 prospect, even a top 50 if he became a good player in terms of mentallity...

08-26-2010, 09:04 PM
Indeed. Gil is very weak skill-wise, the most of these 4 by far - he's just the complete opposite of what a Portuguese is supposed to be (that is, a fiery hot-blooded latin all dependant on emotions). He's awesomely solid both mentally and tactically.
Rui is quite okay mentally though, that loss to Gil at Estoril brought him down for a while but that rematch some weeks ago put it back in place. I rate him WAY higher than Gil in terms of pure tennis ability, as you say.
As for Leo, he's been a complete mess. Early on their careers he used to mop the floor on the national competitions with Gil, Machado, whoever else... but then again, sigh. Me, you, and every other Portuguese tennis fan knows it well enough. It was frustrating.

Joăo is a completely different thing, he left pretty early for Spain. But well.. that mentality is getting there, and the proof is that he's doing the transition to challengers pretty smoothly after his load of consecutive Future titles. I saw him last year at Estoril and he looked totally down. No emotion at all, 80% of his groundstrokes were netted. Glad he's got that worked on..

A while ago, I saw him hitting on Sorana Cirstea on a certain social network site! He deserves my support solely due to the good taste on women.

I'm not gonna derail this chat topic anymore though.. :p

Haase's form makes him a clear favorite, specially since Pippo isn't the player he was some years ago.

on clay, in a good day crivoi could beat any player outside the top 30!
for instance last year crivoi beat james blake. i know blake isn`t quite a clay player, but still.
moreover, just two weeks before soderling`s amazing tournament in roland garros(last year) he had a very difficult match with crivoi. He won in the decisive set
So, don`t make big plans for Haase. Like you did yesterday for darcis. You said it would be an easy game for him, but remember, crivoi is a very though opponent on clay!
P.S. last year, crivoi was in top 80, but he had some problems. His actual ranking doesn`t reflect the realitiy. he has the game for top 100

brizzi -cruggers looks like a tricky one

Crugnola is the better player. I have no clue how Brizzi was able to beat Volandri. I like Alberto, but he's very limited in his abilities. I guess Pippo played an appalling match to hand Brizzi the win. Marco has the game to be in the Top 150, but the mindset of a first grader. While this is a match he should win, and his performance this week suggests that he will, Brizzi has been quite solid this year and that could be decisive. I don't really know who to go for here.
