Grigor is starting to really play well, dropping down to the futures level was the correct decision. He should only play weak challengers and futures and then raise when he is 100% ready, and his ranking is sufficient.

I am just back from Geneva Challenger. The best match of the day was undoubtedly Dimitrov vs. Stebe. Grigor really played well during that match (seems sometimes he has the same shots as Federer.) but Stebe made a good match as well but could not do anything against Grigor. The only weakness of Grigor was a lack of regularity with his backhand especially when returning serve.

Thank you for the report! That sounds about right for Grigor, his backhand is inconsistent, his return of serve can be downright awful at times, but he has a lot of talent and skill, and can do a lot of different things on the court. At his best he's better than these week challengers, Stebe is only 19 so not really prepared to handle a player of Grigor's caliber when playing well. He's always had those comparisons with Roger and I think it's hurt him because of the amount of pressure that brings, but now that his hype has died down and the spotlight is off of him a bit, he's playing much better. Hopefully it continues.

I think Santi doesn't care anymore. Maybe he should stick to doubles...

He should stick to doubles, or if he is injured, then don't play at all, or just play doubles for less stress on the body. What I've seen the past couple of weeks from him is disgusting and his effort is non-existent. His ranking is about to drop dramatically so he better find some spark.

Filo V.
08-24-2010, 04:48 PM
Fucking bullshit. And it's like any serve that's hit even decently is a struggle for Santi to return. He has absolutely no movement, reactions or agility. He looks old as hell on the court, a lot like how Beto looked, and then Beto retired. All of these Spaniards in Ventura, Martin, Hernandez, Navarro, are falling by the wayside. I just hope he can figure it out for Como and Seville and maybe sneak a top 100 finish at the end of the season.

What a shame he couldn't complete that comeback from 1-5 down in the tie-break. Anyway, another good week for Eric :yeah:

Dimitrov is this year's Brown for Goffin.

Shit returning from Grigor, but the rest was good.

This is a great performance for Grigor till now. He looked really happy at the end of he match. The guy has a great serve and good groundstrokes but looks quite unsafe when he is being attacked. Definitely returning back to play and winning Future events helped on his confidence. Good to see him playing well.

Although Andujar will be the favourite to win tomorrow that will be interesting to see what Grigor can do against a more experienced player and who plays really well on clay.

Andujar might be the biggest loser ever at the challenger level. Today he wasted a double break advantage in the final set, including a 40-0 at 3-2. I disliked him before this match, but now I hate him even more.

Dimitrov deserved the win.

This is a great victory for Grigor in all means of the word: Not only is going to help him to be ranked close to the top 200 and allow him to focus in many Challenger tournaments but even more important I hope it can help him to understand that he is a big project and has the tennis to be a good player. Of course that he needs to develop on several issues of his game but confidence is the key right now.

He looked so happy at the end of the match as he would had won The French Open :). I`m very happy for him.

Congrats Grigor on the first challenger title! Amazing fight back from Grigor after Pablo had a chance to get to 4-0 in the third. He's still inconsistent and his game in general has rough edges, but the talent is clearly there and the confidence is probably at an all-time high, and that proved itself today. He's inside the top 200 now, and will be able to play qualifying at slams, a major progression.

Good riddance Pablo.
