Match of chances lost and chances taken. Glad Soderling was of the latter. :yeah:

Gulbis had this one on the racket with one set up and multiple breakpoints in 2nd.

Some powerful hitting there and some stupid errors, quite good overall, but not spectacular

Gulbis is the up and coming dropshot master

Robin was rusty to start, looked better and better as the match went on. Gulbis served spectacularly at times.

Gulbis had successful clay court season, I'm afraid now he comebacks to his old bad habits :o

From what I saw, both players were holding serve until the server had a meltdown and the set was decided there.

Gulbis gifted the break in the third with very stupid mistakes, bashing the ball into the net when a safer shot would've been better.

I'm a fan of both so the result was kinda irrelevant for me, though I have Robin winning the tournament in the draw challenge... :p

:scared: Soderling saved 4 BPs in the second. Gulbis was the better player at that time and was serving great.
And then Robin got 1 BP and got the break out of nowhere.
In the end of the third Gulbis couldn't move cause he got cramps so the break was expected.

In short: Soderling was lucky. Glad he won, though.

Good job dumping routine shots into the net to give up the break Gulbis.

Gulbis played a horrendous game to get broken in the 3rd set. He had so many chances in the second set, many chances to break but he couldn't convert. Clutch play from Robin and he'll be glad to get through that one

Gulbis may have gotten more consistency in his game but he will always be a mental mug. Good that the former mental mug Soderling beat the current one, but Soda was never as clownish as Gulbis.

Gulbis obviously had cramps, he went all out on the second serves and just wanted to end the points at any cost.

robin's draw is brutal

R1-bye
R2-gulbis
R3-nalbadian
QF-murray
SF -rafa Nadal
F- Federer / Djokovich

wasn't rafa involved in the draw ? makes sense lol

but seriously..this is draw from hell (on current form of the opposition)

If sod wins this tournament beating all of the above names its gonna be heck of an achievement...

But I think Nalbandian takes him out .....

I agree, I think the mental part of his game will always be his biggest weakness, unless something changes. He has so much potential, but truth be told, I don't think he has enough passion or focus for this game.

gulbis played real well first set, 60% of his serves weren't even returned by soderling but after that soderling won a heavy majority of all rallies. well played from both

Winning ugly. That's why he is a Top10-er these days. Nice job, Robin.

Got the score right and the number of games. :)

Well done from Gulbis considering it was only his 4th match since he came back from injury break last may.

Only 3 points separated them. Gulbis had 93% 1st serve in the first.
Late night match could have bothered his fitness and cramp in the calf limited his game in the 3rd.
Played toe to toe, it could have gone either way.

Improvement: Gulbis fought 'till the end and no racket throwing. :worship:

Ernests!:awww: Good effort! He tested Robin more than I expected.
Good luck with the rest of that hellish draw Robin!:)

Really tough loss for Ernests. 1 for 7 on BPs. :( He should have won easily in the 2nd but just ran out of gas. Look out when he finally gets back his on court fitness after being out for so long!

OT: There was a nice graph during the match (I saw it for the first time), which shows how flat are Soda's shot in reality.

Average ball altitude above the net:

Soderling - 55 cm
Gulbis - 72 cm

Soderking!!!

Ernests! Looked great day. Good luck in ongoing comeback against anyone other than Soda, Nole and Nalby. :D

I hate this draw! Soderking possibly against Nalby in R16??!! :spit:

I don't know, even during David's good runs, he has had many of his issues playing against big hitters, so I expect Robin to possibly pull it out in 3.

Awesome match. Really enjoyable to watch. I think Soderling deserved the win though looked much more solid in baseline rallies which just edged him the match

Awesome? I think it was a sub-par match overall, a lot of it had to do with good serving however. It got better and better for each game though.

There was some incredible shotmaking from both these two. Ernests just ran out of gas and had some cramping in the 3rd set. He had all the chances in the 2nd, though.. :sobbing:
