Great win for the Ontarian.

Peter :worship: he played very well, and didn't show any of the mental wobbles that he's seemed to struggle with. I thought he might falter when he had BPs against at 7-6 1*-0, but he pulled through :D

Great playing by Peter.

And below just a tribute to the most clueless poster on MTF.

he got to the 2nd round because he beat another canadian player

peter hasnt done anything this year to deserve one. The wild cards would have been fine with dancevic, raonic and duclos and let peter qualify

and really peter is only the canadian number one by rank, he's# 3 at best in terms of talent

dancevic and roanic were expected

polanksy confuses me because he has done NOTHING this season so he should have been made to qualify, i dont care if he is the canadian # 1

peter has no chances against jurgen melzer, the guy has been on fire lately

Clueless posters? Clueless is anyone who thinks running these guys out there every year is good for them...clearly it has not worked.

Truly unbelievable. Melzer caught a dream draw to at least make it into the 3rd round at Toronto, as Polansky has only advanced past the 2nd round of a challenger twice this year. Great win and congrats to Peter for winning a Master's Series event in his home province, but Melzer had to have come to North America unprepared...

Probably a fix by the Canadian officials.
They have to have a Canadian in the second round to make canadaian tennis look any good.
Too bad they didn't fix the Raonic match. Milos is the only near decent thing Canada has in tennis apart from Daniel Nestor.

If not, then Melzer should be ashamed of himself.
Utterly disgusting loss.
Absolutely pathetic, losing to a challenger level player in a masters tournament.

Please tell me how my post is the fail here????????????
The only fail here is that Jurgen Melzer managed to lose to the 200th ranked challenger player in a masters tournament, in straights.
Actually, you fail for even suggesting my post was a fail, failure.
You fail.

Just ignore him. The absurdity of someone from the UK passing judgement on other nations when it comes to sporting performance - particularly tennis - is beyond ridiculous.

You cannot seriously suggest it was FIXED? Peter played very well actually, and deserved to win. It's not his fault Melzer couldn't step it up..

It wasn't fixed but it was obvious Melzer didn't want to be there. Dunno if he tanked on purpose or not, but he definitely put up no fight when Polansky repeatedly choked in the 1st and when he was serving for the match at 4-5 in the second. All credit to Polansky, the talent gap between him and Melzer is so huge he had to play the match of his life to win against a tanking Melzer, but let's not get carried away at this win or jump down 25 to life's throat.

good for the pole or canadian or whatever country polansky comes from, I don't care since probably Hanescu's gonna destroy him, but the bad thing comes from that ridiculous player named Melzer, I mean, the fact that he is ranked 15° makes clear that ATP rankings are like WTA ones

Pole is extremely insulting, please say Polish if you refer to people from Poland. Also, he's not from Poland.. He is born and raised in CANADA.

In English its commonplace to refer to a person from Poland as being a "Pole". Polish is more of an adjective.

-ski(changed to sky) is a common ending for a polish name so most likely his ancestors were polish.

People from Poland are called Poles, nothing insulting about that. Though Polansky is Canadian.

Melzer wrote in his blog that he got sick after Umag and was unable to properly train for the transition to hard court. I guess that explains his poor play. Polansky did well to take advantage.

His parents were born in Poland and emigrated from what I recall, same as Alexandra Wozniak's and Phillip Bester's (actually Bester was born in Germany where they lived first). It's obvious we cheer in PL on people who have our blood in their veins (despite my flag I'm a... uhmm... Pole) though it annoys the shit out of me how they write in our papers "Karolina Woźniacka." Yes, she's hanging out with Polish camp, also with Polish journalists, she won a junior championship of PL, but when her family wanted to sign her up as a Polish representant she was BLOODY DENIED by the federation!!!! So I wish someone finally stopped that circus and let her be called Caroline Wozniacki. Totally pathetic...
