Toronto Qualies: Smyczek def. Golubov 7-6(5) 6-3!

Smyczek is showing some good game recently. Golubov is #37 in the world, so this is probably his best win ever. I guess his good showing against Murray in LA wasn't a fluke. He's got a great shot at a US Open WC if he keeps this up. Anderson is up next.

On a side note, anyone know how to pronounce Smyczek? I've seen him play in person but don't remember how the umpire was saying it.

Nicely done but if golubev didn't have that run in hamburg it wouldn't have as big as a surprise

Golubev is trash.
He fluked that Hamburg title, and won't do anything else of note for a long time.

It's time you stopped hating everyone besides Mugray and Wozniacki.

Another great victory following the ones he achieved in Los Angeles. Hope he can make it in the main draw

Good win for Smyczek, and I don't think it would come as a huge shock to anyone should he also win against Anderson and make it into the main draw...

Hey Chip, it is pronounced "Smee-check." Some of his buddies on the challenger circuit call him "Smeets."

smyczek sounds like a polish last name, if so, the y isn't pronounced so long. Should be like a short i.

"Smee" is also a common nickname for him

Instead playing doubles in Washington SF (with Istomin against Berdych/Stepanek), Golubev has prefered playing qualies in Toronto! It seems he was simply tired after all roads and airports ...
