Berdych did it! Knew he could. Played within himself and kept the pressure on. Widening any developing cracks in Federer's game.

Sasly Federer is in decline. He has moment of brilliant, but the consistency is gone. The First serve is ineffective, his play during key point is a problem.

Forehand just can't deliver the goods anymore.
Backhand just doesn't cope with the pressure.

Returning, by far the thing that is getting worse!!!!
Movement, one step too slow.

Berdych played all over Federer - made him look slow and really ordinary. Berdych served well, Federer did not. Berdych looked like a rabbit out there for a big man, running balls down, doing the splits, getting balls back into play, breaking serve.... just a great performance and I'm so very glad for him that he didn't choke and gift the match to Federer like so many before him. The passion is sadly lacking in Federer's game - the magic is gone. Shame. Hope he can do something to get the motivation back - maybe get a coach or something.

Birdy is the deserved winner. The one that goes for the shots and makes the plays shall win.

Fed to passive, keeping the ball in play won't win you any more Slams, old man.

Federer just hasn't the needed bite in his game anymore to win the big matches.
I still believe he can come back and win a Slam but the dominant old Fed is gone.

I actually think maybe Roger would have better lost in that first round scare.Maybe he needed a shock THAT strong to get his game back.
By the way I really hate the late success boring,tall,flat-all-bashers,serve-bots (soderling,berdych,....) are having and hope it ends real soon.If this fashion becomes a tennis era,the only tennis I'll be watching will be on my VHS.

Federer was passive throughout and it was good to see that it didn't cut it today. Berdych stepped up and unusual that a forehand other than Federer's was the decisive factor but that's the way it was. Great performance and career best performance at Wimbledon to go with the one at the French. Mature :yeah:

fucking smelly little sluts on court 1 cheering like mad when match result came up :retard:

Fed needs to work on his game. No more "We'll see at USO." He needs to do it now, not another 6 month layover. His movement is bad and FH cannot penetrate through grass anymore and his 2nd serve is a liability against tall guys. This match was a lot closer than some think, Fed dropping the topspin BH and bringing out the slice near the end, also going for more on FH to earn breakpoints in several late games, but he couldn't pull the trigger to secure one. In part, that was Berdych serving big when he needed it and showing some variety. Hopefully Berdych can handle Nole in a few days.

Firmly behind Murray now.

Last game showed the entire match. BP to probably win in 5, and Roger dumps a super easy fh return into the net. Berdych was by far the better player, and Roger couldn't get his shots in at all or expose Berdych's mobility or height. Terrible performance, but Berdy totally deserved it.

This is Murray's best chance to win Wimbledon so far, especially since it looks like Nadal is going out next. Would like Berdych to realize his full potential but I think he's going out next round :o

He's playing like he did before he won his first slam... if only marginally better. Fact is, something is missing from his game - maybe the love is gone. Oh well, he could walk away now and it would be perfectly okay. I'd rather that then see him decline any further.

Amazing how when the fall comes it comes so fast. All these insane h2hs getting reversed, all these records falling in a matter of months, Fed sucking on all surfaces, etc. Roger hope you can collect yourself and realize your limitations to get a few GS more out of your old body.

Fantastic performance by Tomas, it wasn't just his great serving, but about everything in his game worked well today, passing shots, great FHs, ROS, etc. Federer barely got any chance to do something back (and if he did, he blew it :o). Intelligent tactics too, and no brainfarting - but that's something I've been noticing about the fellow for quite a while now. He's upped so much in the mental department, looks like he's finally meeting the expectations set upon him from a very young age. Well-deserved congrats! :hatoff: :yeah:
I only hope he won't blow it against Djoko now - please, go all the way, Tomas! :rocker2:

Feds... it's sad to see, but your Great Days are genuinely OVAH.
Oh well. All good things come to an end, eventually.
But where's the passion gone? Why all those idiotic lame ROS on 2nd serves? Forgot the memo that said, "2nd serve = ATTACK!!!"?
I wonder if we'll be seeing a change in attitude from him now, if he'll continue playing as sulky and slow, or whether a bit of the fire might return... somehow I doubt it.

bit sad to see fed lose here, berydich should have choked but that would not help him. Birdy played very well. Fed played fairly well too, when it counted Fed's level instead of going to great dropped to medicore. Like in the final service game, has BP Birdy getting tight, 2nd serve, easy return, Fed dumps FH return into net. that sums it up nicely.

Berdych played an excellent standard of tennis. Hitting well and cleanly off both sides, even had a bit of variation.

Federer was passive at times, used his slice backhand only sparingly when Berdych was hitting through him and his forehand was over the place, due to he is a step slower these days and naturally that is going to impact on the length of his shots. Berdych was aggressive and clearly was better today.

One of the best and most complete matches of his career. His play in the second half of the fourth set, from 3-3, 0-40, was just stunning. What offense AND defense. His defense-to-offense saved his ass from going down double break point in the last game.

It's all the Sampras route from now on. He may pick up one or two more GS titles, if all stars aline, but it might take him a couple of more years to do so, like Sampras at age 31 - if he keeps on playing, of course.

Yeh feds strength never was his mentality or his ability under pressure, sure he had times to show he had some strength there but mostly such was his game he didn't need those strengths because he blew everyone of the court.

With the drop back from Jesus fed i think we are seeing that mentally federer is not the GOAT.

To me it seemed like he had an injured lower body. He was limping sometimes between points and stretching by squatting too.

I agree. I've thought all tournament he had something wrong, because his serve and strokes have lacked power.

Indeed Fed has said at his presser that he is in pain (leg/back)

Federer is not the same player he used to be. He doesn't move as well, his return is a lot worse, and he plays the important points horribly.

I used to really enjoy watching Roger play, when he would come up with miraculous shots out nowhere. But these days he isn't even pulling off the makeable shots.

I don't know whether he's physically slowing down, or he's feeling the pressure of the up-and-comers, or if he's got too many distractions off court, or if he is just too stubborn to realize he needs to make some changes.

But there's nothing enjoyable about Federer matches anymore.

I know how this is going to get into an argument about explaining away the loss with an injury. Personally Berdych was too good today and Federer would have had trouble anyway but he's injured so rarely I trust that it had an effect this time. Looked to be having some problems with movement.

Electric show of final respect for Federer from the Centre Court crowd.

The big and beautiful Czech style of tennis is finally delivering on its potential with Berdych and Kvitova. Now if Lucie could have some results at majors I'd be happier.

Yeh feds strength never was his mentality or his ability under pressure, sure he had times to show he had some strength there but mostly such was his game he didn't need those strengths because he blew everyone of the court.

With the drop back from Jesus fed i think we are seeing that mentally federer is not the GOAT.

True. Smapras and for example Nadal are clearly stronger mentally. Federer is the GOAT gamewise but hie mental stability is a bit questionable at times.

Well if he's injured, he's injured. I don't see that as an excuse, though. On the court the better player won. Obviously, Roger needs to go back and do some thinking and maybe come up with a new gameplan. That ROS needs to improve, and he needs to step it up on the big points. I guess he now needs an Agassi-level make-over. I do expect him to win maybe 2 more slams, but even if he doesn't -- he's had an awesome career and watching him has been one of the greatest experiences of my life.

Q. Did it affect your level of motivation or anxiety about the match before the match or in the early stages of the match?

ROGER FEDERER: No, it wasn't that bad, like that I was just hoping to get to the finish line. I mean, once I enter the court, I am there to battle and to try to win with what I got. You know, otherwise I'm not going to walk on the court like I did once in my life prior in Bercy against Blake.

But it's nowhere close to being that bad. It's just uncomfortable. Yeah, like I said, you can't play freely. When you can't play freely, that's the kind of performance you get.

True, but it was clear that is not gonna say he is not 100% cause that would fuel to hope of his opponent. I just want to believe that Federer was not 100%, that gives me hope for the future.
Of course it is true that injuries always turn up after defeats. Feds game dropped strongly since AO.

Yea this is true.

It's kind of a double edged sword. If he's injured, he's injured. If he says something ahead of time he'll be exposing weakness, if he says something after a loss it's sour grapes.

Some of the ue's that Federer was making are things he's been doing for the last couple of months, especially off the return. Perhaps it's the nicks and injuries that tend to happen with aging...who knows.

my answer to this is that he is too stubborn. whatever the reason for it, these type of player(delpo, sod, bird) is now giving him trouble, but he refuses to really adapt. several times today and against sod in the FO he was just content to play into his opponents comfort zone and didnt take any risks when he started losing. he is either low on confidence or too stubborn, which is neither a good excuse. you are right, something is not right and it is called denial.

i know how you feel because i also want to have hope for the future, but we have to look at the truth even of roger refuses to. these ballbashers hit the ball too big for him and unless he faces that fact and do something about it nothing will change. the fact that he now brings up the injury excuse is even more worrying for me. it shows me that he is using a cop out instead of looking what HE did wrong. how many more big losses will it take before he admits that he played a part in it?

disappointing for roger. i really thought he was going to win this one in 4 sets.
but once more, missing simple shots on the big points, he is slower, can not handle the power of the likes of tall players with strong 2 handed backhands like berdych, soderling and del potro, he just got outhit like the match against soderling in French Open QF, nothing else to it.

his game has fallen way off the radar since winning AO, the lung infection he suffered in february really stuffed him up.

full credit to berdych, held his nerve all the way until the very end. :clap2: good luck tomas against novak, will be an interesting SF to say the least.

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I mean, true, Rafa played terribly lately; Soderling is not a threat either. He's got an easy ride to this victory, that's for sure. Djokovic can't play tennis anymore it seems like.

Got to make your own work, please. Respect the players. Obviously Andy is a fantastic player and he's got all the chances to win here. We all know that

So in your opinion, what is he supposed to do?

well just like i said, he should first of all not use any excuses like the conditions at the FO and now the injury. he should rather look at what he could have done better. what you resist persists, meaning that if he thinks its nothing to do with him he wont be inclined to change anything. i think for sure he could have varied things more, take more changes, etc. hes mind is not in a good place right now. he must be honest with himself and then do something about it. maybe get a proper coach even. but he is intelligent enough to know what to do. he must either see it himself or someone must make him see it.

that is what i think anyway.

The upside of Roger's loss is that he's going to be featured in Vogue or something like that?

Cool... He looks great and his hair is perfect.

I digress.

You know it's like this interview with Venus I watched yesterday. People are wondering if she should retire or is thinking about retirement or... whatever.

She responded by saying she still plays tennis quite well, so why should she quit. She said, sure she has bad days. Everybody has bad days. But all in all, she's still competitive.. better than most. She said, she'd quit playing when she's just playing horribly or when she's not having any fun. But right now? Not a chance.

Same with Roger. Sure he's had some adjustments to make in his personal life. His age MIGHT be catching up with him to where he IS injured more--or is feeling his matches a bit more. He might have more bad days than he used to.

But it's not like the guy can't play. I mean.. c'mon.. It was bound to happen sooner or later to where he'd have a lull. And for sure, this would be the time a lull most likely would have occurred... particularly after his success last year and the birth of the twins.

So.. congrats to Berdych and congrats to Roger for another successful Wimby even though he didn't make it to the finals this time. He made it to the quarters, and that's not too shabby.. so.

kinda expected, federer hasn't been convincing in a long time  after the FO, this is another great result for berdych :yeah:

Most undeserving and lucky victory this year. What a dismal level of tennis Federer produced.

errr, if federer's level was "dismal", how was berdych's victory "undeserving"?

06-30-2010, 05:25 PM
Yea this is true.

It's kind of a double edged sword. If he's injured, he's injured. If he says something ahead of time he'll be exposing weakness, if he says something after a loss it's sour grapes.

Some of the ue's that Federer was making are things he's been doing for the last couple of months, especially off the return. Perhaps it's the nicks and injuries that tend to happen with aging...who knows.

Yeah... I personally don't think that 2010 is a well-prepared year for Fed, maybe due to change in his personal life like gf getting pregnant, getting married, having twin new born etc... leading to his bits and pieces of pain or discomfort, i guess... but I sure hope he regroups in US Open and keeps pushing for the GS title record~ cuz will be a while until we have another Roger Federer!

Havent't been able to watch the match so can't comment on it, but we all have seen already 2 years ago that Tomas has the game to beat Roger in a best of 5 match. He is a very good player, not just as we have seen in the past months. It would be a fairy tale if he could win the title and as he is my second favourte player beside Roger I keep my fingers crossed for him now :yeah:

Roger  Unfortunately for a lot of people such losses take away from all the achievements he got in his incredible career and this is the thing which makes me more sad as the loss itself. It's apparently way more easy to downgrade what Roger had done in the last years and which we will probably never see again on a court.

Roger has proven in the past that he can come back from disappointing losses in a GS, but meanwhile his level of play has getting down as expected as this happens to every player.

He has achieved nearly everything in his career and the losses in Paris and Wimbledon now will maybe be a turning point for him to decide if he is willing to change something (which means to get a coach who is used to work with a player in the later days of his career) or if he thinks that all these developments are naturally for a player and he stays with the team he is working with now.

You can work as hard as you used to but when you have been out there to play professional tennis for such a long time it's natural that your body will not always do the things you want him to do. Roger said during the week in Halle that he would feel it that he has played every day. He played in Wimbledon with a bandage and I don't know when we have seen him with one the last time. But when you are out on the court you are fit enough to play. When you get breakpoints you should use them as you can't allow it to waste this opportunities against your opponents.

Roger, have a good rest and I'm sure as soon as you can hug your little girls you will know again that a family counts more as every victory you can get in the most beautiful minor matter of life - sports....

I would like to know why all the Rafahaters who consistently vilify his supposed tendencies to bring up his injuries as an excuse for losing are not holding Roger to the same standard? In an article covering this match on the ESPN website, it is brought up how Roger was "grumpy" and "not as gracious". I think this really reinforces Roger's bad sportsmanship upon losing, and consequently how ridiculous and erroneous the notion that he is such a gracious representative of the sport...lol! Of course it is easy to pretend to be gracious when you are winning all the time; now that he is not anymore, you see his real side, and it is not pretty. (And what are those petty comments disparaging Rafa, who has always been sp respectful to him, as well as Soderling and Djokovic? Pathetic!) Very happy that Berdych (the better player by far) won and that Nadal got through to add insult to injury.

Two game winning streak now against Fed. You were clearly the better player again today and outclassed Fed on the court and off too. Fed is a really sore loser. :p What a press conference.

Now, I will feel good for whomever wins the Semi between you and Nole, but I want to see a Nole/Muzza final, I guess ultimately for the drama. But congrats for turning the corner in your career and I think you are now Top Ten bound at last. Anyway, glad to see so many faves in the Semis. Muzza should take care of Rafa and his RPM blast strings as he is doing now with Tsonga and his Babolat blasts and as he did to Rafa at the AO.

I will be happy if Tomas, Nole or Muzza win this thing. The odds are looking good! :D

I would expect Roger would be a little grumpy... Hey, but at least he waited for the Birdman before leaving the court?

You all have too high of expectations of these athletes sometimes, I think.

I didn't say he should be happy about losing, just that he should be held to the same standard as Rafa with respect to bringing up injuries in press conferences; Rafa gets lambasted but these same people want to give Roger a pass. Moreover, I do not recall Rafa ever, even at his lowest moment, denigrating other players, ala "Rafa's played terrible lately"(a guy who has always been gracious beyond belief to him, even to the point of being more concerned with Roger's feelings during his own victory presentation and who has never said anything negative about him)..."Soderling is not a threat either..."(didn't he just beat Roger at the French? Not a threat?) and "Djokovic can't play tennis anymore it seems like" (oh, well, that is just classy.)

First of all, the Soderling is not a threat and Djoko can't play comments were SARCASTIC. The reporter was asking if Murray could easily win now, and Roger was saying that each player could beat him.
Also, I agree that people need to hold Roger to the same standards as Nadal. Rafa said that after his loss to Soderling that he "played short" so he lost. Is that not an excuse?
