...or he has a nice court game that he hates to display?

A ballbasher with nice strokes.

I don't particularly like him, but I wouldn't call him a ballbasher.

I actually think his strokes look ugly (though nicer than Soderling's :rolls:) but must be just me.

I think he's not one dimensional but hardly an all-court player either.

Oh and is it just me or does half of Berdych's backhands look to be hit near the frame? There's always this odd noise off it that sounds very terrible.

a little more controlled than blake

I think the very term originally used to stand for someone who basically goes for broke no matter the situation. Lately on MTF it has gotten a wider and broader meaning. Now it can also be used to describe someone who constantly hits hard with no real point construction.

Conclusion? There isn't a single player in the top 100 who can be accurately called a ballbasher, but people on here love to keep things simple. If someone plays defensively and tentatively, they push. If someone hits with loads of spin to have a high net clearance, they moonball. If someone hits aggressively, they ballbash. I've seen Del Potro being called a pusher as well as a ballbasher in reference to one single match on here.

It's a funny world we create and live in.

A ballbasher with nice strokes.

This. He has some nice strokes here and there but he's essentially a ball basher.

what is the criteria to be a ballbasher?

How is he a ballbasher?

He doesn't whack the ball from a high position like DPot or Soderling. He actually hits it rather low. He doesn't go for broke on every shot like Blake. Those are true ballbashers.

And Berdych does have variety, off his forehand and backhand. He hits it short and deep off both wings and can mix it up. Dpot or Soderling, even Tsonga, they don't do that.

My question as well. Someone who hits the ball as opposed to gently picking it up, giving it a hug and sending it off in a parachute?

Berd seems to be playing the best grass court tennis at the moment. You're exactly right above and his shot selection has been solid. His transition game has been good. He attacks on the right balls, and dictates the point for a couple shots to set it up.

Berds game is fine right now. If he can hold himself together mentally, he has a real good shot at this title.

His technique is flawless espcially on the backhand, but that doesn't change whether he is a ball basher or not.

I'm amazed Berdych has made it to the semi. He could (unbelievably given he is not suited to grass) potentially win the whole thing.

As much as he irks me, he is not a ballbasher. He's a very talented tennis player, and has graduated to someone with tactical awareness. He's learnt how to utilise his skills effectively, which makes him extremely dangerous.

Berdych isn't a simple ballbasher, he's far too talented to being considered just that, hitting the ball flat, hard and clean doesn't make you a ballbasher.

He deserves a slam at least.

No. A ballbasher is someone who seems to force when he hits the ball like Djokovic did against Nadal in RG or Del Potro when he goes into that mode. For Berdych he can generate big power but it seems so effortless with him, like a normal shot.

No. His hitting patterns are pretty conservative cross-court ones mostly.

He doesn't have the technique of a ballbasher either. Seamless and smooth.

No he is offensive baseliner with power, like Del Potro but little more offensive.

Berdych has the least amount of variety of these 4 big hitters. He also benefited from Soderling hiatus/retirement. I don't rate Berdych and Tsonga as high as Del Potro and Soderling. A lot of people like to group these 4 but for me the order is Del Potro, gap, Soderling, gap, Berdych, Tsonga.

On topic Berdych could be an outright ball basher but he figured his safe shots can do the trick against a lot of players so he is a bit conservative most of the time. Still a consistent powerful hitter.

Berdych has good volleys and serve too.
