this match is so reminiscent of last year's Wimbledon final for Roddick, in both matches he won the 1st set, was one point away from winning the 2nd set and lost it in a TB, lost the 3rd set in a TB, won the 4th set, and served 2nd in the 5th and was the first to crack, Andy

Incredible stuff, Lu was CLUTCH, especially in the 5th serving at *4-4, bp to Roddick, Lu hits a shoe-string volley over the high part of the net to save the break point.

As for Roddick. Too much pushing, which describes every loss of his since 2005.

Credit to Lu, he played above and beyond the call of the duty. That was quite a performance. He had Andy rattled, he just couldn't figure out how to break Lu's serve. Lu came with a game plan, Andy didn't and he got worse as Lu's confidence grew.

Good luck to Lu in the next round, although I have a feeling he'll suffer the usual letdown after such a big win.

Too passive from Andy, just pushing the ball back most of the time wasn´t enough, still had his chances in 5th set but well, couldnt convert all his BPs he had, and in the end it was just not enough.
Well, until her won Miami, Mr. Roddick sucks more or less, curious how he will do on hardcourt but he just has to be more aggressive from the baseline :o

Roddick is my guy but unfortunately I don't see him picking up the pieces this time and regrouping. A guy can only get knocked down so many times before he eventually decides enough is enough and stays down. Sadly I think this loss will mark the end and decline of Andy Roddick.

I have been waiting for this time for so many years!!!!! What a beautiful match today. :D

I don't agree with the Stefanki hate though. There is only so much a coach can do when you're coaching Roddick. It isn't like he has a lot of options or ability. Stefanki should be praised Roddick even got back to winning Master 1000s.

The problem is that Roddick got through Nadal by playing back to his old-school flat style. Stefanki never planned that; Andy did.

Overreaction. Andy is healthy and playing well, for the most part. He has a few more years left in him.

This is suppose to be the only tournament Andy cares about. Can't get over how shocking he was today. WTF is wrong with him?
That's why he lost. He wants it too much. Lu was playing without fear and Andy had everything to lose.

If he loses it will be because he lost to someone who did something other than push the ball side to side and run near the backstop.

Tell me when Roddick wins his 2nd slam?

Tough for Andy, I was really hoping he would have a great run here again...maybe next year. Lu pretty much dominated most of the rallies from the baseline and I wasn't sure how well he'd keep it up mentally, but he sure showed us  . I like his game, his strokes are silky smooth...that serve worried me a bit but Roddick isn't a great returner anyway.

Why the hell even play the French then?

Andy Roddick is a multi-millionaire professional athlete. Playing tennis is his job. That's all he has to do. He's been in the top-ten for how many years now as his camp keeps reminding us? So I am sick and tired of hearing how he can't play on clay. Boo-hoo. Maybe if he learned to play on clay a little bit better it might improve his overall game rather than just relying on his serve. Rafa isn't a grass court player, per se, and he somehow managed to win Wimby. So enough with the "Clay isn't Andy's surface." Boo-hoo-hoo.

I told you all Andy Roddick wasn't winning Wimby this year and more than likely ever.

Yeah, I read it. But I'm replying to your post.

I stand by what I say. I am sick and tired of Andy and his apologists making excuses for Andy's performance at the French.

Like I said, it might behoove Andy to be a bit more competitive at the French rather than putting in a half-assed effort, saving himself for Wimby.

He made it further in the French last year, didn't he? And lo and behold, he made it to the Wimby final.

So maybe it makes better sense for Andy to put a little bit more of an effort at the French even though it might not be his best surface.

I didn't mean he is literally too good on clay. More like he is disrespecting the surface.

And he could certainly win a couple of matches. He is not going to win anything big, that's for sure. But he has a commitment to the ATPtour, to his european fans. Yeah.. he seemed like he was trying to get the crowd into it, so he could draw energy from them. But at one point, he needs to generate his own energy.

I'm disappointed for sure, but for other reasons. Like I said.. I knew it wasn't meant to be this year if ever.

I really think Andy needs to reflect about exactly what HE needs to do. I don't think he's near retirement or anything. That's not what I mean. I really think Andy loves the game. But...there's something missing mentally more than technically. There's always been something missing even though everyone says what a great a competitor Andy Roddick is. I'm not so sure he's a great competitor. Showing frustration or anger is not necessarily being a great competitor.

Well, there's always the U.S. Open.

I think there are benefits to knowing how to compete on clay even though a player might not every "master" it.

Q. So tomorrow when you wake up, you think you're going to be pissed off, disappointed?

ANDY RODDICK: I'm going to be thrilled. I mean, c'mon.

Q. You've been through these slams before.

ANDY RODDICK: And it never gets easier. Of course I'm going to be pissed off when I wake up tomorrow. I mean, if you got fired from your job, you probably wouldn't wake up the next day in a great mood. I mean, c'mon, let's go. We're better than those questions.

All right, thank you.

Oh well, there's always that Rogaine endorsement waiting in the wings for him.

All kidding aside, at this stage he's just content to serve bombs and push the ball around. Perhaps it's better just to go for broke and see what happens. But honestly, I just don't see him recovering mentally from this one.

Is Querrey and Isner really all we have right now? :-(
Not that they're bad players, Isner showed a lot of guts in that marathon match and Querrey seems to be making progress, but at this stage I just think they're both poor-man versions of Todd Martin. Nothing to get excited about.

Why are great entertainers
never on Earth long enough for fans?
Roddick can't play
because he likes the fact that
Asians, Europeans
& Latin players feel responsible for their
actions & he doesn't...
Some players needed to pay for food &
homes for their families.
Roddick just has short-lived relationships,
junk to eat, skank movies &
boorish, repetitive jokes to tell.
No matter what surface he's on,
he's really slow-minded, mentally crippled & an athletic joke.

Seems Roddick still considers sarcasm to be an appropriate method of dealing with tough pressers. For me it's as impressive a method as Sharapova flouncing off. He needs to get over himself and this is coming from someone who likes Roddick.

Yeah it's a part of him though...and I thought he was pretty honest today. There were some sarcastic moments, for instance with this exchange:

ANDY RODDICK: I'm going to be thrilled. I mean, c'mon.

That's just a stupid question...I don't know about you guys, but I would respond sarcastically too when I heard some of these bad questions. He gave plenty of credit to Lu and was blunt in saying that he played like crap at the beginning...

For straight guys, probably the fact that he can never stop playing with himself on court.

For gay guys, there are other reasons.
I consider myself a fan of his less so than in the past. I can't watch him anymore though because he is always fixing himself, he gets so damn sarcastic on court and his play is so damn passive now.
Do you blame the fools?
One has no clue why she married him
On Roddick's retirement day, the massage man will lose his nice salary. Roddick will stop being an arrogant pussy face soon...

I keep thinking you must know more than you will ever tell. Your comments speak as if you have had words with him or his handlers ;) Fess up already will ya so we can understand why you spout what you do. My curiosity is just dying to know.

Yeah... but you know.. I can't really put my finger on it, but there's nearly like Andy is playing a role.. not a victim exactly, but it's like we reward him for his "honesty," but does he ever really learn from being in these situations?

Sure we expect Andy to get all pissy to a reporters stupid question, but that's just it. I'm getting to the point where it doesn't really mean anything but a laugh. In other words, just answer the question, Andy.

I can't really explain it,but it's just par for the course.

Nothing new. Nothing new from the die-hard fans either.
Even reporters know he's not
smart enough to be upset
before having to play Federer.
Roddick lost fans; he overstayed his welcome...
Arod's inappropriate sarcasm is reason
for Lu's good attitude...I would waste my life on poems. LMFAO

Gutted for Roddick, but I have to take my hat off for the little man. He played well but above all, he played bravely. No whining, no shameless choking, just pure heart and will out there. Congratulations. :yeah:

GREAT POST! I couldn't put it better. Little people, like me, have a new hero-LOL!! I used to like Andy, but lately, he has become a nasty complainer. Now Lu beat Nole, another player I have come to like less than I used to.

Yeah.. he seemed like he was trying to get the crowd into it, so he could draw energy from them.

Open.

I think what is missing is belief in himself, real, core belief not just 'thinking positively'. I didn't think he would actually win the tournament this year although I and apparently so many others wanted it badly I didn't think he would because deep down I felt HE didn't think he would. There are ways to deal with that but I don't know if Roddick would be open to working on it, many people aren't. Ho hum. I was having an awesome Wimbledon until this......

What a great moment for Lu and Asian tennis! He fully deserved to win the match today and even though his performance in this tournament was a bit of a bolt out of the blue, for me he did enough in his first round loss at Wimbledon last year to signal that he has a solid grass coult game. Good luck against Djokovic in the QF, Rendy :)

I do feel genuinely sorry for Roddick - not that he deserved to win today, but I felt he could reach the semis at the least. His Wimbledon dream may not be over just yet, but he desperately needs to reassess his game. Being a powerful player with such a good serve, its a shame his groundstrokes lack enough 'bite'. Still I hope he can have a run for the title before he retires, a la Ivanisevic.
