Melzer must be glad that that's the first time they've played on tour.

Not really. Federer was not blasting winners. He was playing solid, keeping the ball in play. Not JesusFed for sure.

The first really convincing performance from Federer here at Wimbly! :yeah: :hatoff:
I'd say B-level, did what needed to be done against a truly miserable Melzer, who, as Sophocles said so well, 'seemed to have missed Rafa's memo'. Didn't come to the party at all, maybe the heat played a role in that?
I expected a lot better from him...

Glad to see Feds serving well, ROS was aggressive this time, no brainfarts, in all, pleased to see this.
I'm getting back a little hope. :D

Compared to what we've been seeing recently from Fed, maybe I exaggerated a bit.

2007-8 Fed might be more accurate.

Well played Mr. Federer :worship:

If he plays like that he has little to fear on grass.

Federer was not nearly as underwhelming as people are suggesting here, but sure, he can get better.

Yeah it was good stuff from Fed; nice to see sharp returns, the main barometer of his form. Melzer didn't do enough backhand hammering.

As expected, he is just getting better and better every match which is why I wasn't really worried that he was so poor the first two rounds. It is always certainly better and easier to start bad and end up strong rather than starting strong and trying to end up strong.

that's more like it, Berdych will be harder for sure and Fed hasn't been playing well when he is put under pressure for a while now, that match will tell us more about Fed's chances for a 7th Wimbledon title.

Best return performance in a while, was pretty much breaking when he wanted like in the good old days. Still needs to be even more offensive, in the past he was unbeatable on grass because every shot he made was an offensive one and was hitting the ball with great anticipation.

A disappointing effort from Melzer. His shot selection was suicidal. There were a number of occasions on which he could have gone to Federer's backhand, but Melzer went to his forehand instead. Melzer completely squandered his lefty advantage.

Federer played well, but it's tough to say just how good he was. Better players than Melzer or players who have strategic savvy will get Federer wide on his backhand and exploit his slower movement, not hit the ball to his forehand and allow him to tee off.

Another joke of a match. Melzer is a clay courter. Lucky to get to the Round of 16. The orzanizers were totally unfair with this draw. You can't stop the beast of the bottom draw. You will eventually have to play one. The finals is where Federer loses.

It used to be that the straight set easy ones came in R1 and R2 and the long drawn 5-setters and tbs came up later. That was soooo 2004...

My impression was that Federer played in his safe-mode: He didn't go for much on his shots, especially on the forehand, which looked rather tame.
I suppose it's a good tactic vs an error-prone Melzer, but I think he'll have to be more aggressive if Berdych plays well. At best, Berdych will wake him up like he did in that 2009 AO match or like Andreev did at the US Open 2008 - at worst, he'll lose in 4 sets or so.

Neither guys played their best. But Fed's average play is still >>> Melzer's average. Fed's serve, ros, bh were clicking, still needs to work alot on fh, it's so erratic and powderpuff now.

Berdych up next, Rog needs to come out as JesusFed or else...
