Stopped watching this after the tiebreak in the second. Monfils had two great opportunities on set points, but instead of taking iniative he chose to just keep returning balls to Hewitt right down the middle of the court, short, and of perfect height for Hewitt to pounce on. Mug, that's never going to achieve anything.

Yeah unfortunately Gael among many things is a very poor tactician, if only he played a more sound tactical game given his physical prowess and natural athleticism, he would be challenging for big titles.

Monfils is a pusher who's spraying UEs all around the court. I can't with this uselessness of him :sobbing:

i don't actively hate many players but monfils is one i really do, what an idiot so glad hewitt beat him in straights.

Monfils is truly one of the biggest mugs around. That tiebreak was the epitome of brain dead tennis.

I wouldn't exactly say Hewitt was playing grass court tennis out there.

While I'd agree that it wasn't traditional grass court tennis, 46 net approaches is pretty good going for a grass court match these days. Also, good use of the slice.

Hewitt was good for the most part out there, though up until 8-9 in the tie-break he looked pretty poor and Monfils could really have made him pay! There was also a lapse in set 3 to throw away the break. Monfils certainly plays nothing like Novak so I expect a totally different match on Monday. Lleyton is capable of advancing but I reckon Novak is due a big win. Hope I'm wrong about that though. Come On Lleyton!

I don't understand how Monfil's coach is still with him.

Gael was never going to take out an in-form Hewitt on grass playing so defensively (same story as always), but the second set obviously wasn't out of his reach. Returning from somewhere in the vicinity of the service line on Hewitt's second serve might have helped, but it's a tough habit for Gael to break.

Hewitt seems much quicker on his feet than this time last year.
