The End Of The Grand Slam Advantage Set?

As compelling as the Isner/Mahut 59-59 fifth set is, I'm afraid that this episode will hasten the end of the advantage set in grand slams. But will it be replaced by a strict tie break set, or some sort of extended 12/12 tie break set, or some other configuration?

I'm in favor of the advantage set, but it may not last much longer.

Knee jerk reaction.

How many of these threads are needed? The answer does not change, NO to TB in the decider. It should be a real battle, more than lottery.

some kind of super tiebreak in deciding sets it's not a bad idea.
I'm just wondering myself which option will be the best for both players and fans

With both Isner and Mahut starting out fresh today, and neither exhibiting an ability to break the other, this could go another day.

No, no, no, no you are talking about 1 match, 1 match out of a bazillion that have gone on to a 5th set and they didn't need a TB. Like someone said a knee jerk reaction to 1 match. Have some perspective about the sample size.

Seriously it's staggering, I think they're just annoyed it's getting so much coverage. Just because there hasn't ever been 10 consecutive games without a service break on the WTA tour. :o

They have a 5 page thread about Serena's curtsy for christ sake, what do you expect? LOL! I won't hijack this thread any longer though carry on.

If the Tsonga Dolpogolov match goes to 59-59 in the 5th set, yes, it will be ended

Surprisingly, it seems we're saved from that fate :D You'd expect once these two supermen showed it can be done, it would become a common occurrence :p

To me this match is not even good anymore. These sorry excuses for players need to find a return game. It's record-breaking but that's it, that's all. If I weren't a tennis fan, it sure wouldn't make me one.

I do not agree at all. Both of these guys are serving extremely well. Into the body, hitting the corners. What exactly is the returner supposed to do? There is a reason the server is considered to have the advantage in tennis. Both of these guys are just holding serve equally well. It's pretty insane.

Plus how many people actually return serve well against Isner anyways? Murray?

Such rubbish, they are near impossible and very difficult to break respectively. There's no saying what even better returners would be able to do at this point. These guys are serving at almost 70% first serves after all this time. To say that's impressive is an understatement of the century.

I'll say it again ... It's record breaking but that's it, that's all. And yesterday, neither one of them were willing to put forth the type of energy on return game because they wanted to save what little energy for serving. Greatness is never achieved without taking risks. That along with the fact that these guys are broken numerous times by other players proves that they are not unbreakable. Come on son ... gone somewhere with that

This match is bringing some attention to tennis but other than that, it's making no one run to the tv screens. Definitely not in the US...

Well, that's certainly crucial.

As for the rest, I'd venture to say you haven't watched this at all. At least, that's the only explanation I have for claim they didn't put much effort into return games. FFS, Mahut was diving for ball that he was not going to catch, and even if he was Isner would have an easy volley, all of it at 58:58. That kind of spirit is precisely why this is not merely a record breaker. Get a clue.

No.

Leave it how it is. How many of these are there? Seriously, if this was a common occurrence then change the rule. But long 5 set matches are only a handful throughout decades.

The US is very crucial ... Tennis is DEAD here & whether people like it or not, if you're a fan of tennis, you definitely want it thriving in this country.

Even with this supposedly, match of a lifetime, it's getting just a small blimp on sports talk radio (people happy it's over) - even with it including an American. It's just sad ... These players don't matter & their games are not compelling.

Sports channels on TV in the US have been covering it quite a lot I thought along with discussing about Federer's chances, etc. I think they have covered it enough. Of course tennis should be popular here in the states, but tennis is pretty popular here in Arizona and California IMO.

that will be the end of tennis........what is tennis without dramas like the one we had over the last 3 days? us open, the worst slam by far in my books, has already clowned some of the grandslam aura with the inception of tiebreaks and sat-sun finishes........

If it means introducing 5th set TB everywhere, or compromising the game in any other way, no I don't want it thriving in your country. I suspect it will do just fine with it's current popularity over the ocean.

Well, I personally found Mahut's game compelling for a long time, far before this match ever took place. An extremely likable guy with an extremely fun game. Either way, your desire to undermine their herculean effort, as well as the attention it attracted, is just :worship:

NO surprise that a sport that requires athleticism is dead in the US.

We'll keep the 5th set as they are, and the Americans can go and watch their obese 'athletes' playing rounders and gridiron. :p
