Is Federer still the title favorit?

Navratil

I think the way Federer has been treated in this forum the last months is not fair. He's still # 2 in the world and lost in the quarters of the French-Open - he's least favorite Slam - against the eventual finalst, the guy he beat the year before to win all the Grand-Slam titles at least once. Remember how inconsistent Sampras has been! Federer has a few years at the very top ahead of him. His results in the past were unbelievable and he set up a very high standard. But he's only human! Let him lose once in a while. ;)

And on grass he came into the tournament as a heavy favorit. Though Nadal won the title two years ago, he's no that threatening on grass as on clay. :D

But now that Federer struggled against Falla in the first round (and ALMOST lost that match) - is he still the favorit to win? Who can stop him?

The draw is actually not that bad (including Falla in the first round - a guy he destroyed two weeks ago in Halle/Westfalen, Germany).

2nd round vs Bozoljac - handsome but harmless
3rd round vs Clement or Luzcak - no threat either
4th round vs Lopez or Melzer (?) - a little bit tougher but by then Federer should have found his
rhythm - so no problem
Quarterfinal vs Berdych ? - getting tougher
Semifinal vs Hewitt, Djokovic or Roddick?
Final vs Nadal or Murray???

Who knows how hard the draw is now, considering Federer was supposed to have an easy 1st round. Even Bozoljac could be tough, he's 6foot4 and good at tie-breakers. I enjoy watching the Roddick vs Federer matchup and the Hewitt vs Federer matchup, so I hope he makes it that far.

Of course he is, the chance was there to knock him out while his play was awful, and Falla didn't take it.

He'll make at least the Semi's and you'd always back him at that stage of the tournament.

Are you serious? The point is that these days absolutely ANYONE can stop him if he plays like he did yesterday and has been playing for much of 2010. Unlike Nadal who at least forces you to actively win the match, Federer is basically gifting matches away this year by playing without his usual power, without his usual consistency and without any hint of his old confidence.

Federer is still the best when he shows up - like he did at the AO - but who knows when he's showing up and when he isn't? His patchy form no longer seems to be confined to tournaments outside of the slams.

The matchup is bad. Mika can't rally and with Roddick playing percentage plays left right and center Roddick should pass relatively easily.

I've seen several people calling a certain someone else the defending champion. ;)
Nothing lasts forever, and results from the past are no guarantee for whatever will happen in the future - especially not when in such a decline as Federer apparently is right now. Okay, lest suddenly Jesus!Fed appears again, of course. Not counting on it.

Those "several people" are clearly trying to wind some of the Fedtards up, and quite amusingly it appears to be working :p I'm sure Rafa sees it in his own mind as a title "defence" though, which is a good thing. Anyway, noone said anything about guarantees, but I still think it's brash to call anyone besides Federer the favourite yet until such time as he potentially meets Nadal in a final, in which case there will be some debate.

Before the tournament started I had Fed going as the fave and even voted for him in the WWW Wimbledon thread and put 10k of vcash on him but now I'm starting to feel that Nadal is the slight fave.

I still think Federer can pull it off, though. From now on he should play better than in the first round. However, if he plays Nadal in the final I won't like his chances very much.

i think this is roddicks year to shine. dream draw really and he just has to pass federer with some smart plays and some sharp mental skills. if he fails mentally he might not win. and then we go downhill from there and to use the dumbass cliche, its a slippery slope down.

Perhaps. I cant really comment with certainty because I didn't watch it. But Federer struggling against a guy ranked outside the top 100 sure is rather odd. If to that we consider that the needed 5 sets to beat Falla then I guess things don't look too good.

I'm still holding Fed as favorite, with Nadal 2nd. That is not the same as thinking they will win it, far less is it saying they will do so easily. Mostly what it means is that they are the guys to beat if someone else wants to take the crown. Murray or Roddick are the most likely to do it, with Soderling coming behind but still with chances. Anybody else I'd take as a huge surprise.

Still, the fun lies in the surprises, now doesn´t it?

No, I don't think he is the favourite. He has been poor for most of the year, either from lack of motivation or inability to play good tennis. He has relied on his serve for a long time, and his groundstrokes have been shakey and unreliable. Losing to players who he could beat without being in danger of losing a set to, and during this Wimbledon his level has been awful. Almost losing against Falla, and then struggling against Bozo was even worse than I expected of his poor form. I didn't think I would see Fed struggling to beat players who don't have any relevance on the challenger tour, let alone in a slam. Add to that, Nadal is in the tournament and I would pick to win against Federer on grass. I also think that if Fed is still classed as the favourite, it would show a huge weakness in the game.
