I don't see how this is very surprising. I picked Wawrinka but Istomin had quite a good grass season leading up to this.

Stan prepared for Wimbledon by playing a clay challenger. Istomin has shown major potential these last weeks on grass. So, this result is not only not an upset, but it was expected.

Stan is a clay guy with OK results on other surfaces. Istomin is the fast court guy with the fast court game.

Stan does lose a lot of points, but yeah, he'll probably ask for a WC into Braunschweig next week, and regain the lost points.

Istomin has a good game to expose Wawrinka's general fast court weaknesses.

At the end of the day though, if you forget about the Murray match Wawrinka's grass record is shoddy. He generally loses to the first guy with a serve he meets.

Denis is a much better player than I thought. He has really nice looking shots, powerful, flat, he hits pretty good angles, good serve, OK net ability and his movement is average but good enough for a guy whose aggressive like he is. Seems like he may be starting to break out a bit.

Stan in general is about moderate level on surfaces outside of clay. Simply takes too big of swings and doesn't move well enough. His results off clay actually have gotten worse since he made his move to the top 10 in 08. However, he has made the 4th R at Wimbledon at least twice, so he can play decently on grass.

He can produce on slower hard courts, not really the faster ones (IW and Miami last year he was excellent). As you say, all about his backswing mechanics.

Yeah, but check who he played. Vassallo/Schwank/Levine last year - Levine is competent at times, but I could beat the other two on grass :-) 2008 it was Daniel, Potro, and Zverev by retiral. His game worked against Murray because he wasn't pressured, in very heavy indoor conditions after the ventilation systems failed. He could set up and tee off big hit after big hit, while Murray couldn't do any damage at all.

Against a heavy serve and powerful groundstrokes he's toast - I saw him Nottingham one year, he was even overpowered by the mighty Seppi groundies, could barely win a point against that giant serve. Sure, Notts is a lot quicker grass, but it's the same general problems Wawrinka has on any faster court.

Yeah, I agree with your assessment. And those are some mighty kind draws he had the past 2 years at Wimbledon. He did do well in Indian Wells last year and generally does well there, but as you say, the slower the surface, the better Stan can play and execute his shots. Also, outside of his technique, the grittier, slower courts help with his heaviness and topspin, which doesn't help him nearly as much on the quick courts.

Disappointing especially considering he made the 4th round in '08 and '09.

To think there is going to be a quarter-finalist from this 1/8th. The best two players left in that section are playing each other in round 2.
